Wow, doesn't feel like Warcraft anymore?

Why is this so depressingly accurate?

See, I don’t even think the story is neccesarily breathtaking or marvelous or an example of the very best of the game; a lot of it is frankly pretty mid.

But For me, DF is serving a useful purpose as an expansion themed around rebirth; we get to see this echoed in every zone and group with the various factions all working to create a new age for themselves and moving beyond the problems of the past. That’s an incredibly refreshing direction for the game to go in during it’s 9th expansion.

And the game has these quiet moments that tell us a lot about the world; The dragonmaw veteran, the discussion between Ebyssian and Emberthal, Sabellian and Wrathion seeing each other as something other then impediments to their own ascension… To me well written bits like this are so much better then having another cut scene where a bodybuilder shoots magic at a BBEG or I go and collect 8 boar gonads.

I mean, it is what it is?

enviromental social governance, basically globo mega corps like blackrock wont invest in you unless you bend your product to include the latest civil rights fad & climate change dogma. Hail Larry Fink the new god emperor of the american empire.

Deathwing didn’t do what he did because he was a black dragon. He was corrupted by the Old Gods. The rest of the black dragons would only support them if they supported the Old Gods.

This is also the entire plot of the zaralek cavern campaign.

Two bickering black dragon princes go in trying to see who gets to be king, and an upstart outsider wants to overthrow the whole system. the younger prince comes to terms with the fact he is just one of his father’s war crimes into cloning, and older prince gets infected by the void and almost becomes the monster his father did literally. the young upstart is horrified into paralysis when she oversees the death of her counterpart that is still loyal to deathwing, realizing the only thing that makes her different from her target is the side she allied with.

the first sees his pragmatism and focus on the future in his father’s inhuman experiments, and is horrified. wrathion realizes he is the son of deathwing, not neltharion.

the second sees his singleminded push for racial strength and tradition in his father’s warmongering, and is horrified. sebellian realizes just how easily a neltharion can become a deathwing.

the upstart shuts up and pays attention for the first time in her life. Thank God.

in the end they all realize that their long-suffering attendant is the only one fit to lead any of them, as he is the nothing like neltharion actually was and everything they erroneously believed neltharion to be.

That is ALMOST good writing, Bravo blizzard!

sylvanas isnt an irl character and she was written during bfa and shadowlands by someone who intended to destroy and by staff who wanted to save her making but are not good at writting a story seen with shadowlands and bfa oh and dragon flight.

Not really. Mainly due to the fact the story has not been created from thin air. They have expanded on existing lore. Shadowlands did seem to be a bit more generic fantasy though.

Wow, for me, he die with the Lich King… what comes later in the story is a mischaracterization of the races and characters with incredible stories that were thrown in the trash… The orcs that were a race of bloodthirsty warriors became a silly, almost childless race… the undead who lost their humanity and became sadistic psychopaths, became circus clowns… The night elves were basically savages who killed anyone who entered their lands, along with Tyrande, a warrior over 10,000 years old, taking orders from the Anduin, an 18-year-old boy… they became normal elves from any fantasy tale… ARTHAS, who is the greatest character created by Blizzard, became 35 anima…

Yea, it is a nice change of pace, tbh. And practically speaking, not having faction tags does make things a lot easier. I’m sure at some point soon enough we will go back to bashing each other over the head.

Actually Sylvanas is older than the World of Warcraft MMO. She first appeared in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

Eventually they’ll run out of sea to place those island in, at which time continental drift should occur, merging all those islands into Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, to create two SUPER continents.

Maybe, maybe not. But having played this game (with but one extended break) since the release of TBC, I have noticed a subtle – but significant – shift in the game’s direction. It started out as “gamers making games for gamers.” I feel (and this is just one person’s opinion, your milage may be different) that what we get now is designers, developers, and coders making games to maximize shareholders’ return on their investments.

I’m not anti-shareholder-sharing-in-the-profits. But the motivation appears to have changed (again, just one person’s opinion). The “target audience” has shifted from gamers being the priority to shareholder interests being the priority. That doesn’t come from the guys in the trenches; it comes from the “generals” behind the lines in their comfy chairs behind mahogany desks and “I love me wall” behind them.

That’s a given in nearly any late-stage capitalist corporation, though.

The goal is almost always to increase shareholder value at the cost of everything else. If it increases profit (or some C-suite exec thinks it will), it’s in the game, if it’s not, it’s out.

You could argue that ESG goes against this idea. Eventually this change in tone will do irreparable harm to the game and hurt overall revenue.

The games been around for 20 years… don’t see how it could. Maybe Metzen can bring back some of that older Warcraft vide. But trying to keep a game fresh while also having it feel familiar has to be a pretty hard thing to do…
