World PVP was a failed experiment in MMOs

Seriously, every MMO with open world PVP either does it in the context of a curated area (ESO’s cryodill) and/or is completely optional requiring to be flagged up (BFA War Mode, New World)

Why is this? Because forced flagging is bad game design and only causes player unhappiness and toxicity, but the marketing pitch “oh the true servers were you have to take risk” is cool in theory but being corpsecamped by Johnny McGuildOfficer because you took his node or he just doesn’t like you.

MMOs over the years have almost completely phased out forced world pvp because it is just an avenue for toxic players and guilds to virtually harass other players and prevent them from enjoying the game.

However you may correctly say that surely that’s what people signed up for picking PVP server. For the intended niche it has a massive and obvious gaping problem which killed wpvp even for people who enjoyed it - lack of enforced faction balance, ease of server transfers, and the server xfer waves (esp free ones) causing a domino effect on other pvp servers by making them unbalanced (See: Benediction,Whitemane, etc)

World PVP in Classic was always unstable DOA system from the start, TBC’s smaller world and lack of sanct zones + summoning stone dungeons only sped the collapse up.

World PVP is a risky system that requires Dev management + multiple safeguards for faction balance, while a “war mode” system requires almost no upkeep in comparison. Blizzard tried to include the system as authenticity but neglected to support/modernize it for modern MMO 2019 community.

Blizz tried to have it both ways and perhaps with xfer money they made a quick buck, but all that’s assured is the players lost.

Eve online.

A fellow MMO from a bygone age

sigh.

Mortal Online 2.

Needed to add warmode.

Shard all war mode players together.

You replied really fast so you may not of read my thread, but I have not made any claim that world pvp should not exist or can’t be done. It requires dev maintenance and safeguards to put into place, and that’s why modern MMOs mostly don’t bother.

Also, Mortal Online 2 is basically a graphically overhauled mortal online 1 (2010) and both are in a very small niche and lack mainstream popularity in the MMO space.

your original post is not asking any meaningful question, nor offering any meaningful solution to any defined problem.

it’s just stating what you were thinking while your hand was hovering over the keyboard. it’s just ranting.

i interacted with it by providing a counterexample. I’m not sure how else one can interact with such a post. could you indicate what sort of reply you were looking for?

I mean one look at server populations will tell you that wpvp per server is definitely no longer a thing, so I get where you are coming from.
Warmode with sharding might be a good idea at this point.

Meanwhile on your thread from a month ago:

Merge Benediction, PvP servers are an oxymoron - WoW Classic / Burning Crusade Classic Discussion - World of Warcraft Forums (blizzard.com)

This reminds me of the duel spec threads saying the opposite thing.

This is one of the topics that I care about, but I don’t plan to respond to this thread anymore. There are a few active topics about this exact thing and SURPRISE, a new LF topic on the same thing pops up instead of responses on those threads.

Posts don’t have to be solely utilitarian and you know that, don’t be silly. This thread is a reflection on why wpvp failed and why it isn’t common in today’s MMOs. You would already know this if you read it, though you replied in under a minute which means you probably didn’t.

Your counterexamples while interesting are trying to counter an argument I didn’t make.

At least use alt chars to spam like the other spammers do

here is a 3-way litmus test:

85: nobody likes WPVP

95: people like WPVP but only if they have a significant advantage

105: the developers have a responsibility to foster a sense of competition by maintaining population balance

I like world pvp, and those threads aren’t saying the opposite of one another. You would know that if you had read them, but it seems like all you read is if the poster’s name, if it says Lemonfont or not.

I can like world pvp and while also saying blizzard’s laissez-faire approach to classic world pvp was a failure, and also say that world pvp isn’t for everyone and there are plenty of good reasons for that.

I don’t know why you double down on the silly idea that only one person can create a thread about dual spec/pvp/etc at any time. This is my unique insight and reasons, and while similar threads exist, they are not same whatsoever.

so what are you saying? that pvp should be reinforced or that pvp should be deleted? i still dont understand the main post message.

Your original post was 289 words.

Less than 15 seconds worth of reading time for me.

World PVP (as it is is not for everyone and cannot work in the long run without dev changes and oversight such as faction balance caps on xferring and additional sanct zones to deter egregious griefing.

Of course there are tons of different ways to balance wpvp and prevent 1-faction servers and constant camping, however Blizzard chose to do nothing and it shows.

I’m happy for you.

Did it take you longer to read those 289 words or count them?

I’ll leave that as an exercise for the student.

Dang you got students too?
