Well they wouldn’t “pay out” anything, they’d just reduce the sub price.
Who’s to say the sub price isn’t already reduced? Who’s to say the actually price of a sub isn’t $15.45, and since the beginning they have graciously reduced it to just $15 to compensate you that 45 cents for maintenance.
I actually think that’s a great idea. Perhaps put an expiration date on the purchase of time, like “use it or lose it”. In general, it would probably mitigate some of the issues related to time loss. Neat!
WoW is a very large and very old system. It was designed for computer environments that existed a quarter century ago and has been heavily modified since.
Unlike other Microsoft products, not only does the development team have to keep the system updated, they have to add new content as well. With most large software products, like operating systems, database systems, network systems and so forth, it’s the customers who add the content. The developers just keep the system up to date.
So it’s not easy and considering how large and complex things are, they are actually doing rather well.
No one here is in a place where they can speak on competence, because no one here knows what Blizzard is doing in these maintenance windows. All we can do is speculate.
