Why is leveling not remotely dangerous?

I have been complaining about this for years, but the Blizzard defense team here just loves to poo poo all over any ideas to reform the leveling in the game.

Retail leveling is boring, and it doesn’t teach you anything about how the endgame works one bit. Most new players just hit endgame and proceed to be hit with a wall of difficulty.

Retail is in desperate need of a revamp to the content that isn’t 8 dungeons and a raid.

ESO is dying off because their overworld content is a joke, basically has the same issues as WoW.

These developers are stuck in the past big time with this slop content.

Some people claim they were 8 years old when WoW came out and it was their first video game; I could understand some character deaths in that situation.

For people who came to WoW from other MMORPG’s at the time, though, WoW was EASY. That was part of what made it attractive.

It was SOLOABLE TO LEVEL CAP. Not “easy” in comparison to retail leveling.

Other MMOs flat out required a group to get anywhere in the world. WoW had areas that did as well but just leveling was soloable. That’s why people came.

Is there anything outside of a world boss (again even that would be at level cap) that actually requires a group now? Probably some classes that could solo that even.

Believe it or not players in the past drove leveling to be such a trivial thing it is today.

Anyone that says otherwise is just trolling.

So play classic if you haven’t already the game started with that experience- over time people began whining it’s so slow it takes so long leveling is stupid etc etc . Then over time blizz started experimenting with new ideas one was soon they removed zone level ranges , then they did scaling so everything just meets your level but at first blush you’d be like well that’s great if it meets my level a more fair challenge.

Nope they tweaked mobs way down in power as well. Around then was when multi player mobs died as well. Like go to classic fight hogger solo at level 10. Significantly harder than in retail where you can slap him and he dies.

So yeah players kinda asked for it. But years ago.

Leveling for new players should take you through the core story of each expansion. The CORE story. Take out all the crap like the goblins in Hellfire Peninsula trying to make an omelette.

New players just paid for 20 years worth of content and story, and then the leveling experience promptly steals it from them.

Oh and for god’s sake get rid of leveling dungeons for new players. Being exposed to pug life before they even get their feet wet is the last thing they need.

Specifically the people with 50 alts, serial leveling character after character and complaining it was boring.

Now there is probably some truth to that but it was equally driven by people that consider everything between them and the final boss of the mythic raid a boring chore as well.

Yeah, I agree with you 100%.

The leveling process is an issue because it was made into an issue. Blizzard kept patching the old leveling model until it broke.

The only thing heirlooms do now is scale the attributes with your level. No XP buff.

Never understood why Blizzard never introduced an option for a hardcore style leveling (doesnt have to be permanent death but that could be an voluntary option).

Unlocked at reaching max level and completing certain other objectives.

Make it more challenging, longer but provide some unique rewards and achievements. Long storylines etc.

Maybe there is an option for something like that in the game and I havent seen it.

This is exactly right. It’s just numbers, and a ratio of 500:450 is the same as a ratio of 50:45. If you find yourself at 500:45 just divide your gear level by 10 and you have the ratio you want.

With transmog if you can make lower level gear look just like your regular gear. Granted if you want the lowest level gear that wouldn’t work but you still wouldn’t be in your underwear. By the way, they don’t allow naked, for that you have to go to Second Life.

Leveling was fun maybe the first 10 times but after that it’s a slog. Even killing things fast it’s still a slog I’d rather just be done with. Making mobs “more dangerous” will only lengthen the slog.

So in short leveling needs to be faster.

Because a lot of people prefer the endgame and leveling is just a necessary evil to reach that point. That’s fine if you don’t. But just like when you try to talk down to M+ from some position of MMORPG authority, you’re suggesting those players should willingly compromise their own enjoyment so other people can potentially have a better experience. And when this is brought to your attention, your response is ad hominem and projection.

To be fair though, with leveling how it was before, getting an alt to max level was getting to be quite a lengthy endeavor, getting longer with each passing expansion. Since a lot of people enjoy being able to experience the game on multiple characters, it was becoming fairly unwieldy for anyone who didn’t keep a stable of max level characters each expansion.

How is leveling in retail WoW a tutorial?

Just take your character’s gear off and see how far you can get without having anything equipped.

And so, you want to make it a longer grind?

Depends on your gear. Playing TWW as a rogue st launch with sub 360 ilvl was brutal

Hogger classic wasnt hard per say. He was just a stat stick. He didnt do anything special nor any of the elite mobs back then. Just a bunch of stat sticks vs your stat stick. Whoever was higher won. That doesnt make good content if anything i rather hogger die quickly then waste time. Pushing the same 1 button abd auto attacking until it died

I don’t think it was ever that hard it was just easier to get overwhelmed by mobs. If you pull a ton of stuff in retail you can still die, just not likely from 1 mob.

This was changed a long time ago. New-game/younger gamers do not want challenges. They want faster or instant gratification. Long gone are the days of quests feeling like quests or any sort of challenge being part of leveling. It’s now just a breezefest to get you to endgame so you can buy runs from their company’s burner accounts enjoy all the fun activities thereafter.
