I just started playing FF14, and wow, it’s a superior modern MMO to WoW in every way, shape, and form.
It has a better story, is more in depth, has more content, and just a better treatment of its playerbase over all. On top of that it gives the players so much freedom to do what they want. Oh yeah, it also has player housing, something that people asked for in this game a long time ago and have never gotten.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I think it wins in some ways, loses in others.
I haven’t played the most recent expansion but when I played FF14 before, almsot every boss was a separate instance of you on a circular shaped platform vs. only the boss. Felt like the world was all separately chopped up instances instead of any open world sort of aspect.
Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying WoW is a sandbox, but compared to FF14 it feels a lot more open.
Both are good, different reasons.

I loved ff14. Heavensward and Shadowbringers as some of the best story I ever played through. There was a certain npc that died in heavensward and it brought me to tears.
The issue I have with FF14 is the endgame. Wow has a superior endgame that ff14 doesn’t have. I got bored of FF14 and took a break. In an interview Naoki said that he doesnt want people to be forced to be subbed everyday of every month and that it is okay if you take a break. Wow keeps me playing everyday ff14 does not.

i absolutely hated FF14 because i couldnt stop comparing it to WoW.
And the constant feeling of “This feels like a horrible version of WoW”.

I think it’s better in a lot of ways but definitely not in all of them
I’ve played both on and off for years now (more than a decade in WoW’s case) and I’ve definitely got my fair share of things I love and loathe about both
FF’s biggest problems for me are the UI, player housing disaster I mean system, spell delay, janky PvP, and lack of general replayability in a lot of the more casual content
I’ve had plenty of fun rerunning old content and pvping in WoW though

FFXIV also has better fan-service.
People like Final Fantasy Tactics? Let’s put an FFT story-line and raid tier into the game. Let’s also throw some Vagrant Story references in there to top the fan service pie.
People like Final Fantasy 8? Yeah, let’s go ahead and throw some FF8 themed dungeons and a raid tier into the game.
People like Kefka and Ex-Death? Yeah, they’re just going to show up as raid bosses. Done.
Imagine if Blizzard actually took off their power-limiting bracers and went full-ham. Like, straight up include Diablo as a raid boss. Include The Overmind as a raid boss. You guys liked Warcraft 2? Let’s go ahead and add another Caverns of Time stand-alone raid where we travel back in time and help the Alliance take down Deathwing during the Second War, giving us the Deathwing raid boss we’ve always wanted, not popping pimples on his back.
I feel like Burning Crusade went overboard and blew their load a little bit, but it at least felt like they believed they had to try to win the fans. Illidan? Check. Kael’thas? Check. Fighting at the Battle of Hyjal, the biggest moment in WoW lore up to that point? Check.
Blizzard feels like they’re not trying to win the fans anymore. Too many players are simply addicted to WoW and play even when Blizzard shovels giant pirate parrot bird poop in their mouth.

I can’t get over the awful, non-responsive combat. It’s so slow and boring.
I do like my cute bunny girl though.

I tried it, didnt care for it, have said that on just about every post by people coming here to compare FF to WoW and say it’s better.
If you don’t enjoy WoW and do enjoy Final Fantasy, then the choice is obvious. There are lots of games out there to choose from, play what works for you.
I do note though, that I really didn’t like their version of player housing. They have these weird precincts where you have to build a house (presuming you can find a spot to do that which isn’t taken) rather than having it phased into its own little pocket of existence as it done in other games. The layouts are pretty ordinary and the design isn’t to my taste at all. ESO does it much better, and even Wildstar had a better set up.
Maybe somebody could do some other comparisons, the whole “FF is better than WoW” is getting old.

I thought that too for the first week I played FF14. The opinion didn’t last the second week and the game didn’t survive a third on my computer. It’s a very pretty but the story is pretty standard gamer stuff and it’s just as grindy as any other MMO.

I enjoy FF and WoW equally in different ways…but YES FF pvp is horrid. FF is obviously a heavily RP and PvE based mmo, which is okay for me but i definitely am a huge pvper and need that in a game.

I played both… and… Im still in the world of WoW ^^
I hated the FF leveling and lore pacing… too much talkings (bla bla bla) and map changes; oh god… I hate that loading screen on every map change!
So… yeah… FF is a great game too, but WoW is still the number 1! ^^

Weird, could not make it past level 10 in that game.

I see why people like it but it’s not for me. The 14 devs treat their PvP playerbase like we are their red-headed step child. They don’t balance the game at all, we get next to 0 updates regarding said balancing, and receive no new maps or gamemodes. The end game content isn’t too time consuming or difficult and I ended up running out of things to do quickly.
However, the crafting and other activities outside of combat are amazing in 14. It just wasn’t enough to keep me though. To each their own.

I like player housing actually existing somewhere. Back during DAOC I had a little one-story house, it wasn’t in the ghetto but it wasn’t in the most wealthy neighborhoods. I could go to my neighborhood and I had a nice little one story house that had my enchanting lab all setup. I had a bunch of taxidermied critters of all my favorite pets and a nice little dragon head on the wall, and I could go around and visit my next-door-neighbors and see what’s going on in their house.
The instanced housing stuff is weird to me. It feels “made-up”, a total fantasy if it doesn’t actually exist within a physical space in the game world.
