WrA used to have an RP-PvP scene, but it faded around…Pandaria, maybe? Most of the server PvPers knew each other from WG or events, and some people perma-flagged. They also had respectful fights and duels back in the day where if a couple people squared off, the rest of us backed up and let them fight without diving in to gank. It was saluting, not /spit at the other person, and people on both factions would trade tips and chat.
We also used to hold RP-PvP events, coordinated so that people could muster, ICly chat or give orders, attack, clear the field, and fight the next round after gaining or losing ground.
All of that stopped when we lost a lot of PvPers.
To be honest, I’d recommend perma-flagging again over using warmode, but it’d have to include the sooner removal of sharding, which IMO should only last for the first month of a new content drop.
I have never been a huge PVPer but I love RP-PVP so much.
I miss the days of World Defense popping off in Brill or Crossroads and all the appropriately themed RP guilds flying in to defend their lands.
One of my favourite was hanging out by the Zep towers in Tirisfal and seeing an Alliance raid show up with familiar Alliance RP guild names. All of them emoting and this and that, it was like, oh snaps something is about to go down! Then calling in the other guilds in the global RP chat and now we have Shadows of Lordaeron, Northeastern Coalition and others all showing up to defend their city.
Then defending the courtyard as they stormed the gates and screaming RP emotes at each other. So much fun!
We just don’t have that anymore
I absolutely hate sharding and crz so much. I have the unpopular opinion that large servers like Tich and Illidan should not be able to shard into smaller realms. I also have the unpopular opinion that only RP realms should be able to shard/crz with each other. I know not everyone from nonRP realms are trolls but Alliance would suffer a lot in BfA with trash streamers sharding into WRA Alliance to camp and grief Stormwind roleplayers.
WPvP just isn’t what it used to be. I used to practically beg people to join me in WPvP silliness, and I organized a few big battles back in the day for WrA. Now I just can’t find a reason to really do it. Everyone is a stranger from another server and there’s no way to really RPPvP anymore. Phasing messes everything up and most people just play the game for the reward loop these days.
Yup, there was that and the numerous times killing and pulling guards in the Mage Quarter and spamming toys and graphic intense spells to lag people out or crash the server.
WPVP and defending/attacking cities were pretty much the most pointless part of the game but it was also the most fun. I don’t really bother with Warmode anymore because why go through the trouble of playing against people you will probably never see again? I miss having healthy rivalries. As toxic as wotlk Wintergrasp on this server was it was still some of the most fun times I had on the server. I used to HATE horde on this server but I ended up switching to horde because I befriended people that seriously pissed me off in Wintergrasp and TB like Prier, Dawnblood, Slithals, Kirsy, Cole, Borgg, and the darling Ephie with her Stormwind shenanigans. I never really did arenas or any sort of rated PVP enough but WPVP and even its drama and silliness were loads of fun.
The sad truth though is I doubt anything can be done to bring fun like that back to the game even if the powers that be were remotely interested.
A lot of people that still post here a lot are people I used to see in WG/TB all the time
a sleeper that I don’t see enough people talking about is a guy called Datan. Human warrior that used to just stalk the roads of TB like Anton Cigurh. Terrifying to get charged by him, and that’s when arms warriors were not very good
I stopped WPVP when the armistice was signed. Throughout me playing WoW I WPVP’ed as my characters would following the story from Wrath to BfA with a small break in WoD. My characters have achieved victory in the story’s outcome so what more reason do I have to fight the Horde?
WPvP from an Alliance perspective is extremely easy to justify. The Horde, in full force with representation from each of its races, committed a Warhammer 40k tier genocidal atrocity like… 3 or 4 years ago. They’ve probably got a higher civilian death toll than most of the actual antagonists in the setting and by all standards they should have been dismantled. Screw a treaty - most Alliance members should rightfully never forgive the Horde or its sycophants.
And from the Horde it’s even easier to justify - being an unrepentant evil jerk is fun & cool. Simple as. But if you are a Horde player and fancy your character as a halfway decent person, you are definitely not ICly going around giving wtomic wedgies to Alliance dorks, because they haven’t really done anything to deserve it. Fortunately, I don’t fancy my character as a halfway decent person.
Who said Lahil forgave them?
Lahil believes the Horde as a whole should have been disbanded but he also understands it’s not even the same Horde anymore. As for the genocide part, how could one possibly tell which member was responsible for what? Outside of Orcs and Forsaken, most races were just dragged along by insert ex-former insane warchief here.
Kind of hard to blame some random Vulpera for Brennadam when they probably don’t even know what that is. Also whats killing random members even going to do? At the end of the day if nothing else, Lahil understands war probably better than any character in this story in that he realizes fighting now will cause more deaths on both sides.
With that knowledge as well as knowing the Horde will never truly be gone, so long as they don’t attack he wont.
Well I mean, I was asked a question so I answered…If I could ask, what reason would the race you are playing on have?
But if you are talking about OOC reasons, I have even more. Anyone here can inspect my honor level and kill count to know I have a pretty decent history of PVP. That being said from rage whispers to-…Well, actually that’s just it, a lot of rage whispers. Got kind of tired of people telling me I am bad after fair 1v1’s of me smoking them.
I still to this day will get someone alt hoping to tell me how much I suck because I would not let them gank lowbies in Stormwind. My favorite is when I am told I only rolled a Monk because they are good right now, despite maining it since MoP. Or that Monk is just a hard counter to the class they are playing. I have literally been told to switch to another class before so they can “win”…
You can’t I suppose, but you can tell who’s proudly wearing their flag and emblem, which is at least partially an endorsement of what occurred. I get your point, but you also can’t say an Alliance player, particularly a Night Elf, is acting unreasonable if they go around slapping anyone proudly wearing the colors that torched their homeland and burned their families alive just years ago.
From how you describe your character, that’s the rational and sensible way to process things, but other characters might be justifiably less rational in their judgments of Horde members. You mentioned Vulpera which is itself a tricky topic considering how insanely nonsensical their joining the Horde already is
Which is why I didn’t, other people can do as they please. One of the biggest reasons I don’t have Lahil seeking revenge for his own town burning (A lot of people don’t know about Brennadam) is because:
1- Its forced game mechanics that hardly made sense to begin with. I honestly think Horde would have 100% turned on Sylvanas MUCH sooner in BfA, if not Legion. “Our new leader was responsible for blighting an entire city? What could go wrong?”. The Horde was already uneasy with Sylvanas for MANY good reasons.
2- It’s just misery RP…
Take the Night Elves for example, in order to follow the narrative to the letter you HAVE to RP a depressed/angry character now, no exception. It’s just not fun, having to always hate a group of people I feel limits character development.
3- As I mentioned with the Vulpera you also got Pandaren, High mountain Tauren, Nightborn and now Dracthyr who let’s face it, are most of them REALLY going to have a steak in a massive faction conflict?
If people wish to follow this narrative then more power to them, but I am going to need some better writing personally to get that same feeling I had going after Undead players in Cata.
It does kind of strike at the heart of the matter since WRA is a roleplay server and a lot of people won’t or don’t have IC justifications for picking fights outside of “I woke up and craved violence.” I certainly didn’t give any thought of why my little vulpera is running around slaughtering alliance (and sometimes horde in FFA zones) until this morning when I read this thread! But my vulpera is absolutely the sort who wakes up every morning and chooses violence so–
I’ve run into your guild pretty often in wpvp and yeah, you guys give us a real run for the money compared to most other guilds. It’s fun!
I remember when War Mode first came out, some folks were very obsessively protective of it, saying it was going to fix the lack of WPvP stuff. I made a sarcastic generalization, “World PvP is dumb” and got a 5 paragraph lecture from someone in a mythic+ group back in BfA. Became that person’s number one enemy when I told them to chill, didn’t really last in that guild for long.
But in reality, what I meant was Wpvp in War Mode was dumb, cuz I was already seeing all these flaws at the time. I was originally from Twisting Nether server on my tauren warrior. I -LIVED- for World PvP. I loved it so much. War Mode was something I was excited for, but the way it panned out, Wpvp is just a memory.
And something I revisit on classic with some of my old guild mates from back in the day.
