Genuine question. It does like 25 damage and requires a dodge to even use. What is the point of this ability?
it’s a subpar melee ability for a class that is not at all specialized in melee fighting what do you expect.
Nerf hunter?
Melee hunters can definitely work, especially with flanking strike and cleave. Mongoose is a joke though, curious as to why it’s so low.
IMHO WoW hunter came at a weird time for the archtype
Before WoW, Aragorn was the archtype for rangers was mainly 2 hand melee / druid hybrid - stayed that way through early D&D
Then Drizzt came out and was immediately changed to dual weild with a pet (this is where I think WoW hunters were based)
THen the LOTR movies came out and you have Legolas who is basically shown as an archer and so many went for that it became the newest archtype
Longwinded way to say I think the original idea was to have a melee hunter with a reduced warrior skillset (like older Rangers were) that just got forgotten about as the archtype changed with the times
Kinda like gnomes - I remember gnomes before they became tinkerers in Dragonlance and became what we know them as today
Kind of hoping they get more melee runes that’ll buff up those abilities.
I mean reality it’s probably more likely that, ranger is a melee class in vanilla EverQuest until AAs were introduced. They were a melee hybrid with Druid in EverQuest and the OG developers were hardcore EverQuest players.
They should make a rune that makes mongoose bite work like overpower and do fat damage.

EQ classes very closely mirrored 80s D&D except SKs which were a variation of the anti-paladin from Dragon
Expectation: hunters will rip threat off their pet, have the mob run over and engage the hunter in melee. The hunter will not run, but respond with switching to aspect of the monkey and engage in melee. Dodges will be rewarded with access to an mongoose bite.
Reality: Eyo whys this ranged class got melee attacks?
Hunters should have had a tanking rune added. The survival tree is almost built for that as is.
i had this on my bar but its useless, i just wingclip if i get into melee range as a last ditch effort to save myself.
they could have made this ability really good with lone wolf/cleave but they didnt
For a hunter thats so broken, they need to nerf hunters into the ground. How is possible to do 25 dmg?

Why are Arcane Shot and Serpent Sting abilities? They do 2 and 3 DPS resepctively.
No one knows. I guess they just wanted Hunters to have something to spend mana on.
Hunters were the last class to get worked on/finished before the original release date of 2004. Thus were the most imcomplete.
They were a bit of a mess in the beginning.
What is really going to suck is when they give us a really fun rune next phase and have it share a spot that gives arcane shot, serpent sting, traps, etc some kind of scaling.
Once again making hunters chose from fun or doing 20% more damage.
Im running chimera shot just because of how boring bm is, but i know i will do more dps with bm rune.
