Personally, I feel like they’d like nothing more, but I can’t see any way they could possibly do so.
The narrative is simply to tightly bound to it at this point, but it has to be the lowest point in the story. That’s the problem with going to deep into the afterlife, you kill the feel of anything that comes after.
They definitely are not going to purge it but they will probably walk back certain aspects of the SL expansion and ignore some others. Similar to how WoD is mostly ignored despite being technically a major reason why any of this is happening in a way(If WoD didn’t happen Legion wouldn’t have and we would have never broke death with the titan Argus etc)
But at the end of the day, it just kills the suspense of any plot going forward.
“ELUNE! If (world-ending threat) isn’t stopped, we’re all gonna die!”
"But, I guess if that happens, we’ll all just go chill with our covenants where we’re heros to everyone, and best-buds with the leaders. And, I mean, we’re heros and best-buds with all the VIPs of the other covenants too, so we can visit all the other peeps we want whenever we want, so…:
I’m hoping that they really reel it back and at least avoid ever talking about the later SL stuff again. Things like the Beforest Ones, or the fact that the covenant leaders and Nipples Guy (and by extension probably also their counterparts in the different domains) were 3D-printed.
Obviously wrapping up/acknowledging the things that are ongoing (like Amirdrassil, Anduin’s trauma and absence from SW, etc…) is unavoidable.
Hero! You were snoring something fierce! Mumbling in your sleep about daggers and old gods and a bald guy with huge nipples. Steel yourself! We’re arriving on the broken shore soon! Scouts report demons being spotted!
Why would you want to do that? Yes there is a core of angry people who didn’t like the story line but it seems that the majority of whining and complaining about SL had to do with things like borrowed power, long flight times between zones, mechanics of the Torghast tower, etc.
I mean…same can be said with our living life. We literally spent this whole expansion befriending the dragon aspects. Why does doing that in death make it any different?
Would most people honestly be afraid of death if they knew beyond ANY doubt that they would continue on? And beyond that; know exactly where they would be, exactly what they’d be doing, exactly where their friends and loved ones were going be as well, and able to visit them whenever, because they’re already best friends forever with the movers and shakers of that place.
Wow hasnt had the mystery of deth since they made valhalla but wow themed.
And the general populace of the world (average stormwind guard kinda thing) has no clue what happened in shadowlands. Sure, thrall knows where his momma is, but like I dont see the problem.
The Jailer said something about death coming for the soul of our world, and the new storyline they’re working on is called the Worldsoul Saga so it seems to fit nearly with what they have planned. Also the cinematic shows Anduin recovering from being a raid boss in SL
The fact that SL was passed over for repeating BFA as the default leveling experience says a lot. As others have noted, it can’t be retconned out of existence, but I could see the expac itself disappearing from Chromie Time as an option. (Still accessible via portal room, just not offered as a part of gameplay.)
As long as we can retcon the Fae and Kyrian storylines out of existence I’m good. Maybe Maldraxxus as well. Draka’s cool and all but it was kinda lame.
