If you have to go to alternate sources to understand the lore, then the game is not doing a great job at explaining it.

I stopped following lore after wrath. Anything after wrath is fan fiction to me

You tube video makers only tell you what they want to and what they find important. They might willingly leave out details in the book that contradict the narrative they want to make.

Also, there are details that you might enjoy, and others never mention.

But most importantly, reading a video game based novel should be something you do as enjoyment.

I don’t think watching you tube videos will give you the breadth and depth and details, like reading it for yourself. But you can get an understanding of the major plot points.

I thought Shadows Rising was awesome. Sira Moonwarden is my WoW spirit animal. Sira gets a lot of hate, and I think reading the book myself made me enjoy Sira much more than if I just watched some biased YouTube video.

Everything should be told within game.

Knowing what the alternative is for a complex lore narrative (FF14), I much prefer the WoW model.

A story, on rails, with literal hours of cut scenes is not for me.

And all of the past complaining did get Blizz to try it in SLs
and we can see that it was not very popular with the WoW player base in general

I feel some of the books contradict the events that happened in game or get glossed over. So it’s a toss if the book will match up to the game or not.

Reading quests isnt going to get me vaults for a quickly approaching tuesday!

I imagine FF14 is like the Maw intro, on steroids.

I think that alternative sources to expand on lore is fine, but if they are introducing anything major, it should be in the game.

The WoW lore experience for a new player.

Cool I’m a Deathknight! Ok
now people are throwing fruit at me and screaming “get a rope”
 now their calling me champion
What did I do to earn this? Now Me and Jaina are in a Jailcell together
Who the hell is Jaina? Do they not know I’m the champion?

Troll thread defending WoW storytelling LMAO.

Ok my favorite, since I didn’t play the end of legion or beginning of BFA.
“The burning of Teldra-what-now? Oh, I can’t ever do that content.”

Yes, but there is also an element of: Imagine if you were reading a really good book (well, at least a decent book) and every 3 minutes I walked up and slapped it out of your hands.

wtf
you pick it up and start reading again. Another 3 minutes go by and I slap the book to the floor again. This continues, until you’re done with the book.

Enjoyable??

This is what it’s like trying to read/understand the lore WHILE things are going on in WoW.

Best example of just how stupid this is: in Scarlet Monastery, a zone SMOTHERED with lore and just cool stuff in general. There are at least 4 books of lore so important to the story, there are Achievements for reading them! BUT YOU CAN’T TAKE THE BOOKS WITH YOU
you can only read them INSIDE the instance.

So you either are supposed to read these books while the fights are going on (wtf???), or totally clear the dungeon, then GO BACK and read these important books. But remember-- you can’t take them out and read them when it might be more convenient, or reference them later. You can only read them RIGHT THERE. If you want to read them again, you gotta clear the dungeon AGAIN.

What flipping moron thought that was a good idea for an RPG??? Back when WoW still had at least one foot in the RPG game.

The should put WoW lore clues in Cracker Jack boxes.

I can’t say exaclty how much of the player base shares my opinion

But I don’t care about lore.

Since they have a diverse player base, that sounds like a pretty good middle ground solution to me.

How do you figure that’s “a good middle ground”??

The only REAL solution would be to let players TAKE the books as lootable items. To read WHENEVER THEY WANT.

THAT is the good “middle ground” because if you’re not interested in the lore, you don’t have to take the books. lol

Those that are interested now have a way to 1> not slow their group down, 2> not waste time backtracking, 3> don’t have to go to an outside source, 4> have it available to read when they want, 5> more I could think of

I remember when I was leveling my first character and loving the “less is more” storytelling in Stonetalon Mountains. But as I leveled and went to more zones, the lore got worse and worse, and by the time I hit WOD I was constantly saying “wth happened?!” Then I got to legion and it’s interstellar mambo jumbo, and the sorry excuse of a lore felt more like an infomercial with “BUT WAIT! THERE IS MORE!” bs. I already tapped out by then so BFA and shadowlands had no affects on me because I was already completely disenchanted with wow lore.

You must spend more money to understand duh
