Why not just lift all transmog restrictions entirely?

From the official Mage class description:

To avoid interference with their spellcasting, magi wear only cloth armor, but arcane shields and enchantments give them additional protection.

But again, that rule is broken all the time by npcs.

I know a little about game coding and transmog restrictions probably have something to do with code strings for gear

there are no npcs in plate that are mages, not even Jaina or Khadgar, anadonis, or any other significant named mage lore character

the only exception are mage-like specialized classes, i.e. battle mages who wear plate but can’t cast spells instead channel magic through their weapons, or spellbreakers but as pointed out above, they wear cloth dresses and they tend to steal arcane magic rather than actually generate their own, but I doubt that counts as that’s no different than a Death Knight who too can steal magic/spells from a mage and can dabble with some arcane magics too, but that doesn’t make them a true mage.

You cannot have folks running around with silly outfits! People will have silly outfits, fish for weapons, cloth users in plate, plate users in cloth! A wizzard instead of a two handed stave will we wielding a two handed sword! I think the cosmos would come to a screeching halt. AND it will totally ruin any sense of emersion. MY God man, get ahold of yourself…

Something something class fantasy.

yeah, that’s right, my DH who can expertly wield two massive hunks of metal cannot pick up a dagger.

While I agree that the particular robe in question looks pretty form fitting, in general skirts allow for quite free movement, and versions of skirts/kilts have been worn by various warrior peoples for centuries for that very reason.

My warrior who can still expertly wield the azzinoth glaives cannot mog them. Pain all-around.

I like ESO. The leveling is fun, but the biggest downfall for me, is having to level up the random skill lines, like the PvP ones, and the fighter’s guild. The CP change to give mount speed is nice for new character, though.

The outfit system is the best I’ve ever used. You don’t need to update it with new gear, you can have multiple outfits made and switch freely as you wish, it only costs gold to make/change one (lookin at dauntless and GW2), you can use all armor types no matter what. My only complaint is getting a staff for my magplar that looks like a spear.

FWIW

The MoP warlock sets have all kinds of metal on them.
Lets not look at the vampire covenant and all the metal on that gear too…
Let’s also not forget all the cloth plate sets like judgement either!
Priests would be able to wear plate if it didn’t matter yet priests as a class can only wear cloth? This sounds like a game mechanic for balancing to me and not a legitimate sticking point. for current lore considering all the stuff that contrasts that singular sentence from the vast majority of the other lore.

One sentence that was most likely written literally more than 2 decades ago that most likely was a flavorful explanation as to why the player can’t wear plate that is also literally challenged by all kinds of stuff we see in game? idk sounds iffy to me…

Yes that’s why i said dresses, i meant it as something that clears past the knee towards the ankle with no apparent cuts to allow actual movement. Battle garbs usually came to the knee and people who could afford it would wear some type of protection that covered the legs. Largely because of the movement issues of stuff constricting. Longer stuff like what you see in WoW would have most likely been tied off to come back to knee height or ceremonial.

Edit: on that note if channeling arcane energy through plate doesn’t work how do we get enchanted plate armor?

I agree. You’re also able to dye your armor so that if you mix/match styles you can still make a cohesive looking set.

I really don’t think WoW can do this though. ESO had armor dying practically from the start, so they planned for it. WoW has so much armor in the game, going back and allowing for it to be dyed is highly unlikely.

I also love how in ESO you mog the slot not the actual piece of armor, so if you get an upgrade you don’t need to hoof it back to an outfit station to fix it every time.

Again, much like priests who use Holy Magic… Warlocks don’t use Arcane Magic… they use Fel magic.

venthyr denizens aren’t mages

again, priests dont use arcane magic…

Not sure why you’re mentioning all these other classes or races when from the first comment where you replied to the OP who was specifically talking about Mages using Arcane Magic (not priests, not warlocks, not covenants, etc):

Warlocks also use fire magic. So If i were a Fire mage i would be able to wear metal? This is why i say the idea behind mages mean no armor is a fallicy that was implemented in 1 sentence on a class design page for the game itself when there are literal tons of characters in game that are not player controlled that do things that break those rules.

My mage joined the covenant and likes to wear their armor though? Just saying

Because I am of the belief that magic isn’t really a priests only heal mages only cast arcane blasts sort of thing. It just doesn’t make sense with how the bad guys swap from being traditional ‘good guys’ into bad guys using a completely different power set. I believe that most of it is through study.

Arthas didn’t touch frostmourne then magically could cast warlock spells of shadow and arcane (btw necromancy is considered a type of arcane magic by the dalaran mages). He was taught to do said magic by his warlock/shaman teacher who was trapped in the magical ice cube. Trying to argue for it when your ONLY proof involves the explanation of a character class when everything in game fails to follow that same statement isn’t a real justification.

It’s a game design if anything because that is the only reasonable thing that I can come up with as to why the characters in game can ignore the ‘rules’ outside of the lore itself not mattering in any way shape of form.

One upside of WoW, is a significant amount of the armor is nothing more than a 2D texture plastered upon your character (also, there’s quite a few repeats of said textures) And the pieces that aren’t, share a fairly simple design language I don’t think would be too hard to translate into taking dyes.

That said, I wouldn’t mind if dyes only worked on newer armor. I’d gladly take that over nothing.

Are you just salty that she pointed out that you were wrong?

Felfire.

Your beliefs are irrelevant when discussing the actual game lore and how magic schools work.

I just want WoD and prior dual armor type mog system back with the newest sets from Legion onward included…think of the themes I could do with leather?

not all warlock spells use felfire unless they learn how through a quest.

there’s a reason lock fire can be red or green.

and your belief that mages can’t wear plate based on a flavorful justification on one page describing a game class when there are thing in game that go against it means just as much.

spellbreakers use arcane magic and wear armor. thats a fact. spellsteal is a ranged arcane spell.

If anything haven’t battle mages been able to amplify their armor with magic and vice versa for a while now in WoW lore?

from what I remember battle/war-mages prefer light armor but can’t use spells with somatic components witch are hand gestures i believe… makes a bit of sense since they have the whole sword and staff thing going on though

Because the dev in charge of transmog has control issues.
