So the option to turn profanity filter off should be removed?
You can consider my pearls absolutely clutched.

No. You should actually follow the rules you agreed to.
Also keep in mind, that kids play these games and Blizzard mostly enforces things in public chats/groups. What you and your friends say in private groups is up to you.
Blizz understands that and allows people to turn it off.
Freedom of speech is freedom of consequences but I agree with your sentiment that no private business has to or sould have to put up with speech they don’t want to hear on their property
Why? It’s still up to the consumer to allow potentially nasty words to come through, with the benefit of never having poor filtering cover a word that is wrongly filtered.
Or, genuinely, my case. I just don’t care about the words, so I turn the filter off so I can see all of the context to what someone said.
No I don’t want bad words said in wow. It should be aggressively enforced. Profanity filter turning off must be removed.
Eh. I get what you mean, but the spirit of what both of you are saying is still pretty right. Freedom of speech doesn’t magically protect you from retributive action, but it also does absolutely protect you from action being taken against you for speaking your mind within the law. Threats were already talked about, so I won’t rehash.
I love how any time a hyperbolic point is made, people double down when met with the reality of why things are the way they are.
Double down? How about triple down: All chat channels need to be removed for the protection of the player base.
Funny, but they did that in Diablo 2 Resurected and Diablo Immortal. Both are rated M, both fall under the exact same Code of Conduct as WoW, and both have a filter you can’t turn off. Heh. Of course trying to go around the filter and being a horrible person with slurs and stuff, can still be reported and actioned.
I would not want that in WoW though. I prefer people get to make up their own mind.
The idea that “but Blizzard did not force me to stop so I should not get blamed” thing that I have seen some people do is ridiculous.
Personal responsibility is a thing. If you agree not to use profanity, slurs, etc. It is on the player to control their fingers and take responsibility if they don’t. Much like speeding tickets. It is up to use to keep an eye on it and while not everyone gets caught, if you do you get a ticket.
And yes, I realize you are being hyperbolic for effect.
At least you’re self-aware, I’ll give you points for that.
Well thank goodness for that! Whew, the players can feel truly protected now.
Freedom of speech is freedom from government enforced consequences. It doesn’t mean you can’t face consequences in any part of your life for things you say. You can still get divorced if you chew out your wife for example.
This still has its caveats, as well.
Of course. For example, you cannot threaten the life of the president.
Also in less extreme cases. For example the fellow in Lima, Ohio that satirized police. Thankfully that has turned into a big case with the Onion going to bat for the guy. I haven’t checked up on the progress with that in a while, I probably should.
by the end of the first day of middle school your kid will know more profanity than you do and more than likely use it around his peers but not you. its not like we all hit 18 and suddenly knew a few extra words.
given that some player’s toons are getting old enough to vote, IMO we could do with a system of barriers and age based segregation in game. if they don’t want adults talking like its a dive bar across the whole game, why not allow it in the bars in game and phase out children’s accounts. i have to show my ID to buy certain green themed items online, players can verify ID to unlock access to adult areas of the game.
It’s not really out of concern for the players, but rather as an extra layer of defense against lawsuits
None, like Preston Brooks he’s a coward and wouldn’t show up.
I don’t like beets, pineapple, or avocados.
But then I don’t like sweet potatoes or yams but love sweet potato pie, so I’d be willing to give it a try.
You can say what you want in private chat. Same concept. Guilds are also “at will” and designed to filter applicants to adults only if you want. Egregious stuff in guild can still be reported, but Blizz feels mostly that people can leave guild. They really only act on public chat and public groups.
That would change the game rating and I don’t think they would do that.
