WoW Not Launching from BattleNet

I noticed the same issue, I’m running a 7900xtx and 7700x. While the game stops crashing when changing to DirectX 11, I wouldn’t call it playable. I’m really hoping AMD and/or Blizzard manage a fix soon. The new announcements have me hyped to come back but it’s dying pretty quickly with issues like this.

Just skip the intro movie or wait.

Running an AMD RX 6750 XT card here. The “fix” involving DX11 did get me into the game at last, so thanks. Whether the game is playable on DX11 (on my setup) remains to be seen.

what do you mean about launcher? I can’t get blizzard.exe to open

For everyone, including the devs. It’s worth noting that the proving grounds seem to be a great way of replicating this issue.

AMD ryzen 7 5800x
Amd 7900xt
32gigs
windows 11.
1k PSU.

My pc is a beast, with DX12 I could not get past round 8-12 in the proving grounds without the drivers timing out. Without fail, the drivers would time out within these rounds in the endless proving grounds, sometimes within 1-3 rounds, but more often rounds 8-12.

After going into my game settings and putting -d3d11 in the additional arguments. I was able to get to round 20 within the proving grounds. The game easily plays above 100+ fps without issue, I personally consider this resolved for the time being, but it’s possible the drivers may still time out but I don’t know.

Additionally. I would suspect the issue is within some expressions of DX12, and within these expressions or lines of code, it’s them causing issues in some games that are heavily relying on DX12 for performance, as I have heard WoW isn’t the only game seeing this issue atm. Not sure if it’s specific to AMD. But running on DX11 seems to work fine for now.

I have nvidia and on windows 10 and I can open the blizzard.exe

I am trying to play on an M1 Mac and none of these solutions work, I click “Play” and see “Launching” for about 20 seconds then the button returns to saying “Play” and literally nothing happens.

All of the permissions had to be fixed in order to even install and patch the game, which I have done.

I have attempted to add the command line argument to use DX11, but this had no effect, this is a fresh WoW install as of yesterday (never been on the machine before) and I am getting royally peeved about the whole thing.

Same issue came up for me.

The resolutions to swap to DX11 fixed it.

A trend I’m seeing in the thread is AMD cards, with at least one other person having the exact same card as me. AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

Seems related.

Same problem, WoWClassic.exe just hangs and doesn’t start up. Adding the command line -d3d11 makes it work.

AMD RX 6600
AMD Adrenalin Edition Version 23.11.1
i5-13600KF
Windows 10

ok ive been messing around with the ati software and think ive found a fix. (atleast it worked for us)

go to your ati options and make sure “vrr” is turned off. dont know why this causes an issue but since the update on 15/11/23 starting wow classic did somthing to the gpu output which fixed if i unplugged and plugged the cable back in. turns out vrr was the issue.

good luck hope this helps ppl

This did not fix it for me. I turned off AMD FreeSync (variable-refresh-rate technology) but the game will still not start unless I force it to use DX11.

Thanks this fixed it for me. I even updated the AMD drivers and it still wasn’t working.

I’ve updated my drivers and I’m still having to use -d3d11 to boot the game. My FPS is way down. Please look at this soon.

Just adding to this, I would load and I would get a black screen which would crash when I clicked on the screen. NOTHING worked, not scan & Repair, clear cache, nothing…re-logging. Updating drivers…nada.

What worked was -d3d11 added in.

I am on an all AMD system. HP Omen laptop, Ryzen and AMD GPU

Changing to DX11 is not the solution to this issue. It is a work around until there is a fix.
It’s been 10 days since they’ve acknowledge this issue.
An issue that was mentioned during the PTR.

Thank you thank you thank you. I just found this post cause I just got a new card. Tried legit everything

I logged into classic once in Oct before AMD driver update 23.11.1. I was able to login like normal. All AMD system, using an AMD 6700 XT. Then today I attempted to login with wow just timing out when I hit the play button. The fix absolutely was adding -d3d11. Until they push a fix for dx12 this is really the only option that will work. I was able to login after that.

-d3d11 worked
AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT
AMD Ryzen 5600 G

Thanks for the solution

Now if I could get wow to alt+tab without moving too slow to do anything at all… like use discord or something useful like that

Been having this issue. the -d3d11 worked for a week and now it’s back to fake launching but not actually showing up.

MSI motherboard
NVIDIA 2060
Intel i9 processor

I’ve had this issue since late Shadowlands. I’ve trying the code the blue post recommended which did not work. And there were posts with people mentioning deleting the battle.net data folder to make ti work.

The one thing that has sort of worked is checking " Never auto update in Battle.net app." in the battle net settings.
