Why the crazy timing for maintenance?

I dont understand why Blizz doesnt do maintenance starting at about midnight. That would be 3 am for the east coast where I am. Why do maintenance when people are up and wanting to play. Some people may be off from work on a maintenance day and dont get to play the game they pay for until late in the afternoon. I just dont get the timing of maintenance.

I think they could not find anybody to Work from 12:00 AM to 4:00 AM that’s all.

Because there are things called “time zones” and Bliz is not in yours.

Unlike most IT shops where the customer comes first (even internal) and we have to perform maintenance with as little customer interruption as possible. Blizzard doesn’t care.

Goes back to old MMO mindset established with games like EQ, you’re lucky we let you play our game. So you’ll deal with when we decide to do maintenance.

Yes I know this. Thats why I said start at midnight. If you do like midnight to 3 or 4 then it would be available atleast by 7 am in my area and 4 am in their area. Wouldnt that be better hours for maintenance. Thats what they do with ff 14 and it works out better for everyone.

They choose what is likely the least amount of logged in accounts, that’s all

They even moved maintenance later at one point

Seriously though even after the game went up and everything was good it would be cool from an engineer perspective if they had a high-level overview of issues they ran into. It would give people something to look forward to if after extended dowtime you got a blue post “encountered issues” log like:

  • The change to mobs HP was successful but when hit by a Paladin’s divine storm they turn invisible but could still damage players
  • Glide distance reduced for non Evoker Drac classes but if a warlock used teleport during a glide it sent them back to classic Barrens, still working on recovering those test characters…

I know there’s a lot they couldn’t share due to trade secrets and proprietary processes but there’s definitely an opportunity to make it fun for everyone cause you know they see some wild stuff in testing.

They already came in on a Sunday to fix the game about a week ago.

Do you really want higher sub prices? Because that’s what will happen if they come in at midnight.

I can’t image there would be less people on at noon EST compared to 2am.

2 am is oce primetime

If na and oce weren’t connected we’d probably have earlier maintenance

just wondering whats up the website says realms are up but then it says they are down when i try to log in, just trying to confirm its not on my end

That would be cool. But it would probably be something like.

Got hungry right in the middle of maintenance so everyone went out for lunch

Yeah I dont understand that. Why is Oce connected to US? They have horrible latency. Are their no other service areas they can be connected with thats closer to their area?

while blizz maybe US based it doesnt mean there aint any other regions playing, all the non chinese asian countries , australia and new zealand already lose wow for maintenance and moving it back 4 hours throws it right into prime time.

the time slot it is in now fits the world the best without screwing over more than 1 region at a time ( it used to be even worse for oceania where it would be 9:30 / 10pm cutoff on tuesdays for us) now its just after midnight

Every Tuesday people forget time zones are a thing

They themselves don’t have bad latency

Actually, pretty sure around the time oce got their own servers was when maintenance moved from 5 to 7

One of the green texts around here said that is a “retired” page even though it’s still an active link and they “need to take it down”

Dear (presumed) American citizen,

This may be a shock to you, but there are things called “time zones” that exists (google them). As such, Blizzard take these into account when setting what times they’ll continually extend their maintenance from and to.

A second shocking revelation to you, and please sit down for this as it will blow your mind… the game doesn’t resolve around your convenience!

Because it’s well outside of their normal operating hours, and the amount of over time they’d have to weekly pay people to do these updates at home would be silly?

Also you wouldn’t be able to get your entire staff running during off-work hours, so the likelihood of something going wrong and taking even longer would be even higher.

World doesn’t revolve around you.

Every time Ive had a player from Barthilas in one of my groups they had severe lag and disconnects. Doesnt seem to be as bad in other Oce realms but they still do lag and get hit by ground aoes and such a lot.
