The East Coast has about half the population. Now of course Central is next, but it wouldn’t make sense to ask the West Coast to play on servers two hours ahead. Having East(+Central) and West(+Mountain because of how few are there) makes the most sense to have everyone at or within 1 hour.

Eve online has about 607,107 active players.

I dont know how many realms are worldwide (EU, Asia, Taiwan
) but if classic can get around 40,000 active players per realm worldwide, with about 40 servers thats about 1.5+ million active players.

You said coasties and were complaining about the servers being East and West. Perhaps you should add the Eastern Seaboard to your population numbers.
No, I do not think the middle of the country is empty, or anything less worthy than the rest. It is, however, less populated than the combined west and east coasts. Also, and once again for the reading impaired, ALL NON WEST COAST SERVERS ARE BASED IN CHICAGO WHICH IS CENTRAL TIME. just sayin.

Blizz goes cheap on the hardware for Classic launch. Typical big corp decision that is potentially penny wise and pound foolish.

If done right, they could bring in a large amount of new subs for at least 6-12 months. They’re selling themselves short here. The last thing you want to have happen is people quitting early due to enormous server congestion.

Vanilla servers had around 15-25k active players on the servers
 with a 3k cap.

You are counting as if concurrent players=total players.

only 20-30% of the population actually plays at any one time.

All the EST servers are in Chicago. While you might have to adjust thinking by an hour, you’re on the good ping.

“Raid time is 8/7C” should be something Central is used to right?

they can’t, but most streamers will thankfully choose the same server so it should be easy to avoid them for the most part
