I think a 5-star run unlocks a bonus Adamant Floor (not sure the name)? If you don’t care about that, and you have a 4-star on any toon, then all your toons can go up to the next layer (when it becomes available). I checked my alts and they haven’t done any runs yet they can all access Layer10 next week when it opens since my pally got a 4-star.
Once the layers’s unlocked, I couldn’t care about the stars/score… I want to take the epic powers and double/triple stack things to be over-powered and have fun with it. I will after this layer-unlock chore is done on at least 1 toon for the next 3 weeks. Not sure I will bother with Adamant floor bonus if you need a 5-star every time you want to access it (maybe once just to see).

I’m one of those sick people that really liked Torghast, absurd builds and the power trip of a playground that didn’t really matter. I loved TC too. But the new Torghast literally punishes you in bonuses for taking epic powers or stacking fun powers (duplicates). No more stacking convoke, stacking Felguard damage, stacking blink CD reduction, getting high immunity uptime on my rogue, unless I’m willing to pay for it in points I’ll have to make up elsewhere. I do agree with this sentiment. I had some criticisms about pre-9.1 Torghast, but they mostly were just complaints about how it needed crap tons of cosmetic rewards added to it, more and different anima powers, etc. I don’t dislike the bonus objectives as a concept, but I really don’t think they should be discouraging part of what made Torghast so fun for a lot of us.
I’m in the same boat. I did the new layer on a 216 hunter and then on a 198 hunter and the 198 got the higher score with no obvious difference between them. I have 95%+ completion, usually 100 or 99, I do the quest, all the chests/levers, dont get hit by traps, no deaths, kill the end boss, can do the no duplicates and no epics (but don’t like these two and they should not exist), and… 3 stars. It’s just too disheartening and I used to really quite like torghast.
The problem is that you can complete everything in torghast and still fail it. Yes, if you do the blizzard dance required by the new scoring system, you can beat it, but if you just kill everything and complete every normal objective, you will loose. It’s a terrible system.
What I’d suggest for you is examine how you’re using the Empowered buff. I’ve found you get more Empowered bang for our buck if you activate it in a room full of pots/souls, or right before a LOT of non-elite adds die. Just remember you don’t get any points for Empowered if you don’t kill things before the timer runs out (or if you don’t destroy pots/free souls/etc). Also, try killing 2 elites within 10 seconds of each other if you can manage that safely. If that’s not possible, some easy side objectives are things like ending the run with 500 phantasma on you (needs to be 500 per person if you’re in a group) and using a ravenous anima cell on one of the brokers. If you do all that you’ve said you’ve done and then adjust your use of Empowered, you should be able to get 4 stars fairly easily.
