It’s nice to see someone who doesn’t mainly tank understand the experience so perfectly. Try telling someone in a WoW dungeon to wait for literally 10 seconds to let your defensive CD finish. You can get voted out unanimously for that.
I honestly used to howl myself hoarse about the utterly dismal experience that random dungeon groups in WoW has become; the only way to stop being miserable about it was to stop queuing at all.
Oh, you want to get into tanking? Get ready for the DPS to ignore everything you say, pull before you can, get killed before you or the healer can save them and then blame you for it. Then they blame you for going too slowly even though they’re the ones who died. Then they get mad when you wait for the healer’s mana. Then they kick you when you throw your hands up and start ignoring them.
Oh but healing is no better, really. Even when you get a decent tank who’s willing to let you mana up, and willing to stay in range of you? DPS won’t let him. And if they do, they’re chain pulling until half the instance is aggro’d and you go OOM trying to keep everyone up. Then it’s your fault for the wipe. And god help you if you manage to get not only the typical toxic DPS, but a tank who’s having a bad day and decides you’re going to suffer as much as he is.
No, see, my favorite thing as a DPS–whether I was on a rogue or a mage–was CC. To CC anything that needed it. Loose mob beating on the healer? I’m on it. Loose healing mob keeping a pack alive? He’s sheeped. Huge scary mob that has to be controlled or the pull can’t be finished? Consider him controlled.
… And then Cataclysm came along and destroyed that. I had learned my role in a period where CC was not only more common and accepted, but vital to any dungeon. WLK’s era softened this noticeably, and when Cataclysm circled back around to requiring CC? Suddenly I was getting screeched at for CCing anything. I could spend all night telling you my exciting stories from Vortex Pinnacle and Halls of Origination! Of attempting to sheep or sap certain ridiculous mobs–the ones who spam heal, the ones who pulse lethal AOE–and throwing people into conniptions.
I’ve had other DPS turn and immediately smack something I just shepped or ice trapped or whatever, and then resume fighting what they were already targeting. I had a tank become so angry and offended that I sapped one of those two big AoE mobs in HOO that he broke it immediately (“only noobs use CC” no. really. he said that. someone else said it to me in another run, too, when I shackled a mob that was pummeling the healer). So this tank arrogantly broke my sap… and we wiped in seconds. He ragequit.
Yeah I’m a salty, salty Sandra about the subject. Even to this day.
So like, honestly? The common ailment here is a gradual rise in impatient, self-entitled behavior which has always been a problem but really swung into high gear with the advent of LFD. Suddenly it became possible to make the lives of tanks, healers, and CC-using DPS a living hell and face no repercussions.
It’s just another set of reasons why I hit the road, I suppose. But I do think LFD as a concept did a lot of irreparable harm, at least as much good as it might have done.
Literally JUST got out of Shrine of the Storm, and there was a ret paladin who kept pulling, and then running away from me in a panic when he would get more than he could handle. And then yell at me for not taunting. I tried explaining that my taunt has a range and a CD, and him running away from me, USING SPEED BUFFS just ensured I’d be too far away to do anything.
His response “Or you could just learn to tank”.
Yeah man that’s just wild. Maybe I’m showing my age, here, but I remember when one of the most essential core rules of being DPS was if you get aggro, run to the tank immediately and stop DPSing so they can grab it back. Seeing that gradually vanish to the point that next to nobody even does it anymore is surreal to me.
Really, it’s the absolute lack of self-awareness coupled with a belligerent refusal to accept responsibility for working with mechanics. I was in a Vortex Pinnacle once with this tank that would not pull any mobs out of the pyramidal fields that negate casts against them. All of our DPS were casters. So we were in that run for 45 minutes, minimum, because he was preventing us from actually DPSing. We first asked him, then pleaded with him, then sternly told him to move the mobs out of the blue because we couldn’t damage them.
This windowlicker came back with “no you need to learn to DPS.”
It became his constant reply. We were almost outright yelling at him to move them, MOVE THEM OUT OF THE FRIGGING BLUE, THEY DON’T TAKE DAMAGE–
[Tank]: lol u need to f#$@ing lrn 2 play
Like, no, you cannot argue with mechanics that will not let us DPS him, MOVE HIM OUT
He wouldn’t. I have no idea how we finished that run but it was one of the worst I’d ever seen and it helped underline for me that basic courtesy and teamwork had very much gone the way of the dodo.
Tanking has never even crossed my mind but I’ve healed before and found it (mostly) enjoyable. Leaps and bounds more engaging than DPS, and while tanks would sometimes run ahead and nearly get themselves killed Heirlooms usually meant that they lived long enough to get a heal. Haven’t tried since they re-balanced the leveling experience.
EDIT: And unlike tanks healers hold everyone’s life in the palm of their hand. I’ve certainly let DPS die for pulling mobs at every turn.
I despaired of ever controlling a run as a healer. Full-time healers always told me “don’t worry, just let DPS die if they pull, they’ll fall in line”
Every time I did that, I’d get vote kicked, without fail.
Mileage and varying and what not.
All intents and purposes… It’s not particularly fun either way.
I think I got away with it because by the time it annoyed me it probably annoyed the tank as well. I’m also really lucky when it comes to not running into jerks. Worked at a grocery store for 2 and a half years and I’ve only had someone be rude to me once.

lol, you missed another one a few posts up SLACKER
You guys ever have that class where one kid was super rude to the teacher and everyone went quiet and watched?
Someone embed “Hot for Teacher” for me here.
Gimme something to write on, man.
I don’t feel tardy.

Why is this even an option??
Gonna e-mail tag Bill from Accounting in on this, hoo boy he’ll sure get a chortle out of this doozy.
Then I have bad news for you.
In this case, I wouldn’t understand it anyway.
Hmm, this is weird. Some of my characters are displaying only as the WoW logo, at least on my end. And they all seem to be from my main account? Well on the note of that invite thing that’s …unique. Huh.
Ariiah is displaying as the WoW logo on my screen at the moment, too. I’ve never been sure why that happens sometimes.
My sub is running out anyway. May as well poke the bear some more, if calling out and insulting Kotick with demeaning pictures of himself hasn’t gotten me yelled at yet.
Well at least I know I’m not the only one seeing this. It’s very odd but I’m sure it’ll pass, sooner or later.
