They did that with Priests in vanilla, but from what I recall everyone BAWWWWWed about it.
I’m with you, though, this is one of the things I liked about the TTRPG (before the WoWRPG anyways, that was a steaming pile of dookie). Maybe make a super-generic version of classes with some lore behind it, that functions mechanically similarly to the race-fluffed versions of the classes. So a Night Elf Sentinel (Survival Hunter) would look different from a generic “Survivalist”, but function the same mechanically; a Pandaren Geomancer (Shaman) would be more or less the same as a “Elementalist”… something like that.
You need to review your Warcraft lore if you don’t know the link between death knights, cult of the damned, and Kel’Thuzad. You can get started here:
You can champion the idea of necromancers all you like. The reason Festergrin and I gave against them isn’t a deal breaker, Blizzard did create demon hunters and paladins afterall. But there is already long standing Warcraft lore behind necromancers. And while it isn’t totally out of character for Blizzard to “recontextualize,” considering the extent of the lore behind this particular class, that isn’t likely. Especially since most people would be confused with a necromancer that doesn’t raise dead or cast death and decay like previous death knights, liches, and others.
They said if that’s all you have to say, not that there isn’t counter arguments.
No one complained about similar abilities until DH took meta when both could of had it. How many threads are there complaining fire mage and destro just burn people as intelligence casters wearing cloth. Where are the complaints both holy and holy cast holy spells to heal their team?
An ice bomb that chases a target increasing by range. Dks want to be close, locks don’t use ice.
Soul jar thing, either passive like the soul bind for fae or active teleport to jar when killed. Dks have purgatory and locks aren’t innately undead.
I have more ready to go but don’t want to waste the effort.
This such a bad take, like holy crap is it such a bad take. I love holy priest and blood DK, guess Blizz should of made them better. I can’t stand playing mage beyond meme building, should of made the class better. I had no idea how great any of the DLC classes could be till they were added, if they actually made a good game there would be no reason to add them. People who want a mechanic based class just should hope for rogue or hunter to fully satisfy that itch.
Either add a new ranged weapon class or turn a few melee specs into ranged specs.
Rogues and warriors used to be able to use bows/xbows/guns. Why not give them each a ranged spec? Subtlety could become a shadowy bow user (isn’t it more subtle to snipe from the shadows than stab up close?). Roll the sub melee abilities into assassination, because they are already conceptually very similar.
Since fury can use two 2h weapons, it kinda makes arms feel pointless and redundant. After all, fury is basically arms x2. So arms could become a ranged spec, maybe focusing on explosive weaponry like some sort of artilleryman. Old arms specific melee abilities would be rolled into fury.
dang every tinker wanter i see gatekeep other class idea’s just strengthens my desire to create a looks like tinker won’t be the next class thread once the expansion is officially announced. can’t wait, hurry up blizzard so i can post it.
