Why is raid healing so overwhelming?!

I did my first heroic raid last night, and I’m wondering if I should continue. I couldn’t see a darn thing around Artificer because of all the spells going off, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t survive the second Annihilation.

I did 2.4k HPS at 203 ILVL as a Holy Priest, so I think that’s an HPS issue from me.

Raid is so big and overwhelming and I don’t think I’m cut out for that kind of thing.

Wondering if I’m just a bad healer/player or if someone messed up, more likely the former.

Pretty sure it is WAY easier than healing mythic +, so there’s that.

I don’t know the fight, so I can’t answer to that. But I wouldn’t put yourself down, even if you were doing something wrong doesn’t make you a bad healer or player, just means you have a couple things to work on. I’d suggest asking some of your guild mates from the run if maybe they saw what you might have been doing wrong. Or see if YouTube has a video of the fight from a healer’s perspective and see if you can find anything you might have done wrong.

But I wouldn’t give up. Healing is a lot of fun and very rewarding. My favorite moments are when I can save someone with a well timed guardian or leap of faith. I live for the “great heals, thanks!” moments. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

This makes me have to ask… are you trying to heal via targeting people’s nameplates? If so, don’t do that.

No, I use Vuhdo, but it was a little hard seeing stuff I had to dodge with all the crap on the ground around the boss.

I believe you can turn off some spell effects in the interface, may be something to look into.

edit: You can, in settings look for spell density.

maybe move raid player tags around, change resolution to make players easier to see dots debuffs what not. maybe make tank focus target and target his target or aoe when necessary. ask a few folks what to expect and when. read the dungeon journal synopsis

It is. Raid healing is relaxing compared to healing M+. I just don’t think you’re cut out for healing, OP.

It was my first time, and I have little trouble with healing smaller groups…so I have no idea what my problem is.

I think it was just AAH RAID HAS MANY PEOPLE and its WEIRD

You just need to learn the mechanics and when there are damage bursts. Your HPS will improve after that. You do not always have to watch the whole fight if you know what is going on and when to know to respond to mechanics, you can just focus on throwing out heals to the right people. It’s really about getting into a flow after you learn the mechanics.

Keep trying. I would think you could probably hit around 4k+ at ilvl 203, depending on the fight.

Agree with both of you…raid healing feels relaxing after being the sole person responsible for keeping the group alive in a +12, lol. But the challenge it presents…it really hones your skills.

Whenever you do something new it’s hard to take it all in. What really helps is watching videos on the boss before hand and reading all the bosses abilities in the dungeon journal. That way you can information chunk and deal with things much easier.

Also, don’t worry about playing perfectly at the first. ABC: always be casting. And as you get to know the fight better you can dial-in better play.

I get a feeling you might be new to healing, so don’t come down on yourself for not doing a stellar job the first time out. Raiding is not of everyone but you should try it and keep at it until your sure that it’s not for you. You might get better at healing and get a kick out of it.

Keep practicing and try the proving grounds until you can get silver without so much as a sweat, then go for gold but silver is fine.

For myself raiding is not my thing I don’t care for it.

edit: Raiding is about learning the fights and getting ready for things that will happen, or getting ready before they happen. If you don’t know the fights you’re in for a bad time.

Is Artificer the only fight you did? Do you not understand his mechanics? I will say that after SLG and Sire, it’s the fight which requires you to watch your feet and move the most. In that sense it’s trickier to heal than a lot of other fights, because you can’t get caught sleeping looking at your raid frames.

Idk, if you’re inexperienced at raid healing, then you’ll get better when you get more accustomed to the flow of the fights. Jumping into heroic when you haven’t even done it on normal probably isn’t the play.

I understood mechanics, but a lot of the guild died on first and second Annihilation. I died without fail on the second Annihilation because Soulshape wasn’t up.

I heal by targeting nameplates… just don’t want to do the mouseover macro and I do fine in mythics and raids. I’m sure it’s not “optimal,” but meh.

Well, I know that fight has a ton of stuff going on and my first time was also overwhelming as a dps.

Add in the fact that DPS (like me!) sure love to stand in stuff AND you constantly have to move…I wouldn’t be to hard on yourself.

Most Heroic fights are always overwhelming for me the first time until I get a feel for it.

Healing has to be a tough job. I’m just thankful I don’t have to do it! Don’t give up

Coming from FFXIV the raids in this game are nothing short of a complete unabashed mess of people.

It’s pure chaos and carnage. Especially when 1 person out of the 30 people messes a mechanic and the entire group takes literally unhealable damage.

Well annihilation is not a heal mechanic, it’s a guaranteed one shot. If people died to that, it’s not your fault.

For the record, in phase 3, you put the portals by the boss and in the middle of the room. When he starts casting annihilation, you fight it for as long as you can until the last ~2 seconds (watch the countdown on DBM), then let it suck you into the portal in the middle, which will bring you out to safety.
