Why did players & developers decide that the game needs to begin at max level?
1-80 or whatever is a total joke, there’s 0 difficulty in it and that’s especially prevalent at the starting levels. At level 10 you’re basically one-shotting enemies, there’s not even enough time to get off a couple abilities. The scaling is completely busted. You’re given abilities like interrupts, defensives, etc. at lower levels but outside of spamming dungeons, these are useless in the actual world.
Why did you guys butcher my favorite game this hard? Did you really want a queue simulator that much?

Leveling has to accommodate the lowest common denominator, aka new players with a lack of any game skill or knowledge.
Because that’s when the fun stuff like m+ and raids happen, as well as the real gear chase.
Just go play Classic, the leveling is as boring and tedious as you desire.

The only reason leveling is still in the game is to sell boosts
If that wasn’t the case they would put at least a shred of effort into making it a half decent experience

“Leveling has to accomodate new players”
Except new players are not learning anything or getting better by 1-shotting enemies and not even being able to practice their rotation. Can you not grasp basic logic?
“Because the fun stuff is at max level”
Okay, you decided the game should start at max level. Why? What’s wrong with the game starting at level 1?
“Muh boring/tedious”
This is not an argument, you do realize this? Saying something is tedious is just saying you don’t like it.
Terrible first reply. My expectations for the remainder of the thread are lowered.

Leveling always sucked it was the boring chore you did to get to the part of the game you actually wanted to play the faster it is the better

All this tells me is that retail players are all about the destination and don’t care about the journey. Do you also buy boosting services at max level? You might as well.

Just go play your classic where the journey takes longer and the destination is 1 button rotations into raid bosses with 3 mechanics

They decided this during TBC.
This is how MMOs work.
There is still a journey at max level.

You don’t one shot mobs the entire leveling process, just the beginning. It’s meant to be easy for a reason.
Insults are a good way to get a forum vacation btw.
The game does start at level 1, but most people are max level and all the new content is at max level, so the players and Blizzard want you to get there fast.
Saying they butchered the game is just saying you don’t like it, not that they actually “butchered” it.

While this statement is not false, it begs the question… how many new players are there now-a-days?
No, this is not how MMOs work. You guys reek of clearly not playing games aside from retail WoW. Plenty of MMOs today that offer an actual worthwhile leveling experience.

I see a surprisingly large amount, as can anyone in the mentorship program.
All of those MMOs also have a lot less players than WoW so maybe they’re doing something wrong

Hot take:
Leveling needs to be removed and just let iLvl completely take over.

Yes it is.
Every MMO focuses on end game after the initial release.
I have most likely been playing MMORPGs for a longer duration than you have.
EverQuest did this. WoW did this in TBC. Every MMO shifts to focusing on end game.
I’ve made plenty of arguments in the thread already, none of which you’ve actually contradicted, just repeatedly stated what you like and don’t like.
Just human male paladin things, I guess.
What exactly do you think you’re doing here?

I know that what we see is all anecdotal. I know you don’t know the actual numbers, but it’s just something curious I sometimes wonder. I’ve seen people say that there are nowhere near as many as some claim, but I also hear some people make it sound like there are tons. Be interesting to know.
But still, you’re not wrong. It’s the way it is because they’re catering to the lowest denominator. We live in the era where people want quicker or instant gratification, so naturally, games like this follow suit.
You have no idea what you are talking about, lol.
Ashes of Creation, an MMO in development right now, focuses on having a strong leveling experience and doesn’t relegate the real experience at endgame, like you want it to.
OSRS, the more popular version of Runescape, also starts right at the beginning at level 1.
Guild Wars 2 still has a substantial leveling experience and does not funnel you into the endgame in a few hours, same with ESO. FFXIV also has a story campaign that takes 100+ hours to complete before you reach stuff like Savage Raids.
You’re just completely clueless.
