Not really, no. But it’s had better themes and plots than what we have now. WOTLK is one people enjoyed. TBC had a popular story. Legion was another. Is it great writing? Nah, never was. Was it Saturday Morning Cartoon fun? Sure. But now it’s not even that. Now it’s just boring.
The perennial poop quests.
Honestly, I appreciate this expansion for what it is: a Pallet cleanser.
We had like 3 back to back expansions that were about saving the soul of azeroth from some all powerful goober with a bazzilion systems (many of which weren’t even supported between patches) and mission boards oh the mission boards.
This expansion? With it’s focus on player choice, exploration, a revamped crafting system and just… fun is so god damn refreshing.
Now do I think every expansion going forward should be like this? Of course not. But if we’re going to talk about needing dark in order to create contrast then it’s important to remember that without light all you wind up with is murk.
Speechless
True, although I personally believe that doing contrasts by expansion is not a good idea, 2 years of light or 2 years of darkness is a lot, there should be some type of balance within each expansion.
Balance, you say? Something like a… high dynamic range of tones?
(Ha, managed to work in an HDR reference)
I have to agree, the rl world is dark enough I just wish to escape for a moment of this chaotic world to one less ,the stories may not make sense but they are stories I can relate to that some do.
When WoW became popular it was by far the least dark and least gritty game around; the only things less dark and gritty were games like Toontown Online. I remember seeing WoW and thinking it didn’t look very appealing compared to most games, because it looked like a cartoon and most games at least tried to look real-ish (but obviously failed)
I mean, I agree, It’s just that we had like… 2 expansions back to back that were extremely dark and 3 that were expressly U SAVE WURLD FROM BAD MAN OR DOOOOOOOOOOM!!1!"
Having an expansion that has lower stakes and is often more introspective to me is ironically probably the closest to vanilla the game has been in a long, long time.
But like I said: going forward I would want more then this. Writing that knows how to contrast light and dark in a way that allows for depth as opposed to incredibly shallow binary states.
The WC3 story was considered by most people to be quite good. I agree that the WoW story has always been watered down in comparison and not particularly great, other than some scattered moments here and there. But it generally kept with the underlying theme of the world, until recently.
Yup. While DF was a better story than SL, it still wasn’t a very good one. At least, not the way it was told.
And Dom Torretto’s Kalecgo’s family comment only made me laugh at what was supposed to be a fairly serious moment.
It was too cheesy, all of it, not just the “family” line.
It had good moments, I liked the back and forth between Sab and Wrathion most of the time and Syndragosa was well written. But most of all, it was a very lame story, and that was the fault of story telling, not the fault of being too light or not dark enough.
I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder. Personally I think BFA was dark. Sylvanis was killing people simply for the sake of killing people, The maw, and Revendreth struck me as pretty dark as well. Though there are those who believe that dark should me more like the game scorn. Scooping shell people and smashing… things…
“Mean while somewhere in the blasted lands…” GALLIWYX! You’re late!.. LMAO
Be speechless then lol.
Personally, I hate children, so I don’t care if they die in media.
We need an expansion where we lose the fight.
Are you that dark? When clouds of death come creeping in .Would you wish it when you’re the victim of it’s grasp. Even in the game as this is it can effect others when it gets too dark.
Yeah of course, it’s make believe game, all fantasy, all pixelized ,but matters is it presentation.
It would be nice for a change, and the World Soul Saga could be a good time for that, but I don’t know if they would dare to make the players feel defeated.
Well some areas have the storms and it gets really dark. Those are the times I wish my dragon carried a lantern in his mouth or around its neck, that would be crazy cool. Is that dark enough for you
I do believe in the end we all lose, there is nothing.
A true hero doesn’t win them all, and it’s a loss that makes a warrior even stronger.
Maybe someday.
