Because leveling is a chore. And people don’t enjoy chores.
Because we asked for it to be like this.
Because after Vanilla, the game is a continuation of the story/your character.
This is like saying “why dont i wake up a newborn every time”

Simple answer, the more spread out the player population is among levels, the harder it is for them to do stuff together. It might be okay now since all the servers are basically combined and we have the dungeon finder, but before that was the case trying to do stuff with just other people on your server when leveling took a lot longer made it harder to find people to do stuff with.
I think if it more as a mage tower type comp? That could either be solo or in groups. There are different weight classes in boxing. It would kind of the same concept.
Also wow has to keep cranking out new content to keep these ever-increasing levels going. It’s a strain on their design team. I guess it’s a similar idea to pvp but with a unique reward.
I like to create various alts and don’t like burning through content so fast. But I wasn’t around for several expansions. I think the Panda Remix was sort of this idea.
This is true for the early/low levels. It is not true for all levels. They did it pretty well in vanilla. I guess that’s the difference having actual game developers and care makes. ::shrugs:: Early levels were nice and easy, letting you get your footing while not rendering everything outside the tippy top of endgame trivially boring.
But you can have fun stuff in the leveling content. BRD was actually not max-level content in 'nilla, but it was still the best dungeon they’ve ever designed. ZF, Sunken Temple, Maraudon. All very memorable instances well below the level cap.
Frankly I find spamming trivial instances for 12 hours much more “boring and tedious”. Just because it’s slow doesn’t mean it’s boring, and just because it’s fast doesn’t mean it’s not tedious.
I think there’s a middle ground between leveling being tedious and leveling being facile.
Leveling was never really hard, especially when you know what you’re doing. Leveling in Classic is not difficult because enemies need to be interrupted or you need to dodge out of AoE. You just don’t have a lot of tools to deal with things. Leveling did not teach people what they needed to know in dungeons and raids in Classic (not that they needed to know very much at all). Classes with more tools, and especially those that get more tools as they level up, have an easier time leveling. People’s general level of gaming skill has gone up a lot since the 2000s.
I think that leveling in WoW could stand to be more dangerous, with more spells that require interrupts or else they do a lot of damage, and more area of effects that if you stand in it, you take a lot of damage. Things that can easily be negated by using mechanics in a meaningful way rather than things just being stat checks.
But as someone else said above, that open world content exists on a gradient of content. World content is not opt-in, everyone has to do it. So it stands to reason that everyone should be able to do it. Not everyone looks for a challenge in WoW.
There’s much ado about the game starting at end-game, but I have to ask, when the content is as varied as WoW’s is, what’s the problem with that? There’s a lot of stuff to do at endgame, and you get that same feeling of growth at endgame as you get better gear and get a better handle on your class.
OP isnt wrong. Maybe leveling wouldnt be so tedious if people actually had to actively engage their brains while killing monsters.
There are not a lot of new players. It’s mostly alts and we all got sick of leveling years ago.
Open world content is easy in general. It’s just the way it is.
Maybe there would be more new players if leveling was a fun and engaging experience the first few rimes around.
I see a lot of new players (marked via a murloc if you’re in the mentorship program) in Dornogal and the older captital cities. You’d be surprised.
I’m not so sure about that. I think the experience is pretty good for a new player. Especially these days.
People could always play classic if they want that experience. I get that the OP is talking about retail.
But hey, I respect your opinion
I like leveling… i choose not to load up on hierlooms and bennies until later and, unlike for you (most people?) it is a challenge. To each their own, but the current incarnation suits me well.
Whoa… I had no idea this was a thing. I’m about to look into it. How the heck did I not know about this…
The XP is a bit arbitrary. You can play the content you would do while leveling when you are level 80. You have the content you want to play available to you, and the people who do not like that content do not need to play it for 60 hours more than they want. They have also opened many, many servers with lower XP rates to play. You have no requirement to play the servers with better XP rates.
This is a solid thread. I had no idea this existed as well. Must have happened while I was taking a break.
Maybe above 45 it got hard but I doubt it. Leveled to mid-40s as a warrior, there wasn’t difficulty, it was just a lot of tedium.
None of these are remotely close to the best dungeon.
In the bnet launcher under WoW, there is a drop down box to select which era of WoW you want to play. We currently have available modern, vanilla in several variations, and cataclysm. I would recommend anniversary server tab in vanilla client.
I thought you were talking about lower XP rates on retail.
