Considering how upset you are about this suggestion, you probably leave every group as soon as something doesn’t go the way you want or expect it to…
As opposed to the current abuse happening - people leaving with no penalty and bricking others keys? This isn’t a problem for you? (Maybe you don’t have to run your own keys?)
You might then say “play with friends to avoid this happening,” but I could also say the same to you - play with friends to avoid being held hostage in horrible groups.
Your “friends” logic works both ways, both in favor of your argument and OP’s argument. It isn’t the winning rebuttal you think it is.
If 3/5 or even 4/5 people don’t want to quit the key. And you are the 1 person who does want to quit. You can still leave. No one is stopping you from leaving.
If 4/5 people want the dungeon to continue and 1 doesn’t. A 15-30 minute penalty is better than being “held hostage” for 15-30 min right?
So then would you rather stay and finish the key or sit alone with a deserter buff? Maybe it would encourage people to just finish the key.
The current system has wildly more ways to abuse than any proposed solution. You can quite literally join groups, plug the key, and leave. Effectively trolling 4 people, with 0 downsides. And the best part, if they 4 man the dungeon without you, you still get credit.
I mean, I don’t play to the +20 and mythic raid level. But everytime I see a post like this they are more or less the same. I have gotten KSM and AOTC in nothing but pugs and play the level of content I am comfortable with, Have for years. and have yet to experience issues that these people bring up.
3 people that are friends/guildmates make a group and bring you and another random person via the group finder as a pug.
Run goes/is going horrible for whatever reason(s).
You and the other pug want/vote to call it quits, but those 3 people are hellbent on slogging through it because it’s their key and they are the majority
You now have the choice of being held hostage or getting punished for being a leaver
scenario 2
you make a group but need to pug one or two
You have some bad pulls, resulting in wipes
one or both of the pugs throw a fit along the lines of “i’m not carrying a group of bads” and vote to surrender
your group of people dont feel like it is that big a deal (sometimes things happen) and want to press on
they refuse, so elect to sit and pout at the entrance until you elect to vote to surrender so they can avoid the penalty of leaving
good system
ACTUAL solution to the “problem” of pugging
After you run with people via the group finder, instead of just instantly leaving group and hearthing out, let people know you enjoyed running with them for whatever reason(s). Add them to your friends list. Over time, you will eventually end up with a lot of people on your list you could potentially run keys with. So much so that you wouldn’t really even have to pug!
Find a guild whose content focus is m+. I imagine that, like raiding or pvp guilds, there is a wide array of them in terms of skill/ability. There is one for you somewhere.
Join a in game M+ community. I imagine that, like raiding or pvp guilds, there is a wide array of them in terms of skill/ability. There is one for you somewhere.

Part of the issue is the perception of m+ gameplay.
Is m+ casual or ranked/rated content?
If m+ is casual content, then yeah it shouldn’t really have penalties or punishments involved with it.
If m+ is ranked/rated content, then yes it should have punishments for people who leave.
Imagine any other team based game with ranked/rated content. Do they have punishments for people who leave and put their team at a disadvantage?
When you Que for rated/ranked content, you are agreeing to stay until the end. Now Ofcourse with m+ even though it has a timer, one could go over the timer. So in theory people are saying they don’t want to be “trapped” in a dungeon for 4+ hours. (Obviously)
One’s obligation should only be to stay for the timer. Anything over the timer shouldn’t be punished.
It’s kinda funny seeing this “make it yourself” attitude permeate into the PvE community after watching the same thing happen to the RP community for years. Don’t like the RP on offer? Make your own guild. Walk up to people yourself.
Ya know where that lead? Nowhere. RP servers are on their last legs now.
Sorry fam, m+ isn’t a very “new player” friendly environment… but in all fairness, not much of this game is, and I don’t think Blizz has any plans to change it. They only know how to cater to their current audience of toxic grumblebutts huffing on copium in a deep pit of denial.
I’m literally on an alt that is barely over 400 and have been doing keys gearing just fine. The 10-20 minute wait is kinda true since you are queuing against tons and tons of other DPS. As for leavers, if that is a constant problem in your groups then you need to either look at what you are doing and/or vet who you invite or queue a lot better.
Yeah idk. If you are signing up to groups it could take a long time especially as dps. Making a group though RARELY takes longer than 5-10 minutes tops. List the group, go get a drink or go bio and come back to 30 dps applicants to sift through with maybe some tanks/healers if you are lucky.
What? Low keys aren’t ran because there is no reason to do them and it is practically impossible to stay there. My 305 IL garbage characters end up with 11 keys in 2 hours because you have to TRY not to go 2->5->8->10/11.
Except role playing is completely different than a defined game mode like mythic+. And yes making your own group does work. In fact for new damage it’s the best way to do it. The only struggle will be Figure it out how to set up a good group.
There are websites for that. Yes this game requires more third party assistance than any game i’ve ever played. That is a fair critique.
Except this is proven every season to not work. Look at this season and the absurd amount of FH/UR compared to something like HoI. You know what happens if I roll a 21 HoI? I do a 21+ UR instead and reroll my key at the end.
What? Literally everyone. If you think groups don’t consistently triple pull the start of FH or grab like 3-4 packs at the start of NL in most PUGs and pop lust idk what to tell you.
Neltharus is literally made to MDI pull into the chains right now.
Does that mean the game isn’t massively multiplayer then?
Very weird to come out and try to say it like it’s the guild where that happens. Apparently no where else, lol.
It actually doesn’t, you don’t need a group to level or do plenty of other content. In fact during leveling and a lot of world content you almost never see other players. So is it not an MMORPG or is it?
Is it, though? It’s still content. You’re still working cooperatively with other players to accomplish a goal. There are still various levels of writing skill and personalities that may or may not mesh. The only difference is that there is no tangible reward for roleplaying, and that’s hardly enough of a difference to say “they ain’t the same”.
