I get that he loves Sylvanas and wants to show her how important he can be to her cause but trying to flex by trying to knock me down by a peg, the one who goes out and does all the hard work he sends me out to do while he just stands around, grates on my nerves.
I’d hate anyone that basically calls me a piece of crap in every single interaction I have with them?
It’s not even in an endearing or interesting manner which is very much so possible, his entire character is just talking crap about you and acting like a dog in heat for Sylvanas’ leg.
I don’t see a lot of simp behavior from Nathanos. Nathanos was in the awkward position being subject to Sylvanas’ authority, while also being her willing boy toy. I think dark mirror suggests, that while Ranger-Lord Nathanos was under Sylvanas authority, Sylvanas was under Nathanos- and it wasn’t because he said nice things to her and attentively listened to her talking about her cycle of hatred. While he does enjoy Sylvanas’ approval and affections, I think he is pretty much duty oriented, and self validated.
The worst thing you can say about Nathanos is that he is a fool for trusting Sylvanas. And maybe he is, I don’t know, but I think the portrayal of Nathanos as this betaized chump is off base.
It’s true that most of the time Nathanos is shown relaying Sylvanas’ orders, but that’s pretty much his actual job. Sylvanas (and others) got all the action-hero cinematics, so we don’t really get to see what Nathanos can do himself, which kind of sucks. His insincere “Heroes!…follow me.” mocking charismatic leadership, at the battle for Lordaeron was pretty funny.
My issue with Nathanos is that he seemed to be everywhere. He was the main NPC used for Part 1 of the Horde War Campaign, was are Darkshore go too guy, and was the main WQ quest giver for all of Kul’Tiras, and some of Zuldazar. Speaking of Zuldazar I could have accepted his dramatic stare off with Jaina in the Battle for Dazar’alor if they didn’t have him be the one to order the Horde/Zandalari forces to get to Rastakhan. It’s like that should have been Talanji’s role or even Rokhan’s.
He felt a bit shoved down our throats and it didn’t even have a pay out at the end of it all because he stayed loyal to Sylvanas, even though he had story moments making him doubt his loyalty to her.
In vanilla he was a funny jerk, but since Legion he’s just been a straight jerk. There’s a middle ground between kissing the player’s butt and being a male-genitalia, and Nathanos is firmly in the latter camp. The player does everything he asks and does it well, it wouldn’t kill him to not be so gratingly condescending every once in a while.
He was awesome in Vanilla and scary for Alliance players.
Now he represents everything wrong with the Horde, the fact they had to give him a new body is also insulting to Forsaken players. Also he smells and I am biased.
Anyway, Nathanos is a walking inferiority complex. He’s just a dead dude who shoots arrows well and has one-foot-thick plot armor, while we’re the ones actually going out and doing things, and he gets resentful Sylvanas is patting us on the head (as fake as it may be). He wants to be her champion, and hearing her speak highly of anyone but him in any capacity sends him into a teeth-grinding rage.
In vanilla, you go through quests (as a Hordie) to gradually gain his trust as he appreciates that you’re more than just bluster and you’re actually a capable individual who can get things done. But now that goes out the window and everything he says is dripping with scorn unless it’s towards Sylvie.
I think it has something to do with the fact that by the time we’re interacting with Nathanos on a personal level? The time when he’s constantly belittling us? We’re already accomplished veterans. We’re Champions of the Naaru, Hands of A’dal. We’re Kingslayers, we’re the Light of Dawn, we’re Defenders of Shattered Worlds.
And he’s treating us like we’re still killing boars outside of Razor Hill.
This is all the more jarring because, simply put, just by virtue of us being the level we are? We have done more than he has. We aren’t just kind of more accomplished, we’re on a whole 'nother level. There’s a reason that the Warspear Grunts salute us when we walk by, and that’s probably because we were in command positions running entire garrisons of the Horde’s forces. And the fact that we wielded artifact weapons as the head of our forces, be they warriors, hunters, or any of that.
And we’re getting flak from this guy who has a bow. At this point in the game, we shouldn’t have to prove ourselves to him. He really needs to prove himself to us. And he hasn’t, really.
He’s the guy who’s dating the boss and thinks that he has any kind of real authority. We know it. He knows it. And because he can’t be classy about it, he has to try to make it seem like we’re beneath him.
It’s not like a friendly rivalry. It’s the fact that he’s deluded himself into believing he’s more than he is, and acts like it. And we have to pretend that that’s true.
I’ll give him that.
[Edit]
Important distinction, too. Remember, Lor’themar can out-shoot him any day of the week.
So many people are under the impression that Nathanos not kissing our butt is the reason people dislike him. It’s not. There’s a difference between not kissing someone’s butt and being a repetitive unwarranted tool. And it’s disingenuous to say that any hatred for him means that they want him to suck up.
Some Horde Players don’t like him because he is a meanie face to them. They need to be treated like a princess by every character. I remember a lot of people complained about Garona telling us to “get bent”, but I laughed when I first heard her say it. Garona and Nathanos are not exactly Jaina and Anduin.
I think Nathanos had some of the best lines in BfA. He made me laugh throughout the War Campaign. It was fun working with him on the ground.
I like how he was audibly exasperated with almost everything. I can appreciate people who are to the point. I can imagine Characters existing on Azeroth who are rude and snide and dismissive. I am glad they are there. Not everyone should be obsequious and fawning towards us.
I remember as a teenager I worked as a manager at a Pizza Place that a few celebrities would stop by at, because of its location. Some celebrities would seem visibly upset that I did not acknowledge their celebrity status. I treated them as I would any other customer. I will not waste time fawning over one person if there is a line of other customers who are just as hungry, trying to get service.
The people who hate Nathanos remind me of those celebrities who expect some special acknowledgement. The posters who complain about Nathanos might as well just say: “Don’t you know who I am?”
I do not want to be treated as a special snowflake. I am a blue collar guy despite a decade and a half of being a lot more. You can take the boy outta the country… as the saying goes. So your are wrong about why “I” hate Nathanos.
Nathanos is a drama queen. He also is weak and lets Sylvanas determine his every thought and action. For normal people, that kind of weakness is vomit inducing.
Than he actually tries to act like he has a spine to the Horde characters? That is ridiculous. Cairnage would destroy him like the weakling he is.
You think your character is more powerful than Genn, Tyrande, and Malfurion… since they were unable to destroy Nathanos…
It certainly appears you have a warped view of your character’s power level and place in the story. Small wonder you are among those who finds Nathanos grating, if you think your character is more powerful than Genn, Tyrande, and Malfurion.
We disagree on what is normal. I do not think it is normal to have such a delicate stomach, that the attitude of a fictional character can induce vomit. You may have an illness.
Honestly, its because everytime I see him and talk to him and begin to get an inkling of like toward his character and sassiness he goes “Durr Sylvanas don’t talk about muh qwueen”.
He’s like an evil John Snow (later season) that’s a really cool character that got horribly written as a side piece to someone else’s story instead of having their own. For example, if you had an alliance leader constantly obedient to Anduin it would be annoying, but as of yet, they aren’t. In fact many of them talk back or work to advise him, which is understandable as he may be king but they are all leaders who have earned respect.
Otherwise, I’m fine if his powerlevel is up to Tyrande/Malfurion. I really don’t care how strong he is or isn’t. It’s his writers’ writing flaw, not character flaw, that makes he hate him.
The thing I personally find bothersome is how in Classic he’s just as abrasive and insulting (though his insults are somewhat more entertaining), but as you go through his quests you slowly start to gain his respect. You avenge him by killing the abomination that killed him and delivering its head to him, and he salutes you. You kill the Scarlet Oracle and deliver a formidable blow to the Scarlet Crusade at his behest and he outright says you’ve earned his respect.
Now he’s back to treating you like dirt, and his opinion of you remains stagnant throughout the entire expansion regardless of what you accomplish.
It’s one thing to have him not treat the player like a superstar “CHAMPION HERO CHAMPION THE GREAT LET ME KISS YOUR FEET FIFTY-EIGHT TIMES”, but the pendulum swung a tad bit too far in my opinion, making him come across as an insufferable and utterly unpleasable contrarian.
