Why is World of Warcraft the way it is?

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the core gameplay of World of Warcraft, but as far as World of Warcraft as a “Games as Service” type of a game as something that should be continually improving… I don’t get it.

I don’t really understand why it feels like the community has to try to bully Team 2 into actually making the game better. I’ve been playing some other games the past several weeks taking a brief break from WoW and in those other live-service titles you get the sense that the developers care deeply about the game, they’re self-motivated to try to make the game as fun as possible for the players.

There’s this tug-of-war between the community and Team 2 that just doesn’t make any sense to me at all. I just don’t understand it. I really, really don’t.

This really became apparent to me when I was watching a video from Bellular hyping up an imaginary version of 9.2 and I forgot that this was fan-content. And then realizing that this isn’t actual World of Warcraft content because it actually has true passion and love of the franchise behind it. Team 2 makes good playable content but it feels like it came off an automated assembly line and with a bunch of jank and lack of heart.

(I’d like to end with some comment about unsubbing, but my 6-month doesn’t run out until Janaury. At least I got some Hearthstone packs + Tavern Pass out of the deal).

Some people claim it’s due to wanting to maximize time played metrics.
Some people claim it’s to push token sales.
Some people say it’s anger over having to include flying

No one knows.

You can see why pretty easily. With recent changes that have been pshed by the actual development team rather than management. The fact is that there is something going on with the developers that requires immediate mental health assistance. It is hard to develop, design or be creative when you suffer from the type of issues they do.

On top of that, they seem OVERLY arrogant. When something is brought to your attention as a bad idea and you stick by it for over a year, I dunno maybe you shouldn’t be working on customer products and instead should take up a line of work elsewhere.

Goggle Tseric, he summed it up pretty well on his way out the door.

I have speculated elsewhere why. What I will say is it’s abundantly clear that the passion for making an awesome game, the clear shared vision of what that will be, and the willingness to be humble: Is no longer in the building. /shrug

Honestly its disheartening. The more I look at what’s going on it’s become clear that in trying to solve some symptoms the solutions didn’t actually solve the intended problems. So without actually addressing the core problems I see a very difficult path for retail going forward. I do see them looking and teasing at those problems in classic however.

The heart and soul is gone. It is just people trying to make an income now.

I thought the team 1/team 2 thing was debunked?

Regardless, I think the game is designed around high end endgame play and everything else is an after thought. You can see it easily in the ilvl disparity and how that impacts power. It’s why casual pvp is such a mess.

Those of us who prefer other play styles are kind of left to wait for the patch that best suits how we enjoy the game.

The collectors have a pretty good amount of stuff to pursue I guess, but if your in that middle space of not having the time to grind out the best gear, like me, kind of need to settle for the mediocrity of what else is available.

Those other games aren’t so heavily focused on “mythic raid or die” so they seem better developed for more casual play styles. Wow, is always in flux, and the longer I’m around the more I realize you have to just pick your patch based on what qol is being offered and how things are tuned.

Team 1 is gone and all that is left is Team 2 and they don’t know what to do.

It always amazes and amuses me to see what entitled customers think a product should be because it is always over and above what the product is bought as.

Because they have entitlement issues so they are unable to ask nicely.

???

Better according to whom?

Personally, I think the majority of suggestions on this board would make the game worse, much worse. And that is saying something.

As in spidey-sense it?

There is no tug-of-war.

Blizzard has all the power and makes all the decisions.

Has it never struck you are suspicious that the same cycle of ‘improvements’ (aka as making-the-game-easier-and-simpler-for-the-whiny) happens over and over the same way for the last how many expansions?

It is pre-planned. Once the ‘real’ players have completed and competed in all their content on max difficulty and challenge, Blizzard makes the game easier and simpler for ‘the little guy’.

That why there was a built-in ripcord for this expansion. And the only reason the timetable to use it was moved up is because of the scandal.

Sentenzah, thank you for adding that you were going to unsub in January. I genuinely appreciate that you did not add it as a title like the big ego people. I was shocked by final fantasy’s development team and how the community protects them. The WoW community is very toxic. Simple.

It’s Canary M. Burns fault.

It’s been almost two decades. Most games don’t make it half as long.

How do you continually improve something for that long?

The answer is you can’t.

Eh. The ripcord also isnt making the game easier. Switching covs wasnt hard it was just tedious and didnt stop anyone serious about swapping and the cov decision was never meaningful

If they preplanned this stuff: then its a dumb plan to piss off customers who gave feedback that they didnt want it.

To develop content where you lock players out of 3/4 of it unless they grind out a punishment or level alts isnt great design.

You might want to consider watching 10 minutes of paint drying instead.

No, it has a desire for views and $$$ for really nothing of value behind it. I will never ever understand how “content creators” (what a joke) can make a living essentially leeching off the work of others.

I mean i cant even log into the game right now cuz they got problems with the servers

If you strip Bobby 30 million of his bonus and leave him only 20, you could pay like 300 people 100k in salary/benefits per year. And those extra staffers could be making more money for the company and improving the game.

To much executive overhead going on so they have no budget for peons to do the developing.

Some of the current devs may be some of the victims of the harassment that ActiBlizz allowed previous devs to dish out, and as such, they feel they need to remove anything that might seem questionable to the snowflake crowd. Also, upper management thinks that these changes might make them look better for their lawsuit, they don’t of course, nothing can really change the fact that ActiBlizz allowed this abuse to go on even after they were informed of it.

Now, I do fully agree with removing references to the previous devs that were terrible, ******, ************* people, that harassed, abused and discriminated against women they worked with(perhaps others as well), and removing any reference to those terrible devs is a good thing. However, removing jokes, emotes, digitally made pictures, while ActiBlizz is trying to deny responsibility for their negligence, well, that’s pretty hypocritical. Personally, I believe ActiBlizz to be as much at fault as the devs that perpetrated the harassment and discrimination.

Furthermore, even giving the devs the benefit of the doubt doesn’t change the fact they they are arrogantly, and stupidly, refusing to listen to the feedback of their customers. If they can’t put their personal feeling aside and work with the content that they find “questionable”(which is very subjective btw), then they need to work on something other than WoW.

Yes, I am aware that sounds incredibly cold and callous, especially given my own past experiences with abuse, loss and PTSD. However, because of my past experiences I could look these people in the eyes and confidently tell them to put on their grown up pants and do their jobs regardless of their feelings. A strong person doesn’t hide from what bothers them, a strong person faces it, overcomes it and afterward it doesn’t bother them anymore.

Cowboy up and soldier on, devs, and stop forcing your political views into a fantasy game. /spit

Both Communities are toxic, however, what i notice on FF14 content creators and recent media tour interviews is that the Japanese treatment to the client is really different.

For example, anniefuchsia had an interview with Yoshi-P and her questions were more about UI and he answered even the techincal details regarding those limitations, However, when we’ve interviews with WoW Devs, the conversation is like really structured with questions being provided before the interview and some topics being discarded .

This is a company that has devs who tell the original diablo dev to bugger off [obviously something worse said] when the guy criticized Diablo 3.

Team 2 is a stubborn, hard headed group who just go through the motions and now are on their own parade of self-grandeur. To have some weird illusion that they are doing changes that benefit themselves, and others and are doing an awesome job because if you speak ill of what they do, you’ll get blocked on twitter

Bruh, if its the games I think you’re talking about then the reason is because they ain’t in a cultural fight and its not being developed by Americans.

Blizzard like many other American I.P.s are stuck trying to apease a certain demograph which for some reason these companies think its more important to virtue signal then to make a great product for their fan base.

I personally think its an excuse to avoid responsiblity for the lack of innovation. Its easier to point the finger at a disgruntled customer and say you’re being toxic or what ever buzz word of the day is.

Its a real shame on what is going on in the American Comic book, Hollywood and video game industry.

I’m just waiting for it all to collapse. You’re already seeing it with Netflix and other brands pushing back.

Hopefully things wil get back to normal.
