Deleted my level 80 Warlock named Dexter on Moon Guard last week or so. I guess the 90 day hold didn’t take effect, the name is gone today. Hope the lucky someone enjoys it!!
are u sure your on the realm your character was
I did, says name is taken. I really don’t mind though, I’m really happy with the names I’m using. I wanted to free it up to give to my friend, he plays a human rogue and Dexter is his favorite show, lol. Gotta break the news to him tomorrow.
that is weird because it’s suppose to be 30 days iirc. could ticket it maybe. are you forced name change when you revive him?
There is always:
XxDexterxX
a/s/l?
I miss AOL and IRC.
Not enough symbols in that name. You can thank me later.
I think I’ve had it once but that was only before a server merge.
Ish/Elk/Just/Wish/Jet on the same server I’ve been on since i started.
Sorry for your friend! Hope they get a good name for their rogue.
Momiee is correct, the hold should only be for 30 days. That said, if the name has been added to Blizzard’s list of names we can’t use, then it would no longer be available once deleted. It’s possible you were grandfathered in for already having it.
Best way to check is to try and add them as a friend on the same server and see if it lets you.
I think his current name is even better, it’s “Buddy” lol. But it’s on our original realm when we first started, Earthen Ring, which is pretty dead nowadays.
It’s my understanding the purges happen at specific time intervals as a whole and not just individually. sounds like it was very bad timing from the time you deleted the character to the time they did the purge. I would say if you ever have need of giving away a name in the future again do it on the same day that way there’s no risk of loss.
This would be how they used to do it for character names on inactive accounts.
Now, the system looks at time of character creation, to see if a name is on an inactive account that meets the criteria. That being, the entire battle.net account has to be dormant (more or less) for 2 expansions.
Deleting a character is different. It locks the name to your battle.net account for 30 days if the character is level 30 or higher. Otherwise, it makes the name available immediately.
So why did you bother replying with incorrect information that the OP can’t even use then?
They’re friend can’t snag the name with a name change for 30 days from the minute the OP deleted them.
Sorry that I corrected you to better help the OP. You’re welcome anyway.
I had the names ‘Toilet’ and ‘Turd’ on Illidan, years ago lol, like back in Cataclysm.
Quickly grew tired of the names and dumped them, but I know someone else has them by now lol.
Pixy coming in hot!
Grab some hay bales, she ain’t stopping!
It’s okay Pixy, I’m not trying to impress anyone, just help the OP out. I get that you’re not and that you, in your own words, don’t care.
Understanding how the system works, even for others in the future seems more helpful that providing wrong info.
Sorry that your feelings got hurt when being corrected. I’ll toss you on ignore so that I don’t have to see you continue your odd crusade of not caring and providing wrong info.
Not gonna lie that is an awesome name!
It was definitely taken by someone else. I tried sending a test email to Dexter and it said that the name belongs to the other faction. So for whatever reason, the 30 day hold failed to hold.
My husband is pushing me to submit a ticket but I don’t want to take the name away from someone else who might have been so happy to get that name on Moon Guard. My friend is over it anyway lol.
Thanks everyone for your input!!
That’s definitely odd!
Well, if you change your mind, you can use this link to put in a ticket:

If the character was indeed level 80, it absolutely should have locked to your account. I think it’s admirable to let the other party keep it though. Either way, I’d recommend maybe using the in-game Bug Report feature to at least report the issue (it won’t result in the name being taken back, just that QA will look into the bug) so that it doesn’t happen to others!
Fantastic idea, thanks Perl!
