I don’t get it. Back during Wrath we’d use Ventrilo to voice chat during raids and that was it. Everything else including raid sign up was done in-game. I don’t like Discord, too much unnecessary crap on that bloated app. Seems like every guild makes it a requirement to sign up for raids and events on disc. Why is that?

That’s great and all, but is it really necessary? What “features” other than voice chat do you really need? I think it has to do more with streamer culture than anything else…

It makes everything significantly easier to organize. Sign ups, communication, community, etc all in one place.

So you want your GM and officers to organize and centralize everything on an excel spreadsheet?
You want them to talk to each individual raider, see if they are available on said date, write their name class and spec down?
Or alternatively, you can just click on a sign up sheet on discord that will do it automatically?

It’s just what people use. I actually used in-game voice for a PuG a few months ago. That was pretty decent and I think that if WoW were a more modern game, you’d probably have it on by default for instanced content, with the option to mute and/or adjust other peoples’ volume levels on an individual basis.
Discord is just the popular thing now.

Windows is like 90% bloated crap. With modern computers bloated crap is kind of irrelevant.
Maybe if they decided to use the old WoW client that was able to be run on a potato computer, but instead they made it a port of the retail client.

both of my guilds use the crap out of discord for a variety of things outside voice chat. it serves as a forum, a crafting hub, raid schedules and sign ups, and just a general social hub. class tools, information feeds, its so much more than voice chat.

Because discord is a more user friendly system. The organization of text and chat channels is easier, with greater control for the host of the server and those he allows power to. It’s easier to organize the raid, and even distribute loot for some loot systems.
It is everything you described, but consolidated and better. Time moves on. No one is going to use worse and inferior systems for the sake of nostalgia.

also i love discord honestly it is a little bloated but its far better then vent and team speak ever was back in the day. it does help organize and keeps things so much more efficient.

I do miss using the in-game calendar for raid sign-ups. I don’t find discord necessary or superior for this purpose whatsoever.

Have you tried using Blizz’s “in game” voice chats? it sounds like 
. Xbox 360 mics from 2007 sound better than what they use. Even Discord’s basic voice quality is miles better than blizz’s.
There is literally nothing bloated about discord. It also allows people to sign up, chat, etc with people while not in the game. People play other stuff, go to work, watch movies… Discord allows for an actual community to be built that doesn’t require someone to be logged in 24/7

You forgot the hardest part of them all… socializing and having actual friends in the game to do content with!!
I know, i know… its bold of me to assume that the regular player will go through such troubles and tribulations.
But if I make friends I may have to maintain those friendships and then what do I do when some one helps me and then they expect me to help them back? I just want all my stuff so I can quit and show up when new content is out expecting my raid spot to still be there.
Because being spied on is trendy nowadays.
