Just look at the customizations we’re getting from day 1, AND map size/graphic etc. I worry about the relevancy of this already seasonal game if I imagine what the queue and retention rate for such content would be, adjacent to a flop expansion
P.S ignore the hairy brunette guy, its the content that’s more daunting.
I’m not sure MMOs as a genre are really that relevant anymore.
I think there’s a lot of sunk cost fallacy with legacy players in their respective games and younger / newer players aren’t as into the neckbearding grind.
If any MMO will surprise to the upside, it will be Riot’s.
I think it is a bad idea to only focus on younger people in making games. Plenty of older people, who now have lots of money, still enjoy gaming. If every company just makes games focused on younger people, there is a completely neglected part of the market where billions of dollars are just sitting there waiting for a decent product to be made.
They are relevant. Companies wouldn’t be trying to take market share if they weren’t. They are very capital intense to create. I do not think Riot would be dooking money out on a lost cause. Lost Ark is basically an isometric MMO and it’s doing fine. Granted better in the east than west but still doing well.
You just need to compare it to itself and not other genres. MMO games will never compete with mobile games in volume, nor with FPS games like call of duty or fortnite.
POE is tiny game, 150k players or something in its best season. Still going strong 10 years later. Not an MMO, but proof you can make a game for a small niche audience.
