Yep! Two times stand out in my mind, in vanilla. Once wasn’t related to me, they must have been helping someone with something. The other was when I put in a ticket. I don’t remember what it was for, but I remember the GM talking to me (I was on the coast of STV) and realizing they were there but I couldn’t see them, but they were watching me. I got them to show up for a minute. It was great fun. I miss those days.
I remember when Blizzard used to talk to us. A long time ago. It’s been… 85 years…
Yeah I meant Winterspring, got confused
I “think” the quest was this one: https://classic.wowhead.com/quest=5162/wrath-of-the-blue-flight
I remember once a GM killed Asmongold for going out of bounds during the Shadowlands alpha.
No
If you have to ask then I have to think about it and my answer will be Yes because seeing a GAME MASTER in the world you’re trying to be immersed in would certainly break immersion. Especially if they appeared in any unusual fashion
It wouldn’t personally bother me though, I’d just “Hm” and go about my business.
I had a GM take over my warrior toon and play it for about 5 minutes which I thought was VERY WEIRD. Only saw that ONCE in 15 years of playing. Happened in BFA. They were trying to fix why equipment manager didn’t work to swap gear. Never fixed the problem (swapping weapons wouldn’t swap correctly).
I think they random drop mobs on people. Was ambushed by 3 deer in a BFA zone, then same thing happened later in a sl zone. Could be my imagination.
Oh God the GM island. I remember all the conspiracy videos it’d watch as a stupid a kid.
Shame blizzard fired them all
I had a GM help me in game back in BfA. I couldn’t figure out what I was missing to continue the War Campaign. He helped me figure out by taking over my character. He help me see what I was missing. I was glad I was wracking my brain and google and couldn’t find the via google or even wowhead.
They are watching us!
GMs used to enter the game world as a visible character on occasion. Back in 'nilla when I was in a guild pushing world first content, they would often observe our raid boss attempts (as an invisible observer during the actual combat, of course), but they had the ability to appear as a blue Blizzard “employee” character. We would chat with them about issues, concerns, exploits, and other related problems, the “physical” character would kinda give people a focus of sorts… like you weren’t talking to the invisible sky wizard. Rarely, they would appear in the blue guy costume in capital cities for events, get a crowd and summon raid-type bosses nearby, do their GM magic tricks, and so on.
The most obvious evidence they were invisibly interacting in-game was when someone was being a complete jackwad (this is long before the reporting/muting/etc options were introduced.) The offending character would suddenly be stunned or sleeped… whatever you want to call it with the green "Z"s rising from them, then the character would be despawned after a few minutes. Presumably, they were getting an earful in their chat and then a game timeout of some specific timeframe.
They even had their own little place called GM Island that you could stack bags full of health pots and make it to back in vanilla… waaaay off the coast. Then they put invisible monsters of instant death on the shores to keep people out. Then they made it disappear altogether.
Still a few screenshots floating around of GMs if you search “world of warcraft game master.”
It is sad that during a time when they had more players playing, they also had a lot better customer service.
I remember not being able to find the frostwolf PVP mount vendor and sending a ticket in and when I logged in the next day, the GM had moved my character to stand right in front of the vendor.
Or the time when I accidentally DE’d my weapon after the Javelin quest and the GM I talked to not only fixed the issue but gave me a companion pet.
Now I put in a ticket and I get a message to go to a site not operated by Blizzard. Sad.
A GM once logged onto my account while i was playing another character to retried items from my guild bank, he even whispered me from my own character and it had the little blue blizz logo there lol
(it was in the lead up to Cata launch, i was fishing in Silithus but my fishing bobber was often landing in Uldum water and bringing in Cata fish/motes before the expansion had officially launched. He was collecting the stacks of fish+motes)
I swam out to GM island back in vanilla
that would require them to actually play the game. everyone knows they dont anymore
ion and ghostcrawler used to be seen quite often on mal’ganis and talked alot. i spoke to them 3 times and ya visible just about random stuff how i liked the game just random stuff. think they felt sorry for us alliance there lol
I guess it kind of shows that the game doesn’t feel… like a family anymore? As in the devs were having fun and stuff. Now it just feels more like, well, a game made mostly for money. (Which all games are made for money, but it feels more so now.)
I am actually very glad they don’t bother me anymore with their stupid purple popup windows and their fake role playing banter. Like, 3 paragraphs of “THE MIGHTY MAGIC MASTER DESCENDS UPON YOU and how may I help you?”
I saw one in Legion. I was having account issues and got a whisper asking if I could log out so they could fix it. I asked for a bit of time for our last attempt at H Xavius.
They popped in and chilled at the edge of the room while we killed it.
Maybe they helped, maybe they didn’t.
My first whisper from a GM 10/10 gave me the impression I was chatting with someone who was high. I almost didn’t respond because I didn’t know about roleplaying.
