Wot in an Oppressed Nation

I do love a good healthy dose of irony and complete lack of self-awareness.

Hey, I’m so sorry you’re going through this right now. Beyond boosting your tweet, is there anyway we can help you?

I’ll gift you a copy if you’d like.

You know, something I really appreciate is how FFXIV handles your Character’s growing fame. The game does a great job of building it up is a way that doesn’t feel out of the blue.

I’ve been enjoying it alot.

Like Cesare, I’d also like to do whatever I can to help. As would I think many people.

It’s not right what they’ve done to you. I was a union rep for years, and I know management is good at making you feel like stuff is your fault. Don’t buy it. They done ya wrong here, flat out, 100%. If you need anything, tell us. I’m sure as hell not letting someone get deported over IRL Gallywix- I mean Kotick’s greed mongering.

Edit: WrA loves events and hates Kotick. Maybe we could do an event? Like a meta, RP but not really event sort of thing? Sounds fun to me.

Wait what did I miss?

Hehexd lost his work visa because Kotick is literal human cancer.

Cesare wanted to help and I agree, it would be cool if we could.

Yeah if there’s anything I can do.

I actually saw someone I follow on tumblr saying something to the effect of “this isn’t a WoW thing, it’s a corporation thing and it’s not worth getting mad about.”

… and it absolutely chapped my rear end. Like, yes, they tempered this observation with “the only meaningful change we can make is fighting to change the laws that allow this to happen” but it’s like… we can be still mad in the moment that people like Hehexd have had their future thrown in the garbage the literal same day their own company announces record profits.

“Guys this isn’t a WoW thing, it’s just a deeply seated problem in our socioeconomic workings as a society.”

OH IS THAT ALL?! WELL DONT I FEEL LIKE A DRAMA QUEEN.

I have legit seen people rolling their eyes and going “geez why are people being so dramatic and quitting over this” as if it doesn’t matter at all.

“Guys stop whining, all corporations treat their workers like disposable tools.”

Yeah “this happens everywhere, all the time” being a reason not to be upset about a terrible thing is literal insanity.

It’s the bystander syndrome basically. If it doesn’t happen to them, then in their eyes, it’s trivial. Until it does happen and they’re forced to eat their words because, predictably, life doesn’t care what they think or say.

If I’m being brutally honest, it wasn’t the sole reason I finally unplugged myself. Oh, it was a major reason, but it wasn’t the only reason.

I also left because I was just burnt out on a game that, for all the bells and whistles its creators announce each year, has been fundamentally unchanged for most of its span (though this can also be blamed on the age of its core frame, and the fact that an MMO is an MMO is an MMO at the end of the day). Burnt out on a game whose creators consistently refuse to bring it forward to the same level of quality we see in other MMOs.

I was tired of trying to rekindle my interest in a war story that has become so rotten and ridiculous that I can no longer do the creative gymnastics needed to justify being part of it even in some oddly removed tangential sense. I was burnt out on trying and failing to re-establish some sense of momentum and character growth in the wake of old friends disappearing or moving on, and other friendships ending.

In essence, my connection and commitment to the game began to decay and die of old age and repeated disappointment. I have to be honest and own that. My love for my own characters and their stories remains, and is something I will carry forward however I can, but I don’t need to pay for a half-broken and frustrating gaming experience to do that.

Now… the mass-layoff? That was one of the final straws. I have been dimly aware of Blizzard’s increasingly infuriating practices for years but I never allowed myself to make it enough of a motivating factor to deny them my coin.

Maybe I lingered because I have an old friend who works for the company, maybe out of loyalty to fond memories. But neither of those old bonds are enough for me to keep ignoring that Activision-Blizzard is a vile company. And the sad thing is? This isn’t even the first time they’ve done this nonsense. I found out that years ago, like in 2012? They fired hundreds of their own full time employees and then re-hired them as temps with less pay, no benefits, and no protection. I was shocked that I didn’t notice. Why didn’t I notice?

Well, I’ve noticed, now. And that’s the second of two last straws that broke this camel’s back.

I have an uncle I no longer speak to. He’s upper management at a store chain. Now I don’t wanna get into specifics so I’ll just make up a name for this corporation, let’s call it HOME DEPOT.

Anyway he’s upper management, and years back there was this thing going on during the recession where people were being fired from jobs of all types, in many businesses, without it really being necessary, but management was claiming it was due to the recession. The people being fired we’re hiring lawyers to sue for bigger severance and benefits. Well my uncle had a lot to say about that. “Nobody’s entitled to a job, and if they want to give handouts they can start their own business and see how long it lasts”, and other garbage of that nature. He said that they shouldn’t be able to even try those cases, because they’re bull.

Well a month or so later, my uncle gets an email. OOPS YOU’RE GETTING LAID OFF SORRY. First thing he does? Hires a lawyer. I called him out on it. He said he had to take care of his family. That was the last day I spoke to him.

People like Kotick and my scumbag uncle don’t care about families or people until they’re the ones on the chopping block.

I wish I enjoyed any MMO as much as WoW tbh. I’ve trieds FFXIV multiple times and it ain’t for me.

It’s so buck wild how dumb this capitalist b/s is too like… nobody (ok, sans a few maladjusted people) wakes up wanting 2 hate Blizzard and their games. Most people grew up on some variety of Blizzard product, they want it to be good and they want to enjoy it! But Activision-Blizzard are literally Hell-bent on punching themselves repeatedly in the moneybags while begging us to stay subscribed & performing comical levels of corporate depravity.

I literally just want to raid, do some RP, do some PVP and not have to spend my entire life wasting away just to barely keep up. I just want the writers to talk to each other when they’re making wild characterization or worldbuilding changes so Sylvanas is not like, a terrible tyrant who doesn’t let the forsaken have free will but is also totally okay with the Forsaken having free will but is actually compassionate in her own way and geuinely cares about the Horde & just has a perspective that’s at odds with Horde Values™ because She Done Died BUT ACTUALLY no she’s a complete nutjob with no sense of empathy whatsoever

Like holy goddang I just want to enjoy your dumb product but in true capitalist fashion making literal record earnings isn’t enough & it’s definitely a SUPER GOOD IDEA to further alienate your audiences in pursuit of profit, because that has never ever led to a massive downfall for any corporation ever you absolute bonobos

This sounds a lot like my situation as well. I was already unsubbed when this news hit so it was more of a “yeah this is the right choice” kinda thing.

BfA has completely eroded any desire I have to continue playing WoW and Blizzard’s varying responses to how bad this expansion is on every single level possible have been complete and total denial.

Honestly I think Blizzard has run out of tricks and is clearly not interested in trying anything new.
