So I’ve been playing FF14 because I’ve been listening and hearing a lot of pretty good reviews for it lately.
The things I like about FF14 is the graphics, the character customization, and the story mode. However, I hate its controls, I absolutely hate its control system. I also cannot stand that all races look like Humans with minor, very minor differences, it seems cheap, lazy and unoriginal.
I cannot really say much about the end game because I haven’t progressed that much into it but what I can say is that as a long time player of WOW it doesn’t draw me away from WOW because its missing a lot of things that I like about WOW in my opinion so I am not sure what the hype is all about as of lately for FF14.
My 2 Cents.
Anyways, anyone else feel this way? What is your take on both?
I’ve played it back with the reboot with Realm Reborn and I have tried multiple times to try to come back and I just can’t do it. A lot of people say the story is good but honestly, it’s a snooze fest with the constant fetch quest with little to no action for combat that is already slow-paced as it is. The other thing that irked me about the game was the old english dialogue, I heard the later expansions have had this dialogue removed from it’s new stories but as a returning player, you’re forced through old content to get to current and that’s discouraging. Where in WoW now, you can choose which expansion to level or dungeon spam to end-game level. Not forced to follow the story and get straight to the action.
As much as I love being able to play all classes on 1 character, it also rips away identity from certain classes, say you pick one race that makes a dragoon look awesome but you look silly as a white mage.
I don’t mind the graphics too much but I realized I also prefer more of a cartoony take because it displays more of an art style than a technical one. FF has been trying to up it’s game on making things look too polished for 3D and it’s beginning to look like any other generic AAA title that has no life in it.
Its controls are exactly the same as WoW’s. WASD movement (rebindable) + hotbar (/w keybinds) for abilities.
If you are talking about combat mechanics, ya, WoW is better - e.g. CC is practically nonexistent in FFXIV; but I feel Blizzard is actively trying nerf it to FFXIV’s level.
Personally I don’t mind. Majority of players avoid the non-human races anyway - BE and Human are probably the most played races in WoW.
I also like that none of the FFXIV races have an in-lore stereotype attached to them. You can freely choose a race based on looks and not feel it’s a bad fit for you based on your personality.
That’s fine. You don’t have to like something just because many others like it. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. At least you gave it a fair shake and played as far as you could.
As bad as wow is, in this expansion I really can’t get behind ff14 either.
It’s story, and the story inside of mmo really doesn’t appeal to me.
It’s more instanced based than wow. The zones are more vacant than even gw2 zones, since there’s no reason or real incentive to do the content in them.
The 2.5 gcd might feel okay to some players in pve, but not to me and not to a lot of others either. Most of these “complex” weaving rotations are veil to relatively inefficient players. This is even more true in pvp where no job needs to use more than 6 abilities, either for a go or really any situation that arises. I really don’t like wow’s current gcd either. Mists & prior was the sweet spot.
And quite possibly the biggest. Despite how I don’t like this seasons pvp with wow, hands down ff14 pvp total package is dog . I know the game isn’t really meant to support it but still. Not only is pvp complete junk in ff14, but almost hardly anyone does it. Casually playing, you’re going to run into the same people all of the time. The pool of players is ridiculously low, even among rival wings. It’s a symptom of a greater problem that pvp isn’t fun/engaging and that the majority only do it for the cosmetic rewards. Once they’ve achieved what they want, you’re not going to see them again.
Apart from the weebiness, I can overlook that if I’m having a genuinely good time. I can’t say I had an awful time playing the game but it was pretty easy to distinguish that it wasn’t for me after investing a good chunk of time at the kind of end game that I like to engage with. Reflecting on it as a whole, I was never left with even the slightest sense of wonder & community engagement that eq/vanilla wow/and even ffxi hit me with.
Which control style do you dislike for FFXIV? They’re completely customizable so you could try a console controller if you don’t favor the keyboard. I’ve a lot of friends who actually prefer and do better with the controller setup for FFXIV over the keyboard/mouse.
Edit: Personally I don’t have a preference for either, I’m used to both since I play FFXIV on my PS5 as well as PC.
I tried it for a whole week, and it didn’t stick for me. The graphics are ugly even on the highest settings, the controls are awkward, and I just can’t get used to the some of the races in the game, specially the cat people.
I guess I’m not a big fan of MMO’s, just warcraft in particular. I’d love to like FF and know what i feels to be catered to for once in my life, but it’s just not the game for me.
I’m a mouse and Keyboard player. I just didn’t like the controls and the feel of it. To me it wasn’t the same as much as I tried to customize them to how I play on WOW.
Its hard to explain I guess.
I played that game from the start for its first three years, good times.
Its the only game that had pulled me away from WOW for a while
I did the trial, everyone swore it got better at such and such, so I kept playing. Got to 60, so I had to actually buy the game. Bought the game, still literally nothing but questing 99.9 pct of the game.
No matter how far I got into the game, it was STILL JUST QUESTING. how can anyone possibly recommend that game to someone who is an endgame player of wow?
