Why IS maintenance so long?

Why is the sun so hot?

Honestly tho? You’re not nearly as wrong as you’d think. While programming isn’t my specialty I have been through several classes worth of it- enough to know that there is a hell of a lot more to programs than most people imagine.

Did a class project last semester involving making a phone app and found out the hard way that nearly ALL of it relies on databases like SQL for anything from logging in to pulling down group information, etc etc. We didn’t get far, but we learned a lot.

Now make it like x2000 times bigger and more complex and I imagine you’d get something like what WoW is. It’s all just super interesting to me even if I kinda suck at it lol

I’m that weirdo who’s more interested in how the pinsetter machine in bowling works than the game of bowling itself lol

Well. Maintenance is so long because it originates from the Old French word maintenir, which lead to “maintain”. Maintenir is actually a combination of 2 latin words, manu tenere, which means “to hold in one’s hand”.

So when you add in the suffix “-ance”, which is added to a verb to create a noun that indicates a process, you get the long arsed 11-letter word, “maintenance”.

Hope that helped.

Let’s be fair, I’m all about telling people to go touch grass, and I’m very much on the record having no issue with extra maintenance especially given the extra content and responsiveness balance wise…

But the OP is simply passionately curious about what’s going on behind the scenes to cause the recent deviations, which I think is fair. I don’t think it would hurt for a community post by Blizzard just to give a state of the union of where everything stands and what issues still exist. I think it helps keep them accountable and eliminates some of the forum bloat of the Karens that think they are losing 50 cents a week.

Bah, that’s not a fair assessment. …its downtime and the forums will be full of heat seeking missiles. That and there isn’t a good answer to the question, so why not enjoy the breadth of responses. It’s a veritable waterfall of IT glory.

It would be kinda cool to see what they do during maintenance, like give us a walkthrough video of what the maintenance guys do.

I’m right there with you. While I have a hard time understanding how programming works, I am a person who likes to know how things work. So if someone comes in and gives an explanation that everyone can understand, it would be super cool. :grinning:

Well… yes, in fairness the OP did say s/he is getting into IT, and one thing he should get used to very quickly is being dumped on by co-workers with snark and sarcasm for asking questions/making-suggestions.

Think about how many realms there are, and how likely each is it’s own server. The code has to be pushed to all and there are OS upgrades, network upgrades, restarts, etc that might be needed in some cases. I am just guessing but working in the IT world it would be something like that.

I don’t envy desktop or server support staff… at all.

Because Bobby knows it bothers you.

1 todays is a normal maintenance time period
2 things needed to be fixed

game is up…for now…lol

If they did it wouldn’t change anything. People would attack them for anything they do.

“Day in the life of a WoW dev” ay? That’d be cool.

More and more I think they’re dockers running on some old Dell 420’s in the corner of an Omaha gas station bathroom.

Video pans over to the forums devs and the office is on fire, the coffee machine is empty and they’re all huddled in a corner crying.

Already done my internship and got plenty of that rofl

LELS.

I thought about applying for some of their entry positions but like, they’re in california and I’m not… and that’d be a long way to travel and a very expensive place to live for a potentially volatile job. :frowning:

Not everyone live here like you.

Well probably VMs yeah haha
