If I recall correctly, they’ve done some pretty hefty ban waves prior to other big patches/expansion releases. It drives home the lesson that any sort of sanctionable offenses will not be tolerated. You get a seven-day vacation, which sucks on the general, but you’re also missing out of a particularly crucial week of events.
