Why is my game lagging so randomly?

Problem:
playing for 1 min to 30 mins game will just soft lock. players start running in place and the game is unresponsive. Eventually it kicks me to the “you’ve been disconnected” screen and i log back in things are fine for a while.

ASUS Z590-A
I910900k water cooled
(inside case temp is appx 45-55c when playing)
gskill ripjaws 32gb pc 4000
two 1tb NVME samsung evo
EVGA RTX 3070 xc3 ultra(factory settings)
850w gold cert Cooler master psu
win 11 pro
creative sound blaster z

ive run winMTR for as much as an hour straight with zero packet loss. no need to post it, ive done it before and spoken with T3 tech support at spectrum. they have said my traffic is being routed from my house to upstate NY then to NYC and across the ocean. cant explain why when the server i play on (proudmoore) is west coast USA.
no proxy or vpn
speed test reports 400mbps down and 25up, ping is 45ms(ish)

-running a total of 8 addons, all of which are updated(lately daily before login).
elvui (also elv ui shadow and light- i suspect this might be the issue), details damage meter, healbot(only on one toon i dont often play), pawn, auctionator, silver dragon, weak auras(1 total plugin)
total addon memory 53mb Though it does slowly creep up sometimes, and will go back down. I’ve seen it as low as 40mb and high as 90mb

My video card and processor never go above 75% usage (even in a raid/ dungeon) , temps are very cool, typically under 40 or 50c, i idle at 31-32c

graphics are fairly high but not max, using a MSI optix G27 2k monitor 1ms response time.

For the life of me i cannot find the cause, except a bad addon(lua errrors are turned on but no popup yet) or something wonky about how wow is routing traffic.
this has been happening for over a month now.

thanks for reading, hopefully you guys have some ideas i havent already found or tried.
game completely uninstalled/ reinstalled
addons completely reinstalled
all wow cleared from registry after uninstall
i even went as far as to run bleach bit and do a multipass wiping all the free space on my drive after i uninstalled wow.
new modem and router
new ethernet cables

since the time i wrote this post it has happened 15 times in 3 ish hours.

happens to me a lot today. kind of a soft disconnect where everything is unresponsive and ppl run in place but it keeps me in the game. have to alt-f4 and comeback and it’ll likely happen again soon after.

irritating.

Hi Starrskrream

This could be a tough one. Looks like you have done a good deal of troubleshooting yourself. Have you tried a VPN. If not give that a go.

Test game while in a selective startup mode:

Follow the instructions on this support page carefully.

Run this quick little scanner from Malwarebytes:

AdwCleaner - Free Adware Cleaner & Removal Tool | Malwarebytes

When the tool is finished running you will be given a button to “Run Basic Repair” - click that.

are you running any of the same mods as i am? At least we can turn those off if any and see what happens. Ive gotten this to happen with no mods installed.

Small update,
Auctionator has been producing a shared window error when auctionator is open. it happens once, and typically only when my backpack is open and i try to shift click an item into auction window so i dont have to type it out.

hasnt been happening since that day. idk what was going on.

dont think it was the addons i didnt change them since

scanner found nothing to fix. ran the repair, no changes.
I use spybot S&D weekly, defrag/optimize weekly
vpn made no difference.

background apps running using anything listed as higher than medium impact:
Wow 21.3%cps 4,582 mb memory 69% gpu
opera GX - 0.2% cps 610mb of memory
literally everything else in process list is using less than 100mb of memory some as low as 1-2mb .(21 more items listed)
ran a memtest last night(6 hours worth) 100% passed
samsung magician reports zero issues with any of my drives

on an outside chance, WOW is NOT installed on C drive. though i doubt that would make any difference what so ever.

I had hopes for the VPN test. Did you run the game while in the Selective Startup mode?

When one of these hangs occurs run MSInfo > Windows Error Reporting.

(1) Type MSinfo in Windows Search.
(2) Open the “System Information” tool.
(3) Expand “Software Environment”.
(4) Open “Windows Error Reporting” at bottom.

Then click “File” in top corner. Click “Export” - give the file a name and make a note where it is going to be saved.

Paste the report you have on Pastebin.com. That will be a wall of text. Provide the link code portion of the URL - example below.

(The green bold portion at the end of this example link: https://pastebin.com/Qk28Ed1P <=== this code)

Alternately you can place the link in a Preformatted Text box. Paste the link in the chatbox - then highlight it. Click the preformatted text button along the top of the chatbox - looks like this </>

Will look like this example afterwards:

https://pastebin.com/xxxxxxxx

I noted other errors with Armourysocketserver(i think this app has something to do with the rgb lighting in my motherboard), and loads of errors with rainmeter. It could be that rainmeter is causing this. I’m going to stop using the specific module mentioned in the errors and see where that leads after a day or two of play in wow. If it continues i will turn off rainmeter completely and see where that leads.

Here is the wow error(s) i copy pasted one of each for simplicity, these two were repeated several times.

I’ve been having this exact same set of issues crop up over the last several days. If you find a prospective fix, please dear lord let me know. Absolutely nothing I’ve tried so far has worked.

Hi Starrskrream

Armory is Asus auto update system. I have seen it as the cause of many issues. It is difficult to disable or even uninstall. There is a setting in the Bios that turns it off completely.

so far i unloaded the modules related to cpu tracking in rainmeter - no luck.
i just totally turned off rainmeter. after it happened 2 mins ago.
idk if that is the cause or not.

really, though, playing wow, watching a movie and everything else my cpu is maybe 40% load. gpu is roughly 60%
my system is more than capable of handling anything i throw at it.

this has to be a wow problem. just look at the errors above…wow.exe has stopped interacting with windows…why ?
on the last freeze i noted that the mobs were running in place , but all the chats were working fine. guild chat people were chatting, world chat/ zone chats were moving along normally.
/

EDIT: Went afk for about 15 mins in valdraken, came back and everyone was running in place. world and home latency was like 45/50ms i could move around but not interact with anyone or anything, chat was still going but the game itself was locked.

The same thing has been happening to me all day. Last night it was fine. No updates other than windows. Reset my IP, ran a windows repair tool, repaired and scanned Bnet. The problem isn’t on my end. I log in and after many failed loading screen I may get to play 10 minutes before I’m disconnected again. Very frustrated at this point.

I have also been having problems mostly since last reset. My internet isn’t super amazing right now but it’s the same connection I had the week before with no unusual issues. Other MMORPGs I play feel stable.

I see really high world and moderately high home MS in game.

@tratt
I still have not solved this.
have you or anyone figured this out?

Hello again Starrskrream

Sorry your thread got buried in the shuffle on here. I took a look through it again. What you could try and what has worked for a good number of folk recently is a VPN. I would try that - Nord VPN is one I see players use.

Also check in-game Network settings - if IPv6 is enabled disable that.

even if a vpn was the end all beat all magic solution…
why should i have to pay for something to make wow work? My system is more than capable, and been proven by outside sources that my system and network is not the issue.
it has something to do with wow, some setting etc… im not the only one with this issue, i see multiple posts in this forum about similar and the same issues.

a vpn is not the answer.

If the VPN works then it isn’t the game - it’s something along the signal path that is interfering with your connection. Could be an ISP switch configuration or a Router configuration - software on your machine.

You could also try setting up a mobile hotspot on your cellphone to test things. At this point we don’t even know if it is a connection issue. Still troubleshooting things.

When it is a true Blizzard connection issue you know it - the forum here is on fire. You can watch the posts build by the minute.

Yea its a blizzard issue dude only streamers get good fps

I have to comment on this I know your probably ambassador or something but how can you explain the game having so much trouble keeping up with lagging and freezing. I joined a world boss the other day when it had over 30 players the game froze I had to do the world boss twice. I have a buddy that has high dollar computer and having these issues I hate when you shift the blame the reason it’s causing it is the players computer or settings. This lag was never this bad in shadowlands. I think the servers sre getting servely strained with how much people that’s came back plus with how many things you have going on all the time it has to load all that in as it’s happening. I really think should make more servers or something and make some of these high pop servers alittle smaller to help that out or update your servers so they can take the strain. I don’t think you all expected so many people to come back.

And also im not going to change any more my settings cause you tell me to when it runs fine on everything else. It could messing something up on my computer doing that stuff. It’s something in your game thats causing it not the other way around. Shoot it could be as something easy as coding that got messed up some were or your servers.
