Considering they use a lot of the same assets (or at least they did when they were originally being developed side by side) I’m holding out hopes that we’re getting a massive world overhaul in 9.0, spearheaded by what they’re doing with Reforged.

I’m not sure how many polygons my current GPU can handle without starting to melt but this difference makes me a touch nervous.

You are comparing a model from 2004 that has yet to be updated in WoW to a model in 2019. Of course the one in 2019 is going to look better, even if it is for an RTS.
Blizzard have slowly been updating older models. For example, Quillboars, Hyenas, ect all got model updates in BFA. BFA didn’t feature Gnolls though so they didn’t get an update.

It’s not really a matter of one artist vs another but how many “polygons” they’re allocated.
WoW’s been improving for sure but it’s still building off the vanilla in the end. They don’t have the same freedom when it comes to how intense they make their models as compared to WC3.
I’m comparing WoW’s best Gnoll model to WC3.
But fair enough. Let’s make a fairer comparison.
BfA Quillboar to WC3 Gnoll:
The Gnoll is still miles away.
And this is an RTS! The characters are supposed to be tiny. They could get away with inferior character models compared to BfA and still make WC3 Reforged look better than BfA.

It might be because this is still an RTS where units are just one individual rather than one unit being made up of a dozen or so individuals.
Reforged will still have nowhere near the amount of units characters on screen at one time like other RTS games these days.They don’t have to skimp on detail since they don’t need to have so much happening at once.
There are probably many more reasons for that.
Reforged can probably handle Normal Maps. WoW simply can’t.
WoW tries to be usable in low end computers. Maybe Reforged doesn’t.
Etc.
I’m not saying the artists from Reforged are more skilled than the ones from WoW.
But they definitely know the Warcraft Style. They’ve made an authentic Warcraft visual experience.
And Blizzard is always saying they can’t just hire a bunch of people because it would mess with the Warcraft Style.
So I think if these very skilled Reforged Artists went to WoW once Reforge is over, it would be good for WoW.
Of course, we should keep the very talented team of current artists we have at present as well.
After all, the best part of BfA is the art!
(And maybe if we had two teams of artists we could have Tier Sets back lol)

issue is that wow’s engine is outdated…even for the company. Overwatch is on their company’s very own special engine, and those graphics are amazing.
That’s why i was telling people one of my biggest wishes for wow’s future is bringing the game to a new engine…don’t even care if it delays an expansion. 2004 graphics in 2019-2020 is just not good lol
