Is it bad that it took me like 3 minutes to figure out the “bad word”?
What does one even say to something this stupid?
Twitch better undo this, ‘stupid’ isn’t strong enough to describe how dumb this is, but I’d get actioned if I said what I really felt about this.
They can’t, it’s too close to a word that isn’t allowed on the forums and is also a slur.
Don’t worry I’m sure the cults that follow these streamers will tantrum until twitch undoes it.
On a serious note though, if they are being banned for using the word “Naga” when discussing the Naga race in a video game it should be undone. Just because it sounds similar doesn’t mean it’s the same meaning.
I can almost guarantee that’s not what happened, but people will pretend that’s what happened so they can feel good about getting mad at minorities.
Considering the content of the next patch, I can 100% guarantee you that a lot of these suspensions are undeserved.
What about this involves being mad at minorities?
Is it wrong that this slightly amuses me? Not really happy people are being punished but… ya know.
Maybe I am alone.
You use a sentence that would have the other word. And instead substitute “naga”. You wouldn’t be actually discussing the Naga. Only using it to mask a vulgarity.
I am not saying that is what happened. Only suggesting how it could be used in that particular way.
The problem is, “naga” (at least according to Twitch), can be construed to be a way of saying the n-word, which mentioning said n-word is a fast way to get fired from your job. Unfortunately, with Patch 8.2 focusing on Queen Azshara, a lot of people are getting banned because they mention naga (to describe Queen Azshara’s troops) and some people are thinking “oh my god, this streamer is being racist.”
Although to be fair, a few streamers might have used “naga” in a inflammatory way (or tried to make a joke about the naga race that might be better off not being made), but I’m fairly sure 90% of the bans are undeserved and are probably because someone got butthurt.
I’m sure since Blizzard and Twitch have a partnership with one another (due to esports), I’m reasonably sure Blizzard is going to have to contact Twitch soon enough and explain to them why all these streamers are saying “naga” and offer a bit of context.
And if Twitch refuses to be reasonable, I’m sure Blizzard will be more than happy to pull most of their broadcasts off the Twitch platform until they make changes.
Edit: Fixed a couple sentences.
This is basically what I expect happened. One or two people (or a small group, whatever), used it inappropriately. That caused a chain reaction where anyone using at all was blanket dealt with.
Twitch Drama of the highest content.
LOL its true i stop watching him its all he does.
It is because the streamer used Naga and an alternative to a slur.
He wasn’t being subtle about it.
Moving on.
So he was effectively using masked language? Yeah, probably should have been popped for that.
just means you are pure
Obviously anyone who does this earned their ban. I would hope if it was a blanket ban, those who were using Naga to refer to actual Naga in the game will be reinstated.
As one a black person I can tell you that they knew what they were doing. They were trying to play the whole plausible deniability game. Seen it many times! Trying to work around racist behavior with code words. Then acting shocked when called out.
And on a side note. Why should anyone care if a streamer gets banned? I sure as hell don’t! I don’t even care what they have to say. I don’t get my opinions from others I form my own.
Correct. He was even encouraging his chat to join in.
I don’t know if anyone has been banned for that, I would assume they would be reinstated, though.
That is a justified ban. He should be blacklisted by the community as well for making it difficult for others who may be using it for its actual meaning.
