Why don’t they do maintenance at night? Every time I want to come to the game I find that there is maintenance and just tomorrow there will be maintenance almost all day
Blizzard chose the times they did for maintenance since that’s when the least amount of players would be impacted. Although maintenance starts at 10 AM on the east coast, that’s when most players there would be a work or school. On the west coast, it starts at 7 AM, which is when most people would just be waking up.
It is impossible to choose a time that wouldn’t inconvenience someone. The middle of the night for one person could be the middle of the day for another. People who are in Europe might also play on North American realms and would be impacted by the maintenance. Conversely, people in North America might play on European realms, and thus would also be impacted by the maintenance periods in the EU.
When major patches are being deployed, maintenance periods are longer to allow for adequate testing and verification.
It’s a global game. No matter when they do maintenance, it’s going to be inconvenient for someone. They have chosen the maintenance schedule they have so that the fewest number of people are adversely impacted.
It’s always daytime somewhere.
You find there is maintenance, or there’s simply a note that maintenance will be happening in a couple days, generally on Tuesday?
Yes, it’s Tuesday and it’s a major patch day. This is pretty standard.
Let’s not forget that uh… actually employees have to be there and they probably wouldn’t want to do a 9pm to 6am shift.
Peak concurrent login is evening in each Region. After people get home from work and school, eat dinner, and settle in to enjoy some down time.
The Americas Region comprises not just the Americas - it also includes South East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. With the time zone differences our early AM in the US is prime time there.
They do Maint during the historically lowest concurrent player logins which is Tuesday mornings during work/school. Most in the US are engaged in daytime activities, and the AUS/NZ folks are asleep.
It is also when a much larger number of people are at work to support anything that goes wrong. They have Monday to prepare for it then the rest of the week to sort out issues if something has problems.
It won’t ever be perfect, but that is why the times are set when they are.
This has been happening every Tuesday in WoW for more than 20 years. Many many other companies also update on Tuesdays.
Let’s be honest here. You really mean “Why don’t they do maintenance at a time I’m not trying to play?” And the answer is “they do maintenance when the majority of the player base isn’t trying to play, and if you’re not in the majority, so sorry.”
Now, folks have been answering like you’re asking a genuine question, rather than a rhetorical question framing a suggestion to change the company’s maintenance schedule. If you are intending that, post on General Discussion, because the people who decide things like maintenance schedules don’t accept feedback from the Support forums.
