WoW Classic led to the biggest quarterly increase in subs in WoW history

On the other side of the coin: would Blizzard say to the shareholders with a straight face “Instead of potentially infinitely adding content to Classic, we’re going to cut down the lifespan of one of our most well-earning products significantly by releasing TBC which will only last a year before kicking the bucket.”

Would that also not be leaving money on the table? Either way, they’re going to be doing something after Classic, that’s guaranteed at this point, but it won’t necessarily be TBC.

If they were smart, they would drag Classic out AT LEAST to 2 years. TBC will come, there is almost no scenario that I can think of which does not involve them releasing that expansion.

Creating classic + requires a significant investment with no reasonable prediction of return. It’s a complete gamble. Releasing BC requires almost no investment with some degree of a likely return. I’m not pushing for one over the other. I’m not a no changer. I don’t care much what blizz does. It just seems unlikely they’re going to make that large investment when BC can be released almost for free.

The smart thing to do would be to monitor subscription numbers and the amount of classic players as well as the levels of the player alts. And release bc before too many people get bored with classic. No one knows what that time table will be.

this tells me that the new style of content is not as popular as content released between launch and WoTLK

Wrath is modern design, what you talking about?

Did anyone see the “Blizzard leak” on 8-chan back in August? For the record I’m not a fan and I never knew it existed prior to the very tragic El Paso situation. Anyway, I went to the site to see if said manifesto actually existed but I didn’t get far because I was more intrigued by the “Blizzard Leak”.

I don’t know if the thread is still there because I never went back but it was a very interesting read. It seemed too specific to be fake but then who knows. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post about it (?) but I’m curious if anyone saw the thread? (Not the manifesto, the Blizzard one).

WotLK was the peak of the game’s actual growth. The only reason you blindly see it in TBC is because this spike was towards the end of TBC close to prepatch when people wanted to log into WoW to prepare for the WotLK race. It wasn’t TBC that caused the spike, it was WotLK. Illidan is proud to see so many people Prepared.

That would have to be speculation. I’ve never seen blizz release anything but total subscriptions numbers.

Classic did make a boost no doubt a bout it. It is saving retail which is currently dead. Classic servers are still full and some have que times at peak hours.
Retail they had to combine servers because it is dead and still is dead. They had to CRZ retail and it is still dead.
Classic also brought the private server community players aboard too.

Really you got a source all those people subbed for arthas? A legit source? Or are you just another person talking?

WoW consistently got more popular as BC and WotLK came out because they were great additions to the game. Cataclysm did to the sub numbers what Cataclysm did to Azeroth.

Microtransactions.

You seem like a candy crush professional.
Can you give me one example of micro transaction for candy crush?
I played that game once or twice and still can’t imagine what You’d be paying daily for

wow classic will lead to the biggest quarterly drop off in subs by 2020.

I’d call Wrath a hybrid/transitional phase. While they were experimenting with the linear quest design that rose to prevalence so sharply in Cata, they were still using traditional quest hubs; and gear design was in a transitional phase as well. It’s certainly nothing like the current design of the game so calling it “modern” is a bit off. It has more in common with, say, MoP.

I’d call WoD “early modern” WoW, myself.

I would prefer all future content for Classic stays on Azeroth, but there are some great things BC added.

The BC version of the Dungeon Finder was the best iteration of grouping for dungeons. Its halfway between Vanilla and WOTLK. It doesn’t automatically create groups for you, but adds an interface to pick and choose who to bring, freeing up world chat and LFG from the spam.

The talents are great additions. Good Spec balances.

But, it does bring Arena into the game, which is something I hope Blizzard despearately avoids doing.

Never once played it. It was a guess.

Edit: it’s pre-installed bloatware on my computer so I guess I could check

id like to just skip tbc and go straight to wotlk, wotlk has the best story line/dungens/raids and game play content.
Vault of Archavon
Naxxramas
The Obsidian Sanctum
The Eye of Eternity
Ulduar
Trail of the Crusader
Onyxia’s Lair
Icecrown Citadel
The Ruby Sanctum
Best content you will ever see in history wow world of warcraft…

My friends that play classic have not played retail in years and are misinformed from internet misinformation. If you give Shadowlands a try, you will probably like it. BFA, Legion, WoD were too far from the comfort zone to understand, and peeps just say it’s bad before even doing any end game content. It overwelms them basically. Classic is simple.
