WOTLK Classic 2.0

Hi, I wanted to float the topic of keeping WOTLK as it’s own separate game and not launching Cataclysm, while also building off of the WOTLK game world.

New content, building off of WOTLK lore, would be great. Plenty of other games have released additional content after the “final” boss to keep players busy. It would also be interesting if Vanilla and TBC raids were scaled to level 80 with the same item level gear as ICC. Then potentially a new raid after ICC scaled up in difficulty plus new PVP seasons, etc.

I realize it’s a longshot, but releasing Cataclysm as a “classic” game mode doesn’t make much sense to me. It’s the pre-Cataclysm levelling process, world PVP, and excellent PVE end-game content that people seem to appreciate as “classic.” We were discussing the same in trade chat on Mankrik today. Only 1 person wanted Cata to release and 5 wanted to keep WOTLK. Thoughts?

I think that WOTLK has the potential to be more popular in the long-term than continuing to re-release each expansion. What would be really interesting would be to add new dungeons/raids exploring the history of Thrall, Arthas, and some of the other major characters. Something like a prequel or focus on the story so far.

Thanks for your thread but this is not going to happen.

Hence “longshot”

I read your thread, don’t worry. It is not going to happen in any world. Classic+ is even more feasible than Blizzard actually doing Wrath content.
Besides everyone already knows that Cata is unavoidable at this point, even if it doesn’t make sense to you. Classic is just a re-release branding term, it is not specifically tied to “old world”. Also not entirely sure what part of Wrath makes it more Vanilla than Cata. Expect, well, the old world (which everyone wants to skip in Wrath Classic currently may I add)

Cata did change a lot of things, It would be nice if blizz did this, I kinda wanted them to do something similar with classic vanilla. I do think they will take the simpler route and bring cata classic but what you’re suggesting isn’t bad at all.

Its an interesting thought and probably something that can be done but not by Blizzard in any way

Well you never know, this reminds me of the big wall of NO of a classic relaunch and look where we are at today, CLassic servers on blizz.
Cata is a failure and history will repeat itself if they launch it. Why go past the most successful product of all time and go to a product in retail that started to fail in CATA and beyond.
It will fail why? Just look at the private servers, all are 99% classic servers up to wrath. If blizz makes this mistake again it will fail and people will go back to the private servers in droves.

The community never said no. Blizzard said. Here I’m telling you that Blizzard is incapable of creating new content. That is different.

Not really, no. It was a very popular expansion at that time. If it was an actual failure, retail would not exist as of today, same as Wow in general. Do you think Blizzard just spawned those almost 10m players out of nowhere?

History didn’t repeat itself tho. The once unstoppable expansion king is in shambles atm because people see the blatant issues with wrath: it is pure raidlogging with a levelling that takes ages and is boring.

It will fail because Blizzard is uncapable of doing Wrath content. They took 6 months to restrict resing in Era. That being said, I’m not talking bad on Blizzard or anything, their Classic Team is just way too small to do such a task.

Private server data is a meme

Not sure where you got that number from but there are good TBC, Cata and MoP ones. Legion hype is also very real atm, just not a good one is being provided currently. Wrath just tends to be the easiest and well-scripted server out there and everyone and their mom can turn one on.

That will happen regardless and it already did to some extend.

Also don’t get me wrong. They can try to do Era servers (which I think is going to be a complete failure) but asking them to do actual content is out of their scope.

Cata had 9 million subs when it ended. To call it a failure is ridiculous.

What’s even more ridiculous is thinking 2023 Blizzard wouldn’t create a complete dumpster fire with Classic+ or Wrath 2, or whatever you want to call it. This is not a good company. These are not good developers. They know how to milk whales. They’ve got that down. But that’s it.

Three things:
#1: Cata didn’t fail. It was quite successful.
#2: Wrath isn’t the most successful product of all time. the only expansion that didn’t beat Wrath in terms of sale the day of release was MoP. Literally every expansion after Wrath (Cata & Shadowlands included) have beaten Wrath in terms of sales. Granted, this can be moreso a sign of more people playing WoW over the years in comparsion to the early years of WoW but still.
Edit: Though, I will say if you’re looking at peak subscribers, then Wrath is the most successful expansion based on released data but it’s hard to know for sure since Blizzard stopped releasing info about how many subs are active back in 2015.
#3: The only “bad” feature from Cata that failed hard (and still is failing hard) is LFR which is completely fair. Whenever I’ve asked anyone what they disliked about Cata, it’s almost always LFR or the long Dragon Soul patch cycle .

Side note: It’s kinda funny to me that people hate on the long patch cycle of Dragon Soul when Wrath also had a really long patch cycle from ICC to Cata with only Ruby Sanctum being released in between.

let’s be honest , people think we all liked wotlk that much that we need this. we didn’t . I prefer to do this with TBC

Retail is a failure compared to the classic era. They had to implement CRZ, they stop showing their sub numbers because they were loosing more and more subs with each expac, bringing classic back proves how retail is a failure.
I guarantee you that if retail was a success Blizz would still have the wall of NO up but because it’s a failure they brought it back.
Also blizzard was looking at the private server community and met with Nostralia a private server on bringing classic back, this is how they decide to bring it back. They look at the private server data numbers.

Cata was a failure. The Sub numbers dropped drastically starting then. Everyone from classic tried Cata the next xpac is why it sold good. But look at the sub numbers.
But your always going to get the I will kiss blizz butt no matter how bad retail is.
Face it, bringing back classic proves that Retail is a failure and bringing back Metz too proves that.
Dragonflight LMAO! Shadowlands was a hyped machine but a failure too.

It failed you, it wasn’t a failure.

That doesn’t even make sense

Adding cataclysm goes against the very reason for having a classic server. Its mostly viewed as the expansion that ruined the game as it is the one that made it impossible to actually play the game from start to finish.

They had used the great idea of phasing perfectly in Wrath and the choice of altering the landscape the way they did with Cataclysm was one of their worst choices ever, it should have be phased changes.

No just let us enjoy icc we already have dungeons in heroic, alpha, beta, and soon gamna.
Vanilla might have good raids and might gain from re-balancing like using tbc talents to make some specs viable, as well as adding cut content. Tbc might benefit from maybe some harder dungeons post swp and having two lockouts for pre-nerf raids as many did miss out on them.

Previous wrath when retail was wrath the dungeons became badge givers you ran though.

Not exactly. Wrath didn’t have the peak subscribers… despite what people like to think. Wrath had the most stable subscribers though at 11.5 million reported.

The Cataclysm prepatch brought the subscribers to its peak at 12 million reported, and that maintained for roughly six months.

why exactly is LFR bad though? because it lets people see the raid content without joining a guild? that’s what PUGs do. is it cause it’s “story” mode? why does it matter that someone else ran the content on an easier difficulty, do you get mad when someone kills LK on 10N even though you kill it on 25H every week?

I mean this could happen, I guess it just depends on how those who got the cata survey answered.

I feel like you’re projecting alot here.

I never said LFR is bad, that’s why the word bad is in quotes there. I said it failed hard and still is failing hard, and the reasoning behind that is because it’s a chore for people to slog through to see the story.
