Because its an rpg. This whole game is grinding. Rep, trait, pathfinder, mounts, pets, gear, pvp points, dungeons, raids, craft mats, profession level, quests. Literally everything in this game is a grind. I dont see the problem with blizzard adding in some grinding that gives actually useful rewards.
Man, I remember when this game was something I’d play for hours at a time because I wanted to, not because I had a list of chores to complete each day.
THEY need you logged in, paying and playing so they can show the people who sign their paychecks that they have an active audience. For a MMORPG an active audience is a draw for new players which implies that there is growth in the game which will lead to a growth in profits in the future.
It’s all smoke and mirrors to convince the money people ( who understand data and spreadsheets) to give some money to the game making people.
Yep, essences worked as a way of fix some of the problems of the Azerite Gear and Class design of BFA, but i really hate that i need to farm things just to be able to play my class so then i can farm other things i actually want.
They set goals throughout the game that keep you playing. For some without goals the game would be just that. Now, I’m not advocating for pathfinder or some of the other crap they have going on within the system because I still log on and play for hours doing whatever I please.
I have not unlocked pathfinder on my main which is driving me nuts. But, as a casual player that returned earlier in the BFA expansion after stopping prior to Mists it was all new to me. But, as I said before I play how I want to play. Sometimes I work on game implimented goals or I work on goals that I want to achieve.
At the end of the day weather or not I accomplish the goals I wanted to do I still have fun and enjoy my play session (Unless I get wife aggro).
Me: “This is my subjective perception of the past and current state of Wow.”
Rando: “YoU LiAr!”
Never change, Internet. Never change.
For most of WoW’s history I played it because I wanted to. There were activities that gave me rewards, but doing those activities didn’t feel like a chore because the activities themselves were enjoyable.
Now, we have a list of chores - things to do before actually getting to the fun part of the game if there’s time left over.
Because if there were no grinds and no timegates, players would consume the content extremely quickly, get burnt out, and start unsubbing at rates far earlier than Blizz can create more content.
Blizz can’t trust people to just play the game, they’ll lose a ton of money that way.
