Yeah, this definitely feels like "retail 1.0"... how are there people still claiming it's Classic?

Classic is whatever Microsoft wants it to be.

Yes, cataclysm was the turning point for wow. This was the first expansion to both update the old world and then design the story content around it. Every change they implemented had the side effect of devaluing whatever work they did before.

If there was a zone, quest, or dungeon altered by the addition of cataclysm, Blizzard didnt do anything meaningful to preserve those aspects of the game for those who enjoyed them.

This behavior has continued since cata, resulting in largely disposable content being temporary valued so long as it gave them a reason to self flagellate their own development release.

Afterward, its always 'we have another new thing coming soon to displace/devalue what you’re doing now, be sure to sub and buy the box when it drops.

Honestly, blizzard is incapable of recognizing when something adds a meaningful experience to wow. Also incapable of preserving it.

wrath was not any better

no its not, and no it wasnt.
you and other forums decided that on your own. It’s not up to you what classic is, its up to blizzard. theyre the ones who named it.

Going to play the hell out of cata and mop personally

No. I was just replying to him saying “many say it’s the best mmo”

No one should be playing anything unless they enjoy it regardless of what they are told to play.

Era was cata waiting room for people caught up in wrath for some even. Use that $15 sub kind of thing lol.

My cata time shot up. I have 4k honor to farm on the army lol.

I still have the leveling era Paladin. It’s there since I did like the old ways. Game moved on from that. Era is there for the hours I go let’s seal swap. But…cata pre patch gets lions share of time.

Lions share when it’s not fallout nv or fo4. That show spurred a revisit there too.

The only thing “retail” about Cata Classic is that upon login , SW and Org are instantly recognizable from the retail versions.

Everything else is pretty close to Wrath Classic.

Man. In my op. They need to just keep legacy servers of each expansion. That would solve all the problems. And no one would be arguing at this point if they just did that.

Not really. I mean, when you can’t use fire or frost spells anymore on a frost mage, and you can’t have any runes other than frost runes for frost dks. Wrath allowed 2 of each rune on a dk, regardless of spec chosen. As well as no classes really relying on mana anymore. It all feels so close to retail to me.

There are certainly some changes.

DKs in particular got a huge overhaul from Wrath.

But the game as it stands hasn’t really changed much outside of classic leveling zones. And I guess that just depends on how much you value leveling.

Endgame is roughly the same as classic Wrath. Especially compared to retail which is dominated by Mythic plus.

EDIT: My point is that it still feels very different from retail.

I’ve played every Retail expansion. Retail started in Cata and is still going in DF. When we say Retail it’s not just the current expansion it’s MoP, Legion, WoD, etc…

As explained the systems that were introduced in Cata are still in Retail today and Cata was the foundation that is Retail. In MoP they expanded on more Retail design and then each expansion afterward.

Saying Cata is Retail 1.0 is very accurate. They changed design philosophy, class homogenization, Mastery system and the extreme power creep.

In Wrath players had 30k HP and in Cata it went too 200k+ The game changed forever in Cata. The world, the design and progression. Retail started in Cata and this is when most Retail players were born aka Cata babies.

If you are a Retail player and want to see where Retail started then Cata is for you.

Except it has. There were massive changes and new systems and stats introduced (the foundation of Retail) while removing all the old ones. Cata was the start of a totally different game, designed for a totally different player.

Ngl…. I look forward to versatility not resilience. Vers has pve uses.

Hell it even allows Brian’s image to be true. Remember, a fateful day in wc and he asked an offspec plate user to tank it.

I once had a sl dungeon tank bailed. Full verse pvp gear frost dk tank time lol.

Versatility was the worst stat EVER added to the game. It was a massive mistake and should of been removed with multistrike. It has caused nothing but problems and completely mucked up design. I can’t say enough bad things about Versa and wish it wasn’t on PvP gear in DF and they just remove it from the game.

I really hope Retail add back a PvP stat and Versa is removed. I might play Retail again.

They feel the same as classic.

I feel like If I can’t have ammo, and a quiver, and aspect of the viper or volley on a hunter using focus. It’s very different than playing a hunter in wrath.

Same with frost mages. Frost mages can use frost spells. In wrath, my frost mage could pretty much use any kind of spell. And any class that uses mana. Well, mana might as well not exist, because you never need to use mana on any mana class.

Hardly.

Mastery is about it. Is that what this is all about?

Cata endgame consists of Raid logging, Heroic dungeons, and Arena for PvP. Professions are unchanged.

Retail is Mythic+, new professions, Mythic Raiding (not a thing in Cata), and Rated PvP through multiple sources.

The shift to modern retail was not Cata. Cata is just carrying over systems from Wrath with a little streamlining.

The expac that ushered in retail was WoD and Legion. Stat squishes, new game modes, new models and animations. Ability pruning and world quests.

We just aren’t there yet dude.

Versatility is one way they had pve gear not own in pvp.

Wrath and Sooners pve gear burned through it.

And cata preparch is showing its touchy as hell. It’s getting fixed at 85, maybe. For now…we all twink even if on accident lol.

I don’t rant on my 2 shot deaths. Elune knows I drop my fair share of targets. I don’t die alone lol.

As resilience just says dude…I give up. 85 comes soon enough to fix that. Hopefully.

Omg. I don’t play retail, quit in original MoP, but when DF came out i watched some streamers leveling and I thought "is it just me or does every ability and spell just make a generic “woosh” noise. And they do, on every class. No more sword hitting metal sounds, no more distinct healer sound effects that differentiate between a holy and a nature heal…its just all so, generic. Not to mention that all the animations look stupid, and theres popups everywhere…its just SO bad compared to Classic. As long as this ‘classic’ version of the game we’re getting doesn’t have any of the above in it, i’ll consider it classic still.

Yeah but those are just class mechanics.

Retail feels like a completely different game made by different developers.
