Why IS maintenance so long?

Lol the name suits you. The polygon count of everything in this game has exploded. What are you even on?

Funny thing about it is that even though the polygon count has “exploded” as you say, the minimum requirements for the game are still very reasonably low and welcoming even for a very new gamer with limited computer hardware knowledge.

Interestingly, I found an old surface 3 and installed wow for the fun of it. Intel Atom, 4gb, and put it on a microSd because the base drive is only 64gb.

Runs fine… could do a world quest, but I wouldn’t instance with it. YMMV

This needs to be addressed. The game could probably be so much better if we could get a new engine.

I feel like while this is def a big part of the problem, the cost (not just dollar amount, but also downtime, manpower, risks, etc) is not worth it for them. It would be cheaper in all ways to simply make a WoW2 than it would be to change engines at this point and even THAT would cost them multiple millions of dollars. It’s a huge investment that I don’t think anyone in the company is willing to make given how frugal they’ve been getting over time.

no other company have that much downtime. my friend who worked for a restaurant chain website, if the website went down cost xxx,xxx dls per min, heads start rolling, severities Ceos got involve was a HUGE deal…

i guess since you already paid subscription and you prepay; they already have your money, so they don’t care.

why don’t they start at 4 am? every Tuesday morning ppl want to log and see what they got from the vault.

They released a broken game in a rush and they don’t know how to fix it.

tbh I think Quill’s comment way above is pretty valid that there may just be very few people with deep engine knowledge. Lack of good documentation could absolutely lead to the clustercluck that is our random maintenance windows.

There has always been issue any time there is an update , fix or patch that is server side, because those are installed by techs at data centers that Blizzard rents all over the world. Blizzard staff is not there manually doing it , jim bob the server guy at AT&T is installing it.

The game is still a bug-filled mess, so there’s plenty that needs to be fixed. Whether they manage to is the big question.

On boarding the zeppelin for Dragonland with a new alt today, she did a left turn mid-ramp and plummeted to the ground. I did it again, mounted this time, and the same thing happened. Stick that on the very long list. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Some i5 and 1060. I never had to wait more than 10 sec for loading… or ever lagged during whatever I had to do. Now it’s 2~3 minutes loading every time I go somewhere and even choppy graphic time to time.

This is a complete and total shot in the dark, but my guess is something along the lines of file size for stuff they can’t hotfix. I work with some data I would consider to be fairly sizeable; 10s if not 100s of gigs, and it can be an effort to kick that kind of data out.

They have literally petabytes of data, and I have no idea how that is broken down into different files, and I’m sure their tech is far more advanced for updating, but technology can only go so fast.

It would make a lot of sense if the explanation was simply they start the update of overwriting existing game files and know it should take roughly X time, but are off for some reason, could be as simple as a file failed to update and they have to run the process again.

I’m sure it’s more complicated than that, but is kind of my guess in that whatever they are pushing for updates is very intense to update and whenever they an update is problematic it’s a major time setback.

This one is wild. I’ve had camera issues where there’s a delay with keyboard turning, and a couple of times my character ran off in a random direction. Neither issue has happened in a couple of weeks though.

Oh God yes. I’ve reached the point in my career where at least 10% of my time is spent patching odd edge cases from kludges I made 15-18 years ago.
