Why player housing won't work

Its fun to talk about this kind of thing. It’s absolutely full-blown bonkers to expect that this is what we’ll get.

They were all more or less designed from the start to have housing. WoW has 20 years old spaghetti code that doesn’t lend well to what everyone expect housing to be.

It’s gonna bomb.

We had player housing, it’s what Garrisons were called by Blizzard at the Blizzcon they announced them … and PVP whined and whined and whined about how it lead to a lack of lolworldPVP so Blizzard caved to the whining and abandoned the concept.

Same will happen this time, mark my words.

It’d be cool if they let you pick a location, even if it’s instanced; it’d just be a different theme or something. That and picking a style of building are about all I’m hoping for.

Hey, remember when they said we could pick which zone our Garrison went in? Haha.

Caving over world PVP? Ehhhh, doubt it. They’ll tell them to get stuffed or appease them in some other way. Player Housing is too big of a draw.

Fallout 76 was marketed as a straight up open world PVP game and they 180’d on that so fast lol.

I hope they keep trade chat channels out of homes.

The housing will be mostly fine, there will certainly be bugs and it might not end up being what people expect while also having items you can buy on the cash shop. It will still be enough to please the majority. The forums however will end up acting like its a dumpster fire. You’ll have people raging about every tiny bug, people raging how blizzard should be focused on what they want, people screaming about greed when there ends up being cash shop items…so it will literally be a normal day on the forums.

Even though I also have some grand vision of what player housing would be, without knowing certain things I am keeping my expectations in check. For example, RuneScape had a whole skill (profession) dedicated to… well Construction. It made things from its own and other skills to be used in making furniture, decorations, etc. The housing was all instanced.

FFXIV is a bit more streamlined with its carpentry profession (afaik, didn’t overly play FF). Main difference I see is that there are limited “plots”.

If I had to guess, WoW will likely go a more RuneScape esque route with instanced housing and interactions between professions for crafting furniture. Tailoring makes rugs, Leatherworking trophies, etc.

Do I think there will be a carpentry profession? Maybe… but seeing the way archeology and first aid went I am kind of hesitant.

Player housing will work, because it is housing. However, nothing is perfect. So we will deal with what we get, and ask for changes

I’m expecting ESO esque housing. The condition upgrades as you go along automatically, but the actual things you put inside of it you have to go out and play the game to earn.

watch it just be orc and human style housing

I feel the same way about a gothic style house in Tirisfal.

Better question is why are they even talking about Midnight when we’re like 0.5 patches into a brand new expansion.

Imagine debating a Wrath feature before Black Temple even opened.

Blizzard has a way of learning at times. I want to see them combine some of the tech they used with Garrisons but housing style for warbands.

But it’ll probably be something different.

If it’s boring, I’ll lose interest real quick (like, room at the Inn boring).

We know they have the building tech (and the phasing tech).

Maybe we’ll get a neighborhoods type of thing.

You mean like the lack of Flying on Draenor? Or their inability to deliver Karabor as a capital city? Almost 5 months before the PTR.

Rum Runners Cove for me!

That’s the thing. WoW has 20 years worth of assets to draw housing decor and building materials from. They could offer up so many unique items for housing it would be a travesty if it’s limited to only one or two race’s style.

I doubt that’s gunna happen. The game world isn’t designed for that like some others were (rip star wars galaxies).

I would bet money that it’s going to be instanced. Like an apartment or plot of land in/near each capital city kinda thing.

It is most likely going to be an instanced area with neighborhoods.

SWG had a perfectly serviceable housing system and it came out a year after WoW.
