Why does no one want to tank?

There’s clearly something fundamentally wrong with tanking in WoW. Even Brann won’t play tank.

I don’t take on the tank role in M+ because I think it’s the most difficult role.

I do almost no group pve, but I will never forget an LFR in Shadowlands where one of the tanks messed up a mechanic and caused a wipe, and annoyed players vote kicked him even though he apologized for his mistake.

That’s why I would never, ever tank for this playerbase. It’s easy to forget the good majority of experiences in the face of one event like that.

The community is terrible and hardest on tanks and healers. A lot just do stuff with their guilds and avoid pugging. There isn’t a tank or healer shortage in general, just some with randoms cuz randoms can’t be trusted to not be dunderheads.

I always tank…. With my friends and guildies. Done with the toxic m+ groups

I don’t pug tank. I don’t need 20 year old Jimmy Warcraft screaming at me during a dungeon.

There are a few reasons for me why I hardly tank these days outside of playing with my friends.

  • Difficulty of the content. As a tank you need to know the fights, I feel like you don’t really get to learn like a DPS or healer can by just jumping into things. People expect you to already know the dungeon, routes, and all of that. I’ve not really had issues with people complaining about me but I judge myself harshly. The content itself in WoW has also become more and more punishing and difficult over time and I just don’t want that anymore. I had fun with M+ and AOTC raiding in BFA and feel like it’s less fun now.

  • The timer with M+ is also an issue. It’s not that it’s hard to time things, it’s that it changes the mindset of the playerbase and makes people more judgemental and less forgiving. I don’t see the issue with removing the timer and letting the game become a little more casual in ways like this so people can chill out and relax more.

  • This ties into the difficulty comment but some of the dungeons are just designed in ways that make them no fun to play for me in a M+ setting. There are a couple of them in this expansion sadly and we often see the dungeons I hated in past expansions now that they have been added to the rotation. I honestly prefer just the current expansion dungeons with M+ and was disappointed when they changed things in DF as there are so many older dungeons that have been added I was glad we were done with in the past. It’s just more to learn if you want to play each season.

  • The big reason really comes down to time though. I have not had as much time to play WoW as I would like to learn all the content to a point where I’m comfortable tanking. I’m also mainly doing Delves and PvP when I do play and that’s kept me busy and out of the normal group content.

The experience at lower levels is pretty terrible and people have pretty high expectation leading to less people willing to give it a try when tank is a role that is built upon experience and building confidence.

Add to that that a lot of players simply want to do big numbers and tanks aren’t allowed to do that much anymore, funnily when tanks do more damage way more people play them.

Oh, that’s easy

The average pug dps doesn’t stop or avoid anything, then also flames you for not doing a good enough job of playing around them doing so

Tank/healer in pugs is just boosting dps players for free

If there were an incentive for tanks and healers to do M+ pugs then you’d have more tanks. Until then I’ll just stick with my guild when they wanna run them

Because a lot of people don’t treat tanks like humans, so they tank for friends/guild members instead.

The incentive is instant groups which honestly isn’t enough but they aren’t gonna add anything else so

Yeah, and that’s why they’re a lone dps pugging

Because I can’t play a tank in anything other than group content.

So I am forced to maintain a dps spec anyway…and then I just end up sticking to it because it already has gear.

Except you can play tank in everything except rated 2s/3s

Oh, I know. But as a tank you get instant groups anyways. I’m just saying I’d do way more group finder if there was something extra waiting for me at the end.

I would tank if I had friends, but that’s about it. A great deal of players tend to be ruthless to people who make even the slightest error or go the way they think isn’t the way they want/think they can handle (thanks MDIs).

I always mess up the mob count, that’s pretty much why I stopped tanking M+.

You need to know the fights, the routes, the pulls, the cadence, the skips, the lust timers… And on top of it, you’re expected to babysit the others and fill in the gaps of ignorance they came into the dungeon with.

Absolutely. Bingo. This is the biggest reason. /thread it right here.
You’re the leader and the one who is “supposed” to know. A clueless healer will get the group wiped once or twice. A clueless DPS will get themselves killed. A clueless tank will make the entire key undoable. The other two roles have the luxury of going in blind, tanks don’t. The group falls apart quickly with a clueless tank. And that, ultimately, is why people shy away from this role. You bear the most responsibility when it comes to knowing what’s up.

Yea I know

But it feels really bad in solo play. So I’m heavily pushed into maintaining a windwalker spec even tho I really want to be a brewmaster.
