Will Sylvanas return help or hurt the game?

To be entirely fair, they made the deliberate choice to exchange Malfurion for Ysera in order to help further Merithra’s arc about becoming the new Green Aspect.

They then immediately brought him back after Ysera served her purpose in the story in the very next patch.

While it’s fair to not like this, it’s not like they just “ignored” him.

I’d argue that there’d be an implied “all souls that can be saved”.

Locking someone’s freedom behind an impossible task isn’t exactly a great way to motivate them to do what you’re actually wanting them to do - which would be to save all the remaining souls in the Maw.

In a word - no.

Sylvanas might have reason to be involved in the future story.

Undead have a resistance to the manipulation of the Old Gods and the Void - that could make her useful.

She knows a lot about the various cosmic forces from what she went through with the Jailer about remaking the cosmos and the Zeriths- she certainly must have a better understanding than most.

And we may have a moment where Alleria dies, and Sylvanas has to save Arator because he is family.

There is a lot for her to do.

Also - Tyrande said Sylvanas’s penance begins with clearing out the Maw - like the labors of Hercules, there could be other things for her to do outside of the Maw to make Tyrande feel satisfied.

'Fraid he lost that status hard for me in BfA. One of that expansion’s many crimes was that it made me detest Saurfang.

I will assume she will return in Midnight.

Mightiest DK ever.

Especially due to the reasons for her shoddily written story.

Indeed he should’ve been Warchief and all would’ve been right again in the Horde with an Orc Warchief leading the charge against future threats but alas it’s not so and the Horde is but a shadow of it’s former self.

A perfect ending for her would be to die defending Silvermoon. This entire circus started because she failed to defend the city and it fell to the scourge. Dying to successfully defend it against the void forces would bring it full circle and give her a proper send off. I just don’t want to see her going full Kerrigan

I think its fine to just be another member of Forsaken society for a while, so she has time to think things through and digest everything. Also give writers time to decide what to do. She’s too big of a character to remain just faffing around for too long.

Although I agree its a good start, Tyrande will never be satisfied, nor should she. The burning of Theldrassil and the Nelf souls being tortured in the maw was horrible, a type of wound that never really closes. What I can see is eventually Tyrande not hating Sylvanas as much because its undeniable that she is doing everything in her power to make amends. “I don’t forgive you, but I don’t spite you either” type of thing.

I can picture the Horsemen just looking for a way to revive Saurfang as a DK and lamenting that Varian got utterly Disenchanted because the man was cream of the crop material for a Death Knight.

Think they put a stop to that when her soul finally became one. They took a page out of SwTor with Revan and split her soul into the hate and suffering one (forsaken) and the one trapped in the sword or whatever. Now her soul is one, like they did with Revan in Swtor, and she now has glowing blue eyes and feels bad.

Kerrigan was a great story and her body count is arguably much higher.

okay (10 char)

I shouldn’t be surprised you feel that way.

The Protoss campaign was amazing too and it ended the Starcraft saga in a good way.

No. I’m gonna stop you right there.

I long for the day I can quest with Sylvanas again. Probs in Midnight.

No, she doesn’t deserve it. Looking at the burning Teldrassil with unsettling satisfaction, she lost any chance of redemption, but I’m not against questing with her, maybe a few quests in Shadowlands would be nice. as I mentioned, she can create a new sanctuary in The Maw for the forgotten from all over the universe and give them new hope there.

I want her character to remain as it was, but then her return to Azeroth is impossible. If she comes back and try works with us, they will definitely take away her former personality and make her another Jaina. Which would be worse fate than death.

Exactly! If Sylvanas comes back who will she be?
Ranger General with Banshee’s Memories.
Banshee who suddenly started feeling guilty?
A strange amalgamation of both?
A completely new character?
One thing is certain, it is not the same character we have known for over 20 years

Malf left at the beginning of DF and only returned at the end of the expansion. So he wasn’t present at all in 10.2. It’s like sending Lor’themar somewhere in the Midnight pre-patch and then bringing him back at the very end of the expansion, maybe writers give you a reasons for him to be absent, but it’s just not right.

Maybe you’re right, I took it as if they were talking about every single soul that was sent there. (including destroyed ones)

Personally, I hope that Tyrande was extra spicy in this dialogue and knew exactly what she was saying :nail_care:t2: :sparkles: :sparkles:

Weren’t Forsaken and Sylvanas under the curse of Emerald Nightmare? I think it was mentioned in some book

That would be a good idea. I’m just worried that her road to redemption make her center of attention and will take a lot of screen time from another characters. Also, can we have main elf characters who are not Windrunners? Blood elves as a whole really need to move away from the Windrunner name as soon as possible.

Ain’t that the golden question? I think it will depend on how much of Ranger General took over Banshee. But one thing I agree with you, I don’t want a second Jaina.

Honestly, I don’t mind. I’ve been a big fan of hers since WC3 and how they wrote her in BFA/SL broke my heart. And when it comes to blood/high elves that are not windrunners, I really hope we get to see more Lor’themar. The Belf heritage armor quest with him was really nice, gave some more depth to him and we got the chance to hang out with Liadrin. Last time I got a chance to do so was back in Legion during the DK order hall campaign and I think it was a bit toxic for both sides.

Where was I? Oh, right, Windrunners.

Well I hope you still have stomach for them because while Xal exists we will be close to Alleria and when Midnight comes I highly doubt there won’t be some kind of reunion of the sisters.

At the end of the day I still hold Sylvanas dear in my heart and I hope to quest with her again, but I 100% understand why other people don’t even want to hear the name.

I don’t think her return would be anything people would like.

First her return would likely revolve around her sisters which means mainly interacting with Alliance characters and nothing to do with the Horde.

Two she would have to be constantly apologising and making amends to night elves and essentially cow towing to them as they insult her.

Three likely it would resolve any ties she would have with the forsaken with her officially handing over rule of them to Calia.

Then she would disappear again back to the maw as you can’t have a character who committed an actual genocide getting away with it and hanging around like it never happen.

She is now a narrative cancer and Blizzard knows it because if they do anything with her they will get panned either way by media and customers for terrible writing(they were actively ridiculed by multiple sources for the writing of her in shadowlands). Better they ignore her and leave her in the maw, or just say she died there freeing souls.

If only there was an entire race that developed a whole cult of personality bordering on religious devotion around her to be interacted with.

Wouldn’t need to be exposed all the time. Show a scene here and there, but focus on the work to make amends, not the crowds throwing rotten fruit. Part of the story could be her stopping behaving like a rug and finding her confidence and self-respect again.

To their council? Sure. To Calia specifically? Doubt it. Calia would get part of the leadership since she’s already there but I can’t see Sylv handing full leadership to a Menethil.

Literally Shrodinger’s writing. Bad if you do, bad if you don’t. There are ways to make it not completely awful, but it will take skill from the writers. And a portion of players won’t like it no matter what, one can’t please everyone. Having said that, throwing everything to the air saying “Well if can’t be perfect then it shouldn’t be at all >:(” it’s a reductive mentality that halts possibilities.

Yeah one she probably wants nothing to do with, as new sylvanas has no interest in sycophants that worshiped her old behaviors.

This would be what you want, Not necessarily what would be how blizzard would write it. Sylvanas punishment was to spend eternity in the maw rescuing all the souls that were damned by her actions. Her just coming out of the Maw and escape that punishment would need to be reflected in the story and couldn’t be ignored as she would be hated by so much of the people on Azeroth.

Again, this is what you want not necessarily what blizzard will write and they clearly want Calia leading the Forsaken.

There is really no downside to leaving her out of the story, Her story is resolved and she is in the maw for good. visiting her there isn’t necessarily out of the question but having her leave would only be a negative as then they have to contest with bringing up the whole teldrassil issue again after just finally resolving it. Having her actually be completely destroyed for good probably would be the only outcome I could see with her coming back so blizzard never has to visit that story again.

I think there is potential that she could come back next expansion and then in the Last Titan she could sit on the frozen throne.

We gotta be able to make new Death Knights somehow.
