I really, really want to be excited, but the specter of “The Light is evil now” haunts me at every turn.
I don’t think there’s any single plotline that would get me to quit the game faster.

I’m a big fan of “Light isn’t necessarily good, Void isn’t necessarily bad, but they need to be held in balance & anything to excess will cause problems” plots but that is definitely 7 year old me getting obsessed with Star Wars talking and that tiny gremlin brat isn’t to be trusted.
throw. wide. the gates.
There really is a certain long-form sense of humor to the idea that the Lich King will probably be more of an ally this expansion than the Light.
shades of gray for babies
“Pure evil and pure good are boring and tired,” someone will say as they advocate for the same muddy, toothless ~shades of grey~ storytelling we’ve had to endure for the last 20 or so years.
“That’s why we instead changed it to ‘pure good and pure evil, but with opposite color schemes.’ We’re so subversive. Please stop bullying us on Twitter.”
This line of thinking from writers really drives me nuts. Because yeah, they really can be. But it’s like the laziest possible solution to just make pure good and evil yet again, only now they’re both dumb and convoluted enough that you can’t tell what the difference actually is.
Instead of, say, actually writing complex moral motivations that don’t map clearly onto that spectrum to begin with.
Yeah the shades of grey that we get seems to be “Evil, but they think they are good and just but there is no real justification for why they believe it. They just do.” The person could even be short-sighted or wrong. Sylvanas is a perfect example of this now. She wants to end life and hope because? Apparently it’s what she believes is better for unknown reasons. A nihilistic character could be fine but if it’s just “I want everyone to die and hope to be lost. Life sucks. Death is awesome.” then it’s ineffective and reads like an im14andthisisdeep post.
The quote raid “finale” cinematic has been datamined but I don’t know what other evidence is out there to make a call.
Plus it wouldn’t be the first and likely won’t be the last time Blizzard pushes the game regardless of directly contradicting evidence.
This bothers me the most about how asinine the entire sylvanas situation is. In the best (or worst) case scenario where she’s just doing what she allegedly believes is necessary to defeat a greater evil or something… No? We’ve killed so many gods and demi gods and aberrations of the cosmic variety. We don’t need Sylvanas’ b.s. to accomplish whatever the expansion goal becomes.
Blizzard’s just pushing that because it’s what they want. Or maybe they assume it’ll sell better, I couldn’t begin to guess.
I think the writers mean to give us a story of some payoff that Sylvanas expects if she sends enough souls to death. I don’t think she believes it’s better for anyone but herself.
So long as Bolvar doesn’t get 7D chess’d by Sylvanas or smacked with a villain bat.
Bolvar/LK is an interesting entity in the world of Azeroth. Jailer of the Damned? Come on, it’s just cool! I worry Blizzard may mangle this plot horribly and toss all the cool elements of the lore to the wayside… Just let Bolvar smash Sylvanas’ head in the second she tries to do a scheme, come on, blizz!
It would be great if Blizz would remember the big dang hero that Bolvar was back in the day. But tbh I don’t think we have the same writing team as we did back then, so they won’t have the same nostalgia for characters and probably won’t care what they do to him to further the plot. If that’s true, Bolvar will probably either take out Sylvanas and die in the attempt (if we’re lucky) or go on to become the next big bad in about 3 more expacs (if we aren’t).
And then Taelia will put on the Lich King helmet so we can do it all over again in 6-7 expacs. Or maybe Calia will. Or the two of them will fight. I don’t know - I have no faith in the story at this point.
Not gunna lie, that Lich King art looks saf.
I’d love a new xpac devoted to DKs and Undead/Shadowlands.
…sylvanas cuts a deal with bolvar to clear out the shadowlands in exchange for freeing him with her last valkyrs.
Bolvar yells “shadowlands are freeee!”
Yeah they can’t really feasibly write Sylvanas out of this outside of something retroactive. There is zero way “I want to kill hope” is a good motivation for anyone to be like “Yeah okay that inspires me to kill the big bad. Thanks for destroying my hope Sylvanas.” so even the idea she is doing it so we can defeat a greater evil seems silly. Her being anything less than out for herself and someone like Nathanos(provisionally) would be really weird to have play out.
It would be pretty fitting if she ended up getting more than she bargained for and ending up in Hell and begging the player to help her. But she has burned all her bridges, even among the Forsaken, her people, her sisters, and probably Nathanos at that point. Her end is the same torment she sent thousands to have. And there will be no saving her because nobody would want to save her even if they have the capacity. I do love Just Deserts type endings to villains.
I’m calling it right now…
We’re eventually going to get a rehash of WoD that is going back in time to a EK where the Black Dragonflight took over the human kingdoms.
It will also be Blizzard’s first Rehash that is better than the original.
You’re optimistic.
I like being optimistic over pessimistic. Especially when it isn’t that difficult to achieve.
Legion was better than BC, many people would suggest. I’d love to stay far away from another WoD, but another WotLK, or at least an expansion with WotLK themes, is one I have very high hopes for.
