Wrath of the Bolvar discussion

Hello Relentless Optimism, it’s me your pal, Relentless Cynicism. Though today only to say that; if we get an expac that delivers on anything it sells it’ll probably be due to their weird On / Off cycling of quality and resource distribution. Frankly speaking, I don’t think any individual rehash or theme would stand on it’s own. Blizzard has to actually put the effort in (and probably will / is if we’ve identified a trend.)

Good lord we’re polar opposites.

I am Horde, you are Alliance.

My face is visible, yours is hidden.

I’m undead, skinny to the point of being emaciated, and you’re a Pandaren, quite the opposite!

I have finally found my nemesis. :open_mouth:

It will become the greatest rivalry since the Steelers and the Ravens.

Welp. N’y’alotha can join Nazjatar and Argus in the wasted potential expansions graveyard. I love the Scourge and all, but this is just… unexpected.

I mean, sure, we’ve had all these leaks about it, and there’s been plenty of discussion about the Shadowlands. But what do we have in game? A single questline with Vol’jin and Sylvanas’ vague, convoluted plot to kill the world because reasons.

This isn’t the makings of a good expansion story. We need to know what the stakes are at walking into the expansion. Look at Wrath of the Lich King, we saw the Lich King and his army of the undead. They were going to throw the world into an undead apocalypse. That is a pretty clear threat we needed to deal with, and it was present throughout the entire expansion.

Look at BfA, where we’re told the world is dying but then hop over to play pirate on two random islands and the only evidence of this “high stake” is some gold pools on these islands. We didn’t know who the final villain was and we were left in the dark so much that no one could get involved.

I’m terrified we’re literally heading for a direct sequel to BfA, which is NOT what I want. Sylvanas’ whole death arc has been one of my least favorite arcs in the game’s history. If I have to play through an expansion that is basically the WHOLE arc but as an expansion…

I don’t think I will.

Hey who has a timestamp to one of those early q/a’s where we all knew it was full of it but Ion said (glib or otherwise) “BfA is not an old god expansion”. Or, “there are no old gods in BfA”, or whatever.

Yeah N’y’alotha, Nazjatar, and Argus could have been 6 years worth of story right there. Easily. More if you had a couple build up expansions for the first two. Legion could have been a great lead up to Argus. Though I’d have kept Kil’Jaeden around till Argus.

If true (and I agree with you, that’s my supposition, as well), I don’t see how you would do it without being hugely insulting to both factions by neglecting the Alliance and babying the Horde.

To the Alliance, it’s a “now don’t you feel silly for thinking that genocide was a big deal, you dumb idiots.” To the Horde, it’s a “don’t you worry, you precious widdle babies, see? Sylvanas was the good guy the whole time and Saurfang’s realizations were meaningless! Genocide is good, actually!”

Stepping around the weight of genocide as a term, it would feel like basically a cementing of the status quo in a time where the game ill needs that.

i said this in one of my discords but I’ve always been a long time Horde player. So way back in the day when I first did the Wrathgate event and watched the cinematic I had no idea who Bolvar was. My reaction was like, why is Al from Tool Time in WoW? So now I can never unsee Bolvar as anything but that.

Calling it now though: Necromancer will be new class!

Features:

-New Necromancer class! The shadowy Necromancer arrives to aid heroes with a variety of damage-over-time curses, summoned unholy minions and powerful dark energy bolts.

Class changes:

-Warlock specializations have been changed from Affliction, Demonology and Destruction to Home Improvement, Tasteful Floral Arrangements and Baking.

I’d go a mail-wearing spellcaster class, personally. One that deals primarily with summoning pets, perhaps not unlike beast mastery hunter, but with a more spellcasting focused vibe. A tank spec could involve creating and controlling abominations/undead monstrosities. It doesn’t need to be warlock v2

Don’t forget the removal of Unholy as a DK spec (presumably to make way for class skins or whatever)

I agree with the sentiment but like…

gestures awkwardly at Unholy and Demonology and Blood and Affliction and Demon Hunters

There just isn’t much space to fit a traditional necromancer into WoW’s class design space.

Not to say that I think we couldn’t get them or anything. Just commenting on the current design, and the trend in design before.

I was just making a joke that Warlock abilities tend to get sacrificed for other classes.

So is the planet still dying or what?

Did we ever wrap that up or did we just forget about the whole giant demon god stabbing the planet with a giant sword thing?

I like the idea of class skins but dislike that I play a warrior and thus am not on particularly fertile ground for cool new takes on my abilities

I disagree on that count honestly. I think Demon Hunters and warlocks, for instance, feel very different to play. Death Knight is a very melee class. A necromancer would be more of a ranged one, and could successfully have a different feel, imo.

Anyway it doesn’t much matter because I’m happy with my hunter and death knight, but I do like to speculate :stuck_out_tongue:

Aren’t we all dying, when you think about it?

Draenor is free.

Now.

Believe me, there’s room for innovation, but there’s a reason Demo lost Metamorphesis. It’s known.

Blizzard “could” make a bunch of similar yet differentiated enough to feel different specs.

But they’ve done a garbage job getting there thus far.

The biggest sin of BfA is that there’s no point where Magni turns to stare directly into the camera and screams "Draenor Azeroth is free alive! "

On the bright side, we do at least have Wrathion’s journal where he says that he will return to aid us when the true Battle for Azeroth begins
