Why remove bag sorting?

I can understand defaulting to the original UI for bags – for historical accuracy and whatnot – but why remove the API for sorting bags when you can still emulate this feature with add-ons only terribly slower? In what way would it affect the gameplay? I mean, the precedence is there with Open All Mail and Stop at Next Flight Point. Blizzard has even specifically mentioned small conveniences that have no real impact would be kept in Classic.

[…] Other conveniences such as auto-completion of names or quickly clearing a mailbox have been left in. This seemed an easy enough call given that someone could create an add-on to do the very same thing, and we felt those sorts of conveniences didn’t impact the fundamental “classic” experience.

I would like to have the option to use a server side bag sorting function, unless someone present me a strong reason not to.

And please refrain from simply answering with #nochanges, that’s just lazy.

There are addons that do it.

The entire point was no changes.

It wasn’t there 15 years ago, it’s not there now

I want as few changes to Classic as possible.

Sure, the bag sorting feature is a nice quality of life change, but to me, that’s not the point of Classic.

I hope they continue to keep the changes to a minimum, no matter how much I miss some of the changes made in retail.

I think you forget they’re trying to make this as close to original Vanilla as possible (to whichever patch version they’re basing this off of). Bag sorting didn’t exist then.

To add that, you potentially open up a whole Pandora’s Box of “Why not add (insert suggestion)”. This is not a good slope to get Classic on as it’ll just turn into Retail 2.0 when people demand:

-Transmog
-all classes to have healing and crowd control
-flying
-new zones
-new raids
-new dungeons
-add in expansion (name here)
-faster leveling
-LFG
-LFR

etc etc

I’ve had no trouble keeping tabs on my bag storage without Blizzard holding my hand.

This is meant to replicate the original experience, with all it’s warts and beauty marks. Enjoy it for what it is instead of demanding it be changed to what you personally want it to be.

AFAIK these emulate the feature by recreating the whole bag interface or coming up with terribly slow hacks that move item by item into their new position. When the official feature came out it used a server side function to sort your bags and update the UI in one go. That’s what’s been removed for Classic and what I would like to have access to.

In the spirit of minimizing what is added to the game, they must have decided to skip this one.

Devs have stated numerous times to try and capture the “feel” of WoW. And I think this probably falls under that, considering how differently it changes inventory management.

I’m not demanding anything, I’m politely requesting, and providing a reasoning to back it up.

All your bullet points have huge impact on the gameplay and have been discussed to exhaustion. I agree with them not existing in Classic. What I’m using as precedence are small interface conveniences. For one the whole macro API from retail has been kept. Things that were unimaginable back then are possible with Classic. Like not having to click on each message individually from your Mailbox. Blizzard specifically have said that small conveniences like that would not be removed because they have no impact on gameplay and there were already add-ons that emulated them.

They need to remove dynamic spawning and layering.

Ok, well that’s another topic entirely.

Classic should have the minimum amount of changes possible. It’s understandable that somethings had to change, but the more things the same, the better.

Small interface conveniences ok let’s see now:

-Transmog is purely cosmetic in nature, so we should add that. It would be convenient to me to be able to make my armor look how I want as it doesn’t affect anyone else.
-Having the Collections tab and all mounts go in there as account bound does not impact game play in any way. This is convenient to me as mounts and pets won’t take bag space for me to organize and can be accessed by all my toons.
-LFG will not affect gameplay, it makes grouping ‘more convenient’ just like your bag sorting.
-Faster levelling isn’t changing anything in the long run as we would reach level 60 sooner or later. This way it’s more convenient.
-Flying will make traveling more convenient. They should implement that.

Small conveniences can do a lot to drastically alter the game when you get enough of them. I see no reason to put this ‘convenience’ in, yet not putting any of the ones I listed above. They’re conveniences after all.

Seriously, managing a few bags isn’t rocket science. I do it while half asleep waking up in the morning with a cup of coffee while prepping for work, without no addon. I’m pretty sure you’re capable of it as well if you put some effort into it.

Personally I feel Classic is perfectly fine as it is right now.

Yep, bag organizing definitely leads to LFR, you heard it here first

It’s a matter of adding ‘conveniences for the playerbase’. If they’re both conveniences, why add one and not the other?

Indeed. Stability fixes are fine. But dynamic spawning has caused some issues like critters spawning to fast and overwhelming people.

But back to the sort button. What if someone thought about adding it back then in vanilla. I honestly do wonder if anyone suggested it back then and blizzard said it was an engine limitation. I remember they used that a lot. Honestly i’d like to see small QoL changes. But nothing that makes the game easier just maybe menu stuff.
I’d like that but i understand the situation.

Because one has zero effect on another persons gameplay and the community whereas the other has a tremendous effect on it.

These slippery slope analogies are hilarious.

You list a convenience, I listed one. They both make our lives easier in different ways. LFR doesn’t affect your gameplay in anyway. You sitll have to play the raid itself, it just makes it more convenient in finding a gorup.

How dare you say mine should not be put in but yours should be. how dare you want to deny my convenience and say yours is fine.

Even if some current quality of life changes were discussed back then, they weren’t implemented for whatever reason, so to me they should stay out of Classic.

The problem with making some quality of life changes is that it can lead to requests for more and more changes. Where do you draw the line?

To me, leaving things as much the same as possible is the way to go.

  • Transmog is not cosmetically in nature. If what you wear is what you see people can infer your build and even what exact gear you’re wearing.
  • Collection Tab for would change the fact that mounts take up space in your inventory and making them Account wide would remove the need to re-acquire those mounts with different character, dramatically changing the way we approach mounts. It has huge impact in gameplay.
  • LFG severs communication what could otherwise lead to emergent gameplay opportunities like banter, friendship, etc. It detracts from social connection and hinders trafficking of influence, which can be troublesome in RL but is also a huge opportunity for social dynamics.
  • Faster traveling, be it via air, land or sea, dramatically alters the pace of the game. There needs to be people playing in all stages of the game, at all times, for it to have a healthy economy and social dynamics.

Now clicking each mail button individually or resorting the items in your bags have NO GAMEPLAY IMPACT WHATSOEVER.

Why bother calling for changes to Classic when retail is there waiting for you?

They made no such blanket statement. Ion said they were looking at things on a case-by-case basis and that’s what they did.

I don’t know what you intend to achieve by arguing here. It was a Blizzard decision, not the players’, and there really are addons for Classic that sort bags, including one that is popular in retail, Inventorian. In addition, our bags in Classic will never even get that big even at their largest.
