Will this Samsung SSD work for what I need in SL?

you can move over as much or as little as you want. For me personally, I do clean install of everything (OS, apps, games, programs) and only carry over things like photos and documents.

You can also clone those things if you want. Sandisk / Western Digital, Crucial, and Samsung all have easy to use free cloning apps. Programs/Apps/OS launch quicker on a SSD compared to a HDD and feel “snappy”.

Or you can just run a few select programs on the SSD. Just don’t forget to format it once you install it.

…Wouldn’t that wipe it clean?

i’d use GPT either way tho assuming your system is UEFI

Lol thanks guys. Just so we’re clear, this has been horribly embarrassing to ask all these questions. it’s not lost on me that you didn’t have to be this helpful.

No need to feel embarrassment. Everyone here (including me) learns more every day by asking questions.

Hope it works out - and also I would consider looking at other forums as well for input. Reddit and Linus Tech Tips are good places to check.

Format the new SSD, not your old drive. You can skip the step with cloning software

Personally, I find too many “fan boys” there. I tend to post on TPU and occasionally on JG and SNB. For actual tech knowledge I like techreport and anandtech but you may wait a bit for a reply with their smaller community.
They tend to me more hardware fans rather then gamers who built a PC or two.

There’s some good advice and bad advice, as always with open forums you tend to get a bit of everything.

You should not be embarrassed! One of the things that I’ve always taught my staff (especially the managers) is that no one was born knowing any of this and we all had to learn it somewhere - there are no bad questions!

Ahhhh it’s cute Sal instead of Fuzzy Sal… Still sharing that good advice though…

Just wait until I post on my Goblin. Then we’ll see what kind of advice I offer.

I bet it won’t be free! :joy:

So I ended up buying a Samsung V-NAND SSD 860 EVO. I’m pretty sure I need a SATA power cord. Here’s what i’m working with on my hard drive: `https://imgur.com/kjS8N0t

A few questions:

  1. I assume the SSD should go under where the blue cord is in that photo.
  2. The SSD is about half the width of that…bay? So I guess I’m going to need new brackets, right?
  3. There was a connection cord (bottom right) hanging free. But there doesn’t appear to be a power source.
  4. Can I take the power cord from the CD drive and use it here? I never use the CD drive.

looks like the bottom power cable that is connected to your existing hard drive has another SATA power connector that you can use (circled in red), and a spare drive bay slot.

You’ll need another SATA cable to connect it to the open SATA port on the motherboard (circled in yellow)

You can get a bracket to make it fit, or just leave it hanging lol. But that looks bad and potentially could be dangerous if you jostle it around a lot.

You may also be able to just connect one side of the SSD to the bracket, even one screw should suffice since these drives weigh basically nothing.

This is what I did in my old computer, which has since been repurposed and is running without issue. These drives don’t spin or weigh much at all, so all you really need to do is hold it in place as Sal said.

Also notice you seem to be running on integrated graphics - what is the CPU you are using?

You can gain a huge amount of performance by going to a dedicated graphics card.

I’m not entirely sure I know how to answer that question. How would I find the info you need?

CTRL+ALT+Delete

Task Manager

Performance Tab

CPU

What does it say on the right

While you’re there, click on the bottom GPU tab, and tell us what it says on the right.

I assume you mean while I’m playing? Right now it’s between 0-4%

not the value, but the text.

i’ll give you an example here:

It’s not letting me Imgur now of course, which is logical because I’m sure everyone spams inappropriate things in the Hardware forum. I hate big tech.
