Windwalker is Looking Incredibly Doomed for 10.2

I think one of the biggest problem monk faces is not only are their damage numbers just consistently very poor despite demon hunters carrying a stronger raid buff and consistently having good damage compared to monks 80% of raid tiers, its the core gameplay being virtually the same for almost a decade at this point when every monk player whos played monk pre-legion knows it was a downgrade in fun/interactiveness, really just leaves a sour taste in the mouth having nothing ever being changed other than (SMALL) numbers every couple months and then they’re still bottom 4 dps class by a large margin, and more than half of the talent tree being dead talents, and not much exciting things being in the class tree for us either.

The start of the expansion lead us to believe the initial talent tree was placeholdery and showed promise and would be expanded upon like many other classes got, but it never was and instead we were left with talents that just feel like blatant placeholders for the entire expansion, and that whole era of touch of death being a main source of damage was probably one of the least fun times I had playing this class after its playing with it for more than a week, nobody likes touch of death playstyles, its weak, its niche, its fundamentally flawed in so many ways and the ability itself is a buggy mess that doesn’t even work sometimes

We all know that monk will not get a rework this expansion, but from the community to the devs, we would like to see monk go back to its roots in mop-wod, the low playerbase of wind walker is not because people don’t like monk, its because monk is consistently bad and feels bad to play and everyone knows it and echo’s that leaving people wary of even touching the spec, any time it has been doing above average the spec was swiftly nerfed aswell, my theory is because it is already not a very popular spec and everyone knows when unpopular specs are strong blizzard nerfs them really fast and buffs the popular ones to keep the majority playerbase engaged, my point being the specs that are unpopular are unpopular due to this exact design philosophy, nobody cares about being a battle hardened warrior anymore its not 2006, they care about being strong in the game and if you design your game with that in mind you will see balance across the popularity of specs

Tl;dr rework monk next expansion and start with abolishing this fundamentally flawed design of combo strikes rotation, if you aren’t going to make more than 2 abilitys that are exciting to press with a combo rotation then you had a perfectly functioning and fun idea with warlords of dreanor and mop design monk that was still completely unique, listen to this communitys ideas they know what they want from the spec, listening is better than just throwing a bunch of old stuff into the talent tree and calling it a day like we did with this expansion

Not to be mean but the person in charge of windwalker has absolutely 0 clue what they are doing. That is a statement of fact, not opinion.

This change is irrelevant. It still leaves the 4pc as a laughable bonus. It still leaves ST damage laughably low. It still leaves AoE damage laughably low.

WW is the worst DPS spec in the game by far and many other specs were buffed more heavily in this tuning!

This is completely unacceptable. I NEVER doom in wow. I have put up with so much of these changes this season and I have mained WW since legion, this is the WORST i have ever felt playing the class. If ANY dev is reading this, PLEASE i am begging you to just do SOMETHING, because whatever you are doing is NOT working. On behalf of the entire WW community we need something. Behind the bugs, the OP trinkets that shadow our playstyle, there is something fundamentally wrong with this spec. Please help. Help me Ion, you’re my only hope.

The author of this thread is the 10.1 rank #1 parsing windwalker monk. If the rank 1 windwalker is getting benched due to bad damage, then you know it’s a failure from the class design and tuning team. I just cannot comprehend why the devs are being forced to work on the “favoritism specs” (warlock, hunter, mage) instead of putting windwalker’s needs higher on the AGILE board for their sprint backlog. 10.2 without any changes is going to be the lowest low windwalker has ever had, and this spec has had many lows.

WINDWALKERS, IT’S TIME TO GET LOUD. DO WHAT WARLOCKS AND MAGES DO AND COMPLAIN AND MAKE AN ANNOYANCE SO THEY ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING.

Maximum put it perfectly “Windwalker needs God”.

Replying again to bump. Absolutely laughable tuning to an already bad tier set and that’s been voiced constantly since announced.

You aren’t listening to feedback from us.

I held onto hope that windwalker would see some significant changes. I almost wish I had given up playing it sooner now. I’ve pushed as ww in m+ to title every season since it came out. I’m done now.

Better monks than me have sent extremely productive and important feedback that fell on deaf ears. I hope blizzard gets the message sometime soon. Another ww signing off and not returning…until changes come.

If I can contribute anything to the discussion, blizzard please fix the tree. Also, FLS is extremely unfun and this new tier buff is a joke; it doesn’t even begin to address the things wrong with the spec–let alone the damage portion. DO BETTER BLIZZARD!!!

Blizzard, please rework windwalker. 6 total monk talents to ToD to which you don’t play a single one in raid ST build. A maintenance buff that gets griefed by any sort of boss movement. The list goes on. Lets just try something different.

I have stayed silent about my discontent with the state of Windwalker Monks after how the many prominent voices in the community were being ignored. The lack of concern from Blizzard with the current state going into the next tier is disheartening. We have one of the smallest playerbases but we make up for it with some truly passionate members that set us apart.

Every expansion the scaling for the spec is one of the primary issues and yet it is never dealt with. Now it is rearing its head again and no amount of buffs to the tier set bonuses will cover for it. The least Blizzard could do is listen to their players about this and not roll their eyes for once.

I may not personally play at the top echelon of content in the game, but I have played monk since my first opportunity in MOP Beta and love the class dearly. I come from one of the oldest guilds on my server and have played WoW since the Vanilla Beta. Prior to MOP my main was a Warlock and no matter what I’ve always stuck with a class through its ups and downs.

It is unfathomable that Blizzard is so dead set on leaving Windwalker as is despite overwhelming requests for a major talent overhaul or at the very least proper tuning.

Is it too soon for me to get salty again?

I’ve tried really hard this expansion not to be my normal competitive self. But I feel like I need to start speaking up because this is just dumb.

Why does WW always have to get poop’d on? Why can’t we have our tier to dominate? Let us go super sayien and have the highest melee dps to match!

Seriously, we are no longer aoe kings Combat Rogues took that by miles, DH’s even out aoe us now on sims, boomies out uncapped aoe us, and even a well played enhance shammy can out aoe us now. We have never been a top tier Single target spec. So what do we have?

I’ve joked about Windwalker not having a dev for a while now, but sadly it seems true. The amount of effort this spec has received has been bare minimum (look at any other class during this patch and the number of balance changes that have taken place). It’s abysmal. As others have mentioned the class is horrible to play. I would list the issues but it would be pointless.

I can’t keep playing a spec that is largely ignored and not even acknowledged by anyone at Blizzard. I don’t post at all on forums, but after years of frustration playing this class on and off I’m officially done. My love for monk will never end but for now it’s goodbye…

honestly i doubt they are gonna do something with ww, since they must be working on war withing, blizz said that they reorganized the teams to be able to with on worldsoul saga, and my only guess is that nobody cares about a spec that only a few hundred people plays

Seeing as this is the last tier its very clear to the wind walker community for a very long time that whichever singular dev that works on wind walker in their off hours or is constantly taking vacations has 0 idea what they are doing with the spec, does not have a plan for the spec, does not play the spec, and doesn’t read any of the feedback or even BUGS for the spec.

You can see this reflected by the past two tiers in a row trying to make a tier set for ww tied to auto attacking when its been echo’d for a long time that wind walker auto attacks are BUGGED

You can see it reflected in the talent tree that has been untouched for so long when half of the talents are unusable or give virtually nothing

You can see it reflected in how long ww goes every expansion having a laughably poor performance before getting 1 impactful change

You can see it reflected by how many bugs there still are for the spec that have been bugs for years that have never even been mentioned by the devs

I’ve played ww since mop and have truly never been more bored and demoralized from playing the spec as I have been this expansion because it just never changes when its bad.

It’s not so much as our auto attacks are bugged it is just that in our rotation we don’t auto often.

FoF is a channel spell that is 4 seconds of no autos, spinning crane kick is a 2 sec channel with no autos. So if you’re playing correctly you factually don’t auto that often. We are not rogues who literally have to keep up slice n dice which makes them auto attack more than any other melee in game. We are not fury warriors who some how get to auto attack in rampage channel but we can’t in FoF…
*I just point that out because you can see design overlap between whoever this current dev team is and what combat rogue gets… But we are not combat rogues, we do not play like combat rogues. So whoever is on team rogue is just copy and pasting what they did there then calling it a WW set.

I am not knocking you we need everyone to say something at this point. I am just pointing out why with the way we are built from MoP alpha we have been made to not auto attack.

Wind walker auto attacks are factually not functioning like they should for a melee spec, every cast of spinning crane kick and fists of fury reset the swing timer of your auto attack. This is extremely noticeable with 2 handers in aoe, back in the day, wind walker had a passive that could circumvent the auto attack problem by procing a buff that sped up their swings for a few swings (increased proc rate with 2h), this doesn’t exist anymore

The reason you know this is not intended is because enhancement shaman had a similar interaction with casting certain spells resetting their auto swing timer which was fixed in shadowlands.

I don’t know about the reset swing timer, I can see that being an issue since the channel of FoF or SCK does pause all autos.

It honestly might also reset them. This would just further add to the fact we already do not auto attack like all the other melee classes do. It would kinda compound our issues. But I haven’t tested it and I honestly don’t really have time right now due to IRL to spend the hours needed it would take to get consistent footage of the auto being reset.

If we want the boks to be such a frequent occurrence just make them provide a stacking buff to wdp (or each spender?). Like “each buffed bok makes your next rsk/fof/wdp/strike/sck deal 10% more damage, stacks up to 5 times”

We do NOT need more CDR

I joined the game in BFA, started ww in Nyalotha and really enjoyed it. It’s always been a poorly tuned, buggy, neglected, red-headed step-child of a spec, and I really enjoyed it so much. That’s the kind of person that plays this spec, whether it’s a casual player who just enjoys the fantasy and kicks and things, or a person like OP who plays at the highest level possible and remains dedicated as a one trick. People play windwalker in spite of the state that it’s in, not as a result of it. This leads to concerns regarding whether its design is misguided or not, because often blue posts regarding windwalker contain text betraying a fundamental misunderstanding of windwalker’s mechanics, design goals which directly contradict the development team’s explicitly stated design philosophy, and changes which do not seem to be made with any regard to community feedback.

The community as a whole doesn’t primarily desire buffs (that’s arguably the second thing we want right now, though), but rather to be addressed and to feel like we have a seat at the table with the adults. It’s clear that there’s a large focus on telling us “we hear you, we hear your feedback,” but instead of providing us with such platitudes, we want to be asked “how can we make this game you pay for fun to play?” Just ask us, guys. The monk community has such brilliant minds, just constantly dreaming up interesting ways to make windwalker fun again, so it would be in your best interest to ask actively and work together with us to get this thing back on track before it gets even more ridiculous.

I’m just here to keep this thread going. I agree with a lot of what has been said and hopefully it gets some attention.

Trying to find the right words but it’s difficult - there’s so many people who feel like Windwalker is their class in WoW that it feels terrible that a lot of our core issues haven’t been addressed. Scaling issues, completely dead talents and now a tier set that is constantly needing buffs to be half as good as our last. We would like to be heard on some of these issues. (edited to fix my main character)
