I think its just hard to do unless you specifically set up for it from the start of a project. Suddenly seeing different human just " appear" without any lore is jarring. Moreso as humans have a different genesis in wow it just adds more questions that are never answered.
When it comes to sexuality… I felt the centuar over did it. There gets a point where diversity starts to go so far it kind of becomes unintentional comedy like wheelchair Dracthyr.
Then you have the really badly done representation like the magic shield prosthetics. Where they don’t work within the game lore.
What I am saying is it can work but you have to take in the existing worlds lore when you do it.
While I do look like I should be a prude, I am far, far too nosey to be one.
Oh, all of that was pretty forced from diversity pushes in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. You were reaping the benefits of those. I am bummed that you did not mention Tia Carra Relic Hunter, that show was good.
NPC: “Hey there traveler! I have a task for you, if you’re in need of coin.”
ME: “Uh, maybe. What’s your sexual orientation and self identity?”
NPC: “Um… why do you need to know that?”
ME: “Trust me. It’s important. I might not do it if I don’t like your answer.”
I can’t see that happening. Why would ANYONE care? This isn’t a dating app. That NPC you think is hot is not going to go out with you. lol
I always skip those scenes in shows, movies or games. Love dramas are either boring or annoying. The only exception is when it’s used as a killer motive in a thriller or something.
Which kind of demographic actually wants that stuff?
Don’t be, I firmly believe that without the check boxes we would not see these characters at all. Just look at WoW of the past, where those types of characters there? No because they did not think to put them in. Which we all should be more astonished by.
Alien and the role she played in that movie would have normally be cast as male. It was super ground breaking, like making Samus female in Metroid.
I’ve been a user of the forums for… many years. This character here reset the stats because I changed race/name in-game, so it affected things here. I mention this because, as far as I can remember, people have always complained about those couples you mentioned, those quests, etc.
I mentioned Dragon Age 3 (and I don’t think it’s fair to exclude it or disregard this part) because it does exactly what WoW should have done from the beginning: the main plot of the story differs from the personal plot of each individual.
(to be fair…dragon age 3 did better than almost all games in this regard)
I agree that when it’s couples who deviate from the “norms,” it draws attention, but I can also categorically say that many friends and I detest quests involving Tyrande + Malfurion or Thrall’s quests.
Now… there’s one small problem. As far as we know in the WoW universe, reproduction still follows a standard procedure and modus operandi. So knowing about the children of certain characters is important for the overall progression of the story, and then this is an exception, but it’s just to the “warcraft” to continue…
It’s why the original LoTRs and GoT is cast the way it is and it’s why rings of power show is so bad.
Most classic fantasy is based off medieval European age. The classic wow orcs vs humans is based off that fantasy.
Where the representation your asking for doesn’t exist.
That is why these DEI characters face backlash.
They don’t make sense in the setting.
It COULD exist. It just never gets touched on ever… take the wheel of time. In the novel they draw out different cultures at length and go into massive details to flesh out and build the world.
In the show they just toss it out. There is a world of difference between having diversity that makes sense and tokenism.
